Book excerpt: Life is pretty good for me, Helmut Haase, dashing detective and ladies' man extraordinaire. I'm the industrious and charming half of the Fog City Detective Agency. My partner, Shamus O'Sheagan, is the most gifted and lazy Druid this side of the pond, but even he's settled down with an Amazonian police officer. Together we managed to save the world once already, but our next case is hitting closer to home. It all started when an old friend came to our door with a wild story about angel bones and necromancers. The bones belong to Azazel, former hero of the dreaded Cretan Empire, and the necromancers want to bring him back to life. The last thing anyone wants is Azazel to return and start another angelic war. When Shamus locates our quarry in the Mediterranean, it's bye-bye Wudong, hello luxury voyage to Capri, with a girl in every port and downtime to work on my fighting skills. Too bad such pleasures won't last. Not with a coven of necromancers ready to fight us to the death over those angel bones and the fate of the world… Read about Helmut and Shamus's previous adventure in Helmut Saves the World, available now.45,000 words

Book excerpt: Three months after his rescue from an abusive boyfriend, twenty-two-year-old Romy Myers has landed his first legitimate job—bussing tables at his friend's new coffee shop. The job has brought him some stability after years of abuse have left him feeling damaged and broken. He's working hard on his panic and social anxiety, and those things are often tempered by the big, burly presence of Brendan Walker. From the moment ex-football player Brendan helped rescue Romy from his ex's abuse, he's wanted to protect him. And he does, from a distance, with joking text messages, a new gym routine to toughen him up and a genuine friendship. So far it's been easy—but Brendan's feelings aren't just friendly anymore… When an argument spirals out of control, a hot and heavy make-out session causes Romy's friendship with supposedly straight Brendan to reach a new level. The last thing Romy wants is to fall for another guy who could potentially shatter him, but Brendan also wakes up a part of him he thought had been destroyed by violence—his heart. 76,000 words

Book excerpt: Once-famous singer Anjuli Carver has returned to tiny Heaverlock Village alone and nearly broke. She's poured every last penny into a rambling Victorian manor, hoping to start over. Trouble is, her money pit is falling to pieces and the only restoration architect for miles is Rob Douglas…her ex-fiancé. For eight years, Rob has regretted not telling Anjuli why he never answered her letters. Being left at the altar broke his heart, but being used for sex one night in London after the fact nearly drove him to the edge of sanity, and he'll be damned if he allows Anjuli to wreak havoc on his life again. He'll restore her manor, all right, and give her a taste of her own medicine while he's at it. But how long can revenge last when memories of their shared past keep rushing to the surface? Soon, Rob wants answers. Why did Anjuli leave the international spotlight to become a recluse in the Scottish Borderlands? And why does she refuse to sing? Anjuli wants nothing more than to be left alone with her grief, even as she struggles to keep her sexy fantasies about Rob in check. With gossipy villagers, interfering friends and more secrets between them than notes on a scale, Anjuli and Rob will need to find forgiveness in order to work together, then decide if they're willing to risk it all on an encore performance. 88,000 words

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s event market is full of dynamic and exciting developments, innovation, new players and novel ideas, but at the same time of certain shortcomings. This new and huge market is drawing increasing attention from the event industry worldwide. The aim of this handbook is to analyse the Chinese event market, reflect on emerging trends, scrutinise the key players and identify the implica-tions for the education of future professionals in this industry. This handbook is the first of its kind on the Chinese event market written in English. It is a collection of 27articles written by 39 authors from China, Germany, Malaysia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. The contributions embrace a mix of theoretical and practical reflections, written by academics/lecturers and practitioners alike. The focus lies on business events, such as trade fairs, conventions and corporate events. Some very specifically describe a certain trend or development; others focus on overall trends. The handbook is divided into four chapters. Following an introductory chapter on the event market, the second chapter focuses on the event market in China from a global perspective. The third chapter reflects on management aspects in China’s event industry. The fourth and final chapter addresses the issue of educating professionals for the event industry.

Book Transnational Musicians

Download or read book Transnational Musicians written by Beata M. Kowalczyk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by theories pertaining to transnational mobility, ethnicity and race, gender, postcolonialism, as well as Japanese studies, Transnational Musicians explores the way Japanese musicians establish their transnational careers in the hierarchically structured classical music world. Drawing on rich material from multi-sited fieldwork and in-depth interviews with Japanese artists in Japan, France and Poland, this study portrays the structurally – and individually – conditioned opportunities and constraints of becoming a transnational classical musician. It shows how transnational artists strive to conciliate the irreconcilable: their professional identification with the dominant image of ‘rootless’ classical musicianship and their ethnocultural affiliation with Japan. As such this book critically engages with the neoliberal discourse on talent and meritocracy prevailing in the creative/cultural industry, which promotes the common image of cosmopolitan artists, whose high, universal skills allow them to carry out their occupational activity internationally, regardless of such prescriptive criteria as gender, ethnicity and race. Highly interdisciplinary, this book will appeal to students and researchers interested in such fields as migration, transnational mobility, ethnicity and race in the creative/cultural sector, gender studies, Japanese culture and other related social issues. It will also be instructive for professionals from the world of classical music, as well as ordinary readers passionate about Japanese society.

Book Theory of International Politics

Download or read book Theory of International Politics written by Kenneth N. Waltz and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Theory of International Politics . . . National politics is the realm of authority, of administration, and of law. International politics is the realm of power, of struggle, and of accommodation. . . . States, like people, are insecure in proportion to the extent of their freedom. If freedom is wanted, insecurity must be accepted. Organizations that establish relations of authority and control may increase security as they decrease freedom. If might does not make right, whether among people or states, then some institution or agency has intervened to lift them out of natures realm. The more influential the agency, the stronger the desire to control it becomes. In contrast, units in an anarchic order act for their own sakes and not for the sake of preserving an organization and furthering their fortunes within it. Force is used for ones own interest. In the absence of organization, people or states are free to leave one another alone. Even when they do not do so, they are better able, in the absence of the politics of the organization, to concentrate on the politics of the problem and to aim for a minimum agreement that will permit their separate existence rather than a maximum agreement for the sake of maintaining unity. If might decides, then bloody struggles over right can more easily be avoided.
