Book The Syntax of Ditransitives

Download or read book The Syntax of Ditransitives written by Elena Anagnostopoulou and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2003 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates the nature and properties of indirect objects and develops a typology of double object constructions on the basis of an examination of a variety of data within and across languages. It argues for a four-class division of double object constructions depending on (a) a type of case on the goal argument and (b) whether the goal is introduced by a zero applicative head or is an argument of the main verb. The central questions addressed revolve around locality, case and the structural representation of double object constructions.

Book Clitic and Affix Combinations

Download or read book Clitic and Affix Combinations written by Lorie Heggie and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-03-18 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the relationship between clitics and affixes and their combinatorial properties has led to a serious discussion of the interface between syntax, morphology, semantics, and phonology that draws on a variety of theoretical perspectives (e.g., HPSG , Optimality Theory, Minimalism). Clitic/affix phenomena provide a rich range of data, not only for the identification of an affix vs. clitic, but also for the best way to explain ordering constraints, some of which are contradictory. A range of languages are considered, including Romance and Slavic languages, as well as Turkish, Greek, Icelandic, Korean, and Passamaquoddy. Moreover, several articles consider dialectal microparameterization, notably in Spanish, French, and Occitan. This volume thus reflects current debate on issues such as clitic ordering constraints, the relationship of clitics to inalienable possession and the left periphery, and templatic approaches to affixes vs. clitics while examining a broad range of languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crosier on the Frontier, which was first published in 1959, is a fascinating biography on John Martin Henni (1805-1881), the Swiss-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the first Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1843 until his death in 1881. “FOR THE MORE than fifty years John Martin Henni labored as a priest in Ohio and as a bishop and archbishop in Wisconsin, he was inspired by a vision and guided by a practical foresight not given to many men of his or any other generation. Perhaps no one of his time exerted more consistent influence for good over so many people with such lasting results. Like another St. Paul, he was tireless in his journeys, fearless in his defense of the truth, and a bulwark against which the error and bigotry of his day could not prevail. It is time that his life is presented to our generation and to generations yet to come. His is too noble a figure to be lost in the haze of half remembered, easily forgotten fragments of unrecorded lore.”—William E. Cousins, Foreword

"Tell me again, Grandmère, the story of how I die." The Midnight Forest. The Fanged Creature. Two fortune-telling cards that spell an untimely death for 17-year-old Clara. Despite the ever-present warning from her fortune-teller grandmother, Clara embarks on a dangerous journey into the deadly Forest Grimm to procure a magical book—Sortes Fortunae, the Book of Fortunes—with the power to reverse the curse on her village and save her mother. Years ago, when the villagers whispered their deepest desires to the book, its pages revealed how to obtain them. All was well until someone used the book for an evil purpose—to kill another person. Afterward, the branches of the Forest Grimm snatched the book away, the well water in Grimm’s Hollow turned rancid, and the crops died from disease. The villagers tried to make amends with the forest, but every time someone crossed its border, they never returned. Now, left with no alternative, Clara and her close friend, Axel—who is fated never to be with her—have set their minds to defying fate and daring to accomplish what no one else has been able to before. But the forest—alive with dark, deadly twists on some of our most well-known fairy tales—has a mind of its own.
