Book excerpt: A small town with a big history, Helotes20 miles northwest of downtown San Antoniowas named for the Spanish word elotes, or corn on the cob. So extensive were the fields of corn along its namesake creek, a Spanish official in 1723 called the area el Puerto de los Olotes, or Corncob Pass. When settlers later arrived, few ancient cornfields remained. Situated along Bandera Road, the town became a stagecoach stop, and a post office was established in 1873. Nevertheless, the settlement remained rural for the next 100 years. Helotes, known as a place to let down yer hair and kick up yer heels, solidified its reputation in 1946, when John T. Floore Country Store, a dance hall and concert venue for top-rated country musicians, opened for business in downtown Helotes. The annual Cornyval Festival, inaugurated in 1966, continues this tradition. Incorporated in 1981, the town provides a verdant and hilly escape from the city.

Download or read book Folktales from the Helotes Settlement written by John Igo and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Folklore Society has been publishing a regular volume of folklore research (our PTFS series) for the past several decades. Most of these books are what we call miscellanies, compilations of the works of multiple folklorists, and they feature articles on many types of lore. We’ve also published over twenty "Extra Books," which are single-author manuscripts that examine a more focused topic. Folktales from the Helotes Settlement by John Igo is Extra Book #25. It's a collection of personal memories from our longest active member, who first joined the Society over fifty years ago. Here we find legends, customs, and beliefs of the people of the Helotes Settlement near San Antonio. These stories capture the lore of a place similar to lots of other places--our places. They're familiar to us all because, when we get right down to it, the Helotes Settlement is not very different from wherever we're from.

Book Helotes Where the Texas Hill Country Begins

Download or read book Helotes Where the Texas Hill Country Begins written by Cynthia Leal Massey and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REVISED & UPDATED EDITION! New section on San Geronimo community! Updated to 2020. Helotes became a city in 1981 and celebrates its 40th anniversary of incorporation in 2021; however, the town, named from the word elote, a Nahuatl/Spanish word meaning "corncob," became a known settlement in 1873, with the establishment of a post office. European and Mexican immigrants established ranches in the area starting in the early 1850s, and in 1881, a downtown center was founded with a general store, smithy, and a family homestead. That area is now known as Old Town Helotes, a historic district. Home of the famous honky-tonk, John T. Floore Country Store, Helotes has a rich history, even more intriguing than the myths and legends that have been the "official" lore of the town for decades. This book dispels those myths, offering a thoroughly researched and fascinating account of a town populated by hardworking pioneers, renegade Indians, elusive bandits, and impassioned citizens. Helotes, Where the Texas Hill Country Begins tells the story of a scrappy town that is quintessentially Texan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death of a Texas Ranger is the thrilling, action-packed story of the murder of Texas Ranger John Green by Cesario Menchaca, one of three Rangers of Mexican descent under Green’s command. Immediately word spread that the killing may have been the botched outcome of a contract taken out on Menchaca’s life by the notorious Gabriel Marnoch, a local naturalist who had run up against the law himself. But was it? Much more than just a story about a tragic frontier killing, it is the story of an era. The events leading up to the murder and Green’s son’s decades’ long quest for justice for his father’s killer exemplify the chaotic frontier society in Texas after the Civil War, a time fraught with political turmoil and cultural clashes. Amidst that chaos, the virgin landscape of Texas was a magnet to those interested in the natural sciences in the nineteenth century, an era often referred to as the Age of Darwin. The clash between the seemingly pastoral landscape with its offerings for science and the brutal history of the region ties this very readable regional history into the larger American story.
