Polly expresses the emotions brought forth by writing this book in the following quote, "During this time, I felt as if I was shedding the skin of my past. I felt as if Polly the Parrot was taking flight. I could stay a victim of circumstances or I could change the course of my flight path." The book is a life history starting with her great grand parent's oil exploration in Illinois. Polly continues to tell the story of how with only a sixth grade education her great grandfather became a member of the board of directors of a savings and loan bank. He also owned a coal mine. Polly tells how her grandparents raised eight children and the tragedies they endured. Her grandfather was a part time minister who delivered the St Louis Globe Newspaper to the local small town farmers during the week. Polly's family had many difficulties due to her father's illness which eventually lead to him becoming a drug addict. The family consisted of two children. Polly's tells what a very important roll her grandparents, aunts, and uncles played in her daily life. They were always there for her due to her father's illness when she was very small. The author shares with her readers the secrets of why she did and felt so many things that were based on her past experiences. It all comes out after her visit with a hypnotist. The realities of her past are revealed.

As a wildlife rehabilitator, she knows the squirrel on a profoundly personal level and has hand-reared numerous litters of orphan kits, eventually returning them to the wild. In this book she shares her experiences and love for the squirrel and explores how our perceptions have changed. Heavily persecuted until the 1960s, it has since become one of the nation's most adored mammals. But we are now racing against time to ensure its long-term survival in an ever-changing world. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Polly's Perthshire farm, where she works continuously to encourage wildlife great and small, she highlights how nature can, and indeed will, recover if only we give it a chance. In just two decades, her efforts have brought spectacular results, and numerous squirrels and other animals visit her wild farm every day.

Polly Pierce likes being the second-most popular girl at Winston Academy, right after her BFF, Kelsy. Popularity comes with special privileges, like a seat at the best table in the cafeteria and a coveted spot on the planning committee for the school’s big talent show competition, Groove It Up! And since all Polly has to do is agree with whatever Kelsy says, being popular is easy—even if kids do call her “Plastic Polly” behind her back. But when a freak accident takes Kelsy out of the picture, Polly is suddenly in charge of the Groove It Up! committee. She’s not prepared for her new status—and neither is anyone else. Backstabbing friends, an intimidating crush, and diva demands from an injured Kelsy all threaten to derail Polly’s plans. Can she prove to everyone—and herself—that she has a personality of her own?
