The descendants of Hendrick and Friedrich Pannebecker to the present time certainly exceed three thousand in number, since a record (far from complete) has been made of over twentyfive hundred. In this large throng, eight have been clergymen, one of whom, MatthiasPennypacker, becameabishop among the Mennonites in the last century. Fifteen have been physicians, including Benjamin Pennebaker, resident physician at the Philadelphia House of Correction; Jacob Pennypacker, president of the Medical Society of Chester County; E. Z. Derr, surgeon in the United States Navy; Isaac A. Pennypacker, Professor of Theory and Practice in the Philadelphia College of Medicine, and James Tyson, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, and the learned author of many standard works upon medicine. Twenty-eight have been lawyers, and of these three were district attorneys and seven were judges, including Green B. Samuels, justice of the Virginia Court of Appeals. The Word in the Wilderness takes a different view, probing these documents for what they tell us about the lived religious experiences of the Protestant communities that made and used them and opening avenues for reinterpretation of this well-known, if little understood, set of cultural artifacts. The resplendent illuminated religious manuscripts commonly known as Fraktur have captivated collectors and scholars for generations. Yet fundamental questions about their cultural origins, purpose, and historical significance remain. Alexander Lawrence Ames addresses these by placing Fraktur manuscripts within a “Pietist paradigm,” grounded in an understanding of how their makers viewed “the Word,” or scripture.
