  • Pages : 456 pages

Download or read book Human Hemoglobins written by Howard Franklin Bunn and published by W.B. Saunders Company. This book was released on 1977 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of the era of molecular biology, hemoglobin has been subjected to more scrutiny than any other protein, and Bunn, Forget, and Ranney can each lay claim to major contributions to the saga of hemoglobin. Their well-organized, comprehensive, and superbly illustrated work is an excellent review of the abnormal hemoglobin field. Early chapters deal with the structure and function of human hemoglobin and the way in which this is modified in various disease states. Later sections deal with the various structural hemoglobin variants and their associated clinical manifestations, the thalassaemias, and the acquired disorders of hemoglobin. The sections that deal with the modification of hemoglobin function in various disease states are particularly good. The book contains an extensive and up-to-date bibliography and is remarkably free from errors of fact or type--the best standard of reference on the subject as of the year 1977.

Book Iron Chelation Therapy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chaim Hershko
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461505933
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book Iron Chelation Therapy written by Chaim Hershko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last few years, iron research has yielded exciting new insights into the under standing of normal iron homeostasis. However, normal iron physiology offers little protec tion from the toxic effects of pathological iron accumulation, because nature did not equip us with effective mechanisms of iron excretion. Excess iron may be effectively removed by phlebotomy in hereditary hemochromatosis, but this method cannot be applied to chronic anemias associated with iron overload. In these diseases, iron chelating therapy is the only method available for preventing early death caused mainly by myocardial and hepatic iron toxicity. Iron chelating therapy has changed the quality of life and life expectancy of thalassemic patients. However, the high cost and rigorous requirements of deferoxamine therapy, and the significant toxicity of deferiprone underline the need for the continued development of new and improved orally effective iron chelators. Such development, and the evolution of improved strategies of iron chelating therapy require better understanding of the pathophysiology of iron toxicity and the mechanism of action of iron chelating drugs. The timeliness of the present volume is underlined by several significant develop ments in recent years. New insights have been gained into the molecular basis of aberrant iron handling in hereditary disorders and the pathophysiology of iron overload (Chapters 1-5).

Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Book Cell and Molecular Biology of Artemia Development

Download or read book Cell and Molecular Biology of Artemia Development written by A. Warner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brine shrimp Artemia has become an important experimental system for studies of the developmental process. In recent years the shrimp has yielded considerable information on the pattern of development, bio chemistry, and gene structure and expression of crustaceans. This book is a compilation of research activity from twenty five of the most active re search laboratories working with brine shrimp in the above areas. It also represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Montreal, Canada, August 11-13, 1988. The book contains twenty nine full papers covering the major areas discussed at the workshop. In addition, one page abstracts representing seventeen poster presentations which were given at the workshop, and which were deemed to be most relevant to the theme of the book, are included. These are designated with an [al in the Table of Contents following the title of each paper. A considerable amount of discussion which took place during the workshop has not been included in the book because of space limitations. However, the editors will endeavour to make some of this in formation available at a later date through the Artemia Newsletter. In addition to the high percentage of invited speakers who attended and contributed to the workshop, the organizers would like to thank a number of participants who made valuable contributions to the major dis cussion sessions. These include: John Freeman, Michael Horst, Herman Slegers, Jack Vaughn, Frank Conte, Sandy McLennan, Clive Trotman and Patrick Sorgeloos.

Published in the last few years, several landmark phase III trials that utilize matched unrelated and haploidentical donors for HSCT in SCD patients are also placed in context with respect to current management. Written by experts in the field, Sickle Cell Disease and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation is a valuable resource for physicians and researchers dealing with and interested in this challenging, yet exciting, curative therapy for sickle cell disease, that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts.

Book Control Mechanisms in Developmental Processes

Download or read book Control Mechanisms in Developmental Processes written by Michael Locke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control Mechanisms in Developmental Processes covers the proceedings of the 1967 26th Symposium of The Society for Developmental Biology, held in La Jolla, California. This book is divided into three parts encompassing 10 chapters that summarize the role of cytoplasmic units and the nucleus in developmental processes and the regulatory mechanisms. The opening part of the book describes the chemical changes during the development of plastids in leaves of higher plants. The book goes on discussing the nuclear and cytoplasmic controls in Neurospora morphology. This compilation also examines the aspects of development, growth, and control in the basal bodies and flagella of Chlamydomonas reinhardii. The second part describes genetic systems in plants that serve to initiate or program the sequence in plant development and the life cycle of hybrids between somatic cells of different species. A chapter discusses the genetic basis of higher plant morphogenesis by analysis of the differences between genotypes that differ from each other with respect to a single gene having a pronounced and highly specific effect upon form. A discussion on the activation of protein synthesis upon fertilization and early development of animal eggs to the biochemical basis of the determination process is also included. The concluding part deals with the differentiation of erythroid cells; the induction of hemoglobin synthesis; the regulation of heme and globin synthesis; and the role of heme in the synthesis and assembly of hemoglobin. This part also describes the differentiation of cells to the point where they can perform the various types of immunological reactions. This book is an invaluable source for developmental biologists and researchers.
