Book The Making of Pioneer Wisconsin

Download or read book The Making of Pioneer Wisconsin written by Michael E. Stevens and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-1830s through the 1850s, more than a half million people settled in Wisconsin. While traveling in ships and wagons, establishing homes, and forming new communities, these men, women, and children recorded their experiences in letters, diaries, and newspaper articles. In their own words, they revealed their fears, joys, frustrations, and hopes for life in this new place. The Making of Pioneer Wisconsin provides a unique and intimate glimpse into the lives of these early settlers, as they describe what it felt like to be a teenager in a wagon heading west or an isolated young wife living far from her friends and family. Woven together with context provided by historian Michael E. Stevens, these first-person accounts form a fascinating narrative that deepens our ability to understand and empathize with Wisconsin’s early pioneers.

This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the life and family of Henry Hewitt (1814-1897) who was born in Paythorne, Yorkshire, England, and emigrated to Wisconsin in the United States of America in 1842. Hewitt settled in Menasha, Wisconsin, after beginning his career as a construction manager building locks, dams, and canals along the Fox River from Kaukauna to Menasha. He also built plank roads and the Manitowoc-Mississippi Railroad. He was an investor in the Fox and Wisconsin River Improvement Company. Hewitt acquired large tracts of land and timber and established or invested in a wide variety of businesses and manufacturing concerns including three banks in Neenah, Menasha, and Kaukauna. Stories are included about several other pioneer personalities from the Fox Cities who were assisted in some way by Hewitt. Some members of the Hewitt family moved from Wisconsin to the Pacific Northwest and settled in the Everett and Tacoma, Washington area.

Download or read book Provincial Lives written by Timothy R. Mahoney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provincial Lives tells the story of the development of a regional middle class in the antebellum Middle West. It traces the efforts of waves of Americans to transmit their social structures, behavior, and values to the West and construct a distinctive regional middle-class culture on the urban frontier. Intertwining local, regional, and national history with social, immigration, gender and urban history, Mahoney examines how a succession of settlers from "good" society--farmers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and "genteel" men and women from the urban East--interacted with, accommodated, and compromised with those already there to construct a middle-class society.
