Much of the research is often variable driven and assumes this construct is a global construct. The current study used the Theory of Planned Behavior to provide a theory based approach to understanding psychological help seeking intention. Also, the theory was tested for three common presenting concerns: Anxiety or Depression, Career Choice Concerns, and Alcohol or Substance Use. Two samples of over 400 university students completed surveys for all three concerns. Results produced invariance across path loadings for the concerns being compared. When thinking about seeking psychological help, university students do not appear to consider the type of concern but do rely on attitude, stigma, and how much control and efficacy they have to address their problems on their own. Mean differences emerged for some variables in the model, but no meaningful mean differences were noted for gender. Overall, the variables used in the decision making process do not appear to consider concern when seeking help, but the beliefs about seeking help differ some. These results extend the Theory of Planned Behavior to consider the importance of an individual's ability to address their problem on their own. When considering psychological help seeking, college students have similar attitudes and beliefs about their ability to access mental health resources, their beliefs about stigma, ability to address their problems on their own, and their intention to seek help vary more by concern. The specific concerns being addressed does not appear to impact the weight each variable is given in the decision making process; attitude, stigma, and ability to solve the problem on their own appear to be the variables given greatest consideration.

Many avoid seeking help due to help-negation or the refusal to seek available mental health help when needed. To better understand why suicidal college students refuse to seek help, it is essential to assess factors associated with their intentions and behaviors. According to the Theory of Planned Behavior, the stronger an individual0́9s intentions towards a behavior, the higher their potential to perform the behavior. Thus, this study examined factors associated with informal and formal help-seeking intentions and previous help-seeking behaviors among suicidal college students. Additionally, this study compared factors associated with formal and informal mental health help-seeking intentions and previous behaviors among suicide ideators, planners, and attempters. Methods: A cross-sectional study was completed using the 2018-2020 Healthy Minds Study Dataset. Inclusion criteria consisted of respondents aged 18-24 years old who answered 'yes' to having STB and responded to all demographic variables assessed. Independent Sample t-tests, Chi-square analyses, Binary logistic regressions, and Forward Stepwise logistic regressions were utilized to determine the association between selected factors and formal and informal help-seeking intentions and previous behaviors. Castillo Department of Educational Psychology, Texas A&M University, USA ABSTRACT This study aimed to examine whether Asian international students’ mental health literacy predicts mental health help-seeking behaviors above and beyond known influencing factors. Hierarchical logistic regression was conducted in analyzing a national sample of 460 Asian international students who reported depressive symptomatology. Results indicated that students who identified as female and experienced more days of academic impairment were more likely to seek counseling. Additionally, having more knowledge on mental disorders and treatments and campus mental health services were positively related to helpseeking behavior. However, the ability to recognize the development of mental disorders in others was negatively associated with seeking mental health help. Book excerpt: The sample consisted of 219 college students of African descent, with a greater number of females than males. ANCOVAs and multiple regression analyses were implemented to explore and understand the relationship between study variables. Females were found to have more positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help, and higher intentions to seek psychological help when necessary, compared to males. When considered separately, perceived negative peer norms and perceived negative family norms were found to predict help-seeking intentions, while perceived negative community norms did not. When the three levels of perceived negative norms were considered together, only perceived negative family norms was found to predict help-seeking intentions for psychological concerns. Results also showed that individuals with more positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help had higher intentions to seek professional help for psychological concerns, when necessary. The results of this study have implications for clinical intervention and research of mental health service usage among African American late adolescents and early adults. When trying to understand help-seeking intentions among African Americans, family norms are the most prominent factor to consider.

Book excerpt: The EUROHIS project has focused on the comparability of health surveys and has uncovered some problems that arise when aiming to compare data from different countries. Similar problems of cross-cultural comparability also arise when comparing data from other sources, such as health registers, and are just as complex and difficult to tackle. One of the main advantages of health surveys, however, is the relatively low cost and time involved in adapting them according to the needs of health policy-makers. This work shows that the output from the EUROHIS project provides common instruments for the measurement of eight health indicators. The development of these instruments has required careful consideration of relevant common concepts and how these should be defined and operationalized. The instruments are freely available for use by all countries, with the aim of enhancing national health information systems and facilitating cross-national comparisons of health data.
