Book New Insights Into Hematologic Malignancies

Download or read book New Insights Into Hematologic Malignancies written by Ted Myers and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The branch of medicine that studies the causes, treatment and prevention of blood-related diseases is known as hematology. Hematologic malignancy is a type of cancer that originates in blood-forming tissues such as the bone marrow or in the cells of the immune system. It is caused by cells dividing at an abnormal rate. The three main types of hematologic malignancies include, leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. A cancer that begins in the lymphatic system is called lymphoma. The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune system and it includes lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland and bone marrow. Lymphoma cancer can affect any part of the lymphatic system. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that originates in the bone marrow. It affects the plasma cells. In multiple myeloma, the plasma cells affected with cancer, start building-up in the bone marrow along with the healthy blood cells. Leukemia is a cancer that starts developing in the bone marrow, or blood-forming tissues, or the lymphatic system. The diagnosis includes various blood tests, such as complete blood count (CBC) test and electrophoresis blood test. This book includes some of the vital pieces of works being conducted across the world on various topics related to diagnosis, treatment and control of hematologic malignancies. Students, researchers, hematologists, and all associated with this subject will benefit alike from it.

Book Diseases of the Lymphatic System

Download or read book Diseases of the Lymphatic System written by D. W. Molander and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a practical approach for clinicians who work with patients afflicted with diseases of the lymphoid system and bone marrow. Associated biochemical, hematological, and chromosomal abnormalities, as well as infectious complications, are covered because of their importance in managing patients with lymphatic diseases. In addition, cell kinetics and the classification of lym phocytic lymphomas are included because familiarity with these subjects leads to a better understanding of the physiology of the disease. Radiological techniques that aid the clinician in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the lymphoid tissue are discussed. The explosive interest in patients with generalized acquired (auto) immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) prompted the inclusion of a chapter exclusively devoted to this topic. Finally, the chapter dealing with psychological aspects of patients with cancer allows the reader to become familiar with useful techniques. Distilled from a vast array of data and representing the most up-to-date material available, this volume is intended to be of interest to internists, oncolo gists, hematologists, radiotherapists, nurses, and anyone in an associated pa ramedical field who may be involved in the care of patients with diseases of the lymphatic system. Book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field

Download or read book Military Strategies for Sustainment of Nutrition and Immune Function in the Field written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.
