Book excerpt: The current study examined the attitudes and intended behavior of college students toward seeking help on campus for various hypothetical psychological and physical concerns. Participants (n = 84) were undergraduate students at a Bethel University, a Midwestern Evangelical Christian university who completed three measures: (a) a scale examining intention to seek help from various sources; (b) the Religious Commitment Inventory (RCI-10); and (c) the Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Help Scale (ATSPHS). Results showed a majority of students prefer to seek help from their friends and family members. Their willingness to seek help from professional sources was lower than anticipated based on previous studies with similar populations while their religious commitment levels were consistent with other religious college student populations. The results suggest students at this university are unlikely to see a need to seek professional help, but when they do, they will choose appropriate resources on campus. These results may help college counseling centers to orient students to resources on campus, which are appropriate for their concerns. The study confirmed previous research suggesting that college students have a preference for seeking help from friends and family as opposed to professional resources.

Book excerpt: The United States is experiencing a dramatic shift in demographics, with minorities comprising a rapidly growing proportion of the population. It is anticipated that this will likely lead to substantial changes in previously established values, needs, and priorities of the population, including health and mental health for individuals, families, and society at large. This volume focuses on determinants of minority mental health and wellness. This emphasis necessarily raises the question of just who is a minority and how is minority to be defined. The term has been defined in any number of ways. Wirth (1945, p. 347) offered one of the earliest definitions of minority: We may define a minority as a group of people who, because of their physical or cultural characteristics, are singled out from the others in the society in which they live for differential and unequal treatment, and who therefore regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination. The existence of a minority in a society implies the existence of a corresponding dominant group enjoying higher social status and greater privileges.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between racial identity, attitudes toward utilizing counseling services, and religious commitment (the independent variables) as predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure (the dependent variables) among Black adults ages 25 to 50. Data were collected from 100 participants with women comprising 75% of the sample. Results showed that pre-encounter and religious commitment were negatively associated with intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure. Second, internalization and attitudes were predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure in counseling. These results make an important contribution to research with an emphasis on psychological help-seeking behavior within the Black community. When designing interventions for the Black population, the demographic variables, previous experience, overall satisfaction with professional providers, attitudes toward seeking professional counseling help, and an individual's level of religious commitment should be carefully evaluated. Further, a collaboration between religious organizations within the Black community and professional counseling centers can assist with referrals potentially increasing utilization rates.

Book excerpt: like other collections of papers related to a single topic, this volume arose out of problem-sharing and problem-solving discussions among some of the authors. The two principal recurring issues were (1) the difficulties in translating anthropo logical knowledge so that our students could use it and (2) the difficulties of bringing existing medical anthropology literature to bear on this task. As we talked to other anthropologists teaching in other parts of the country and in various health-related schools, we recognized that our problems were similar. Similarities in our solutions led the Editors to believe that publication of our teaching experi ences and research relevant to teaching would help others and might begin the process of generating principles leading to a more coherent approach. Our colleagues supported this idea and agreed to contribute. What we agreed to write about was 'Clinically Applied Anthropology'. Much of what we were doing and certainly much of the relevant literature was applied anthropology. And our target group was composed-mostly of clinicians. The utility of the term became apparent after 1979 when another set of anthropologists began to discuss 'ainical Anthropology'. They too recognized the range of novel be haviors available to anthropologists in the health science arena and chose to focus on the clinical use of anthropology. We see this as an important endeavor, but very different from what we are proposing.
