Book excerpt: When Lily Jacobs was born, she inherited Fazire – a genie. Her family had three wishes and they’d only ever used one so Fazire was stuck in the human world. This worked since he’d become a member of the family anyway. Even with a genie, Lily's young life wasn’t perfect. To escape the kids making her miserable at school, Lily buried herself in romance novels. One day, when the teasing was just too much, she used one of her wishes. She told Fazire she wanted to find a man like in her books and she made the most complicated wish Fazire had ever heard. Her wished-for man had to be impossibly handsome, virile, fierce, rugged and ruthless (amongst a dozen other things). He also had to think she was beautiful and he had to love her more than anything in the world. Nathaniel McAllister wasn’t born to a life where there were such things as genies granting wishes. His life was filled with drugs, crime and neglect. He was running errands for a gangster before he was in his teens and, even though life and hard work led him to wealth and respectability, he always knew, deep down, he was dirty. When Nate met Lily he knew he was no good for her but as virile, fierce, rugged and ruthless as he was, Nate was no match for the pull of sweet, innocent Lily. Unfortunately, Lily’s wish included that she and her hero go through trials and tribulations to test their love. And Fazire wasn’t only a good genie, he loved Lily – so he gave her exactly what she wanted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uneasy relationship of two glamorous leading ladies living in the spotlight – Stars of Stage and Screen. They are sworn enemies whose lives have been in collision from their first meeting during World War Two as seven-year-old children in blitz ridden Hull until their uneasy reconciliation in their forties. The settings are real and so are some of the events, but all the characters are figments of my imagination which has been nourished by a lifetime in the business known as show. ‘You must get over this antagonism to Jessica. Nobody else has a problem with her. She is one of the most popular ladies in the business.’ ‘Huh, nobody has known her as long as I have.’ ‘That is as maybe. But you are hardly as high in the popularity stakes.’ Maxine shrugged. ‘I’m not in the business to be popular.’ ‘Then that is a problem. You really should be a little more careful. Actors have ways of destroying those who are dismissive of them. They can ruin your performance in ways you will never understand.’ ‘It’s very kind of you Stanley to take such trouble over me but I have never kowtowed to anyone in my life and I’m not about to start now.’ ‘Then you may just find you are out of a job. Amy is learning your part – right now as we speak.’

Book Football in Fiction

Download or read book Football in Fiction written by Lee McGowan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Football in Fiction represents the most comprehensive historical mapping and analysis of novels related to association football (soccer). It offers a theoretically informed field guide, a scholarly cartography of football fiction’s uncertain – and until now – only partially explored terrain. Combining an extensive search for texts with up-to-date academic research, journals, surveys, catalogues, and reviews the book demonstrates a topographic perspective of the field – one that captures and establishes its breadth, depth, and distinctive identity. The book uses and adapts two distinct reading models of abstraction, in conjunction with closer textual analyses. Together they assist in realising a set of demonstrable conventions, outline a taxonomy of fictive types, establish the genre’s current state of play, and advance the football novel as a form with its own literary history and traditions. This book is a valuable resource for those studying and researching in the areas of the social and cultural aspects of football, sports fiction, sports writing, creative writing, and literary and genre studies. Furthermore, related industry professionals will find this a fascinating read, particularly football writers, fans of the sport, and those interested in sports history and cultural phenomena.

Book excerpt: Known to so many, and yet unknowable, was Frank Thring. Actor, bon vivant, professional flamboyant, withering critic. No one else could tell his story, so here it is, as if by his own hand. His boyhood as the son of a doomed movie mogul and a society charity matriarch, both former showies. His times in radio, theatre, Hollywood, TV and print. As immortal Australian iconoclast. At the end of his life, beset by the maladies he knows will soon claim him, Frank tells all. Of moviemaking, branded ‘hatcheries of disasters.’ Of Dennis Hopper, Mick Jagger, Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, Kirk Douglas, Janet Leigh, Julie London, Tony Curtis, Jack Hawkins, James Mason, and Australia’s best. Of sharing the stage with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Of this times with Noel Coward, John Geilgud, Orson Wells, Gore Vidal, Fellini, Edward Woodward, Chips Rafferty, Frankie Howerd. Of his three decades on Australian television, as critic, sidekick, guest and star. Of longer still at the Melbourne Theatre Company. And of the Frank deep beneath the loud, large one he confected. This tale the most intriguing of all.
