Refers to a proposal placed before Mr. [James] Bowdoin, noting that Jackson did everything in his power not to leave the papers with Bowdoin. Promises to put the proposal before [John] Pitts when he returns to town, but adds that Knox has little hope of success unless he agrees to furnish each creditor with a copy of the proposal. Notes, for my own part I dislike leaving with [the] papers. Notes that General Webb and Doctor Andrew [Craigie] are both at Boston, and are engaged in financial speculation. Gives the details of the wedding of Lucy's friend Charlotte.

Encloses a newspaper from 12 December (not included). Relates that he previously sent Knox fish with directions for [casking] it, but forgot to tell him. Thinks Lucy Knox and Catharine Greene probably had a good laugh because of his absentmindedness. Asks Knox to refer his daughter, Lucy, to an article written by Celadon in the newspapers he encloses.

Encourages Knox to attend the court in June, writing, your being on the spot to confront those rascals will have more weight in the public mind, than a whole host of the other proprietors... attend to it yourself, if you ever expect to derive any benefit from the patent- or give it up & let it go to the devil- Notes that Thursday's paper contains several proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution. The amendments originated with [Nathan] Dane, [John] Bacon, and [Benjamin] Austin. Jackson declares, they are the heads of the Junto that are endeavoring to distroy & weaken the General Government.

Reports that the General Court of Massachusetts (the Massachusetts legislature) will remain adjourned until September 1788 at which time, he hopes, they will be able to give orders to the people to choose the members for the General Government. Obtained a resolve from the General Court that he hopes will make up for the loss I have sustained by pledging myself for the clothing & supplies to the late Federal troops- Docket indicates answered the 29th and assured him the note 1045 was not ever received at Nourses office. Marked private on the address leaf.

As Mr. Swan is away, Mrs. Swan acknowledges receipt and sends her love to Mrs. Lucy Knox. Ends the letter affectionately: My best regards to Lucy & your dear little family. I miss you very much. I want you here my dear Harry I want a friend that I can rely on, not a dog to love me. I hope it will be so orderd, that some time or other we shall meet again & live near each other untill the great Trump shall blow & then I am certain we never shall separate.

VP this will being very pleasing to him & perfectly gratifying to all the people in this quarter. Discusses celebrations surrounding Adams's election. Mentions the activities of their friends, and declares that Governor [John] Hancock is still unwell. Adds that the Supreme Court continues to sit, which is preventing Hichborn from leaving town with Jackson to visit Knox in New York. Does not think that he will be able to be with Knox when General [George] Washington arrives in New York, as he had hoped. He and their friends send their love to Knox and his wife. Docketed by Knox.

Further, the government would not allow monopoly of this article to any one family. Lime is not selling well and the Winslows have a great store of it. Discusses other business, including sale of Knox's hardware, which is in Jackson's possession; John Brooks' receipt of permission to leave confinement to settle his debts; New York's daring new financial policy; and the start of new representation in the coming weeks, which may cause difficulty to their friend [Benjamin] Hichborn, among others. Sends love to Lucy Knox along with the rest of their Boston friends.
