Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You have found the first guide to head-mounted displays (HMDs) that places the emphasis where it belongs - on the end-user. This volume addresses key disciplines for future head-mounted virtual reality (VR), industrial and military display systems. It gives you a solid understanding of factors critical to end-user acceptance: user-centered design, imaging and optics, anthropometry, safety, human factors, visual perception, and system testing. HMD visual displays, image alignment, head and neck strain, and brain-actuated control are explored in depth. You also have access to a superb categorization of HMD optical designs, and a state-of-the-art model for stereoscopic viewing. From basic optical parameters to supporting HMDs with head-tracking data, this guide covers the important aspects of designing cutting-edge HMDs for the designer, user, and buyer of next-generation devices and systems.

Book Mobile Displays

Download or read book Mobile Displays written by Achintya K. Bhowmik and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile display industry has witnessed rapid growth, in both volume and diversification, in recent years. This trend is expected to persist with continued consumer demand for mobile communications and computing applications. Mobile displays are now integral to a wide range of devices such as MP3 players, digital cameras, PDAs, GPS map readers, portable DVD players, and electronic books, as well as the ubiquitous mobile phone and laptop computers. This proliferation of products has fuelled a significant investment into the research and development of the mobile display, with key research laboratories across the display industry and academia producing many exciting technological advancements. With contributions from well-known experts, in both industry and academia, this book presents a comprehensive coverage of the mobile display in a single volume. Ranging from an in-depth analysis of the requirements that the displays must meet, through current devices, to emerging technologies, the text features: mobile environment and human-factor considerations for the display; advances in the incumbent active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) technologies; backlighting and light manipulation techniques; mobile display driver electronics and interface technologies; emerging technologies including active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED), electronic paper displays, and system-on-glass (SOG) developments; application developments in eyewear, mobile projector, and 3D displays. Mobile Displays: Technology and Applications presents, in addition to the fundamentals, a detailed update on state-of-the-art advancements. It is an invaluable resource for practicing electronics and display engineers working on the development of mobile displays and their applications. It is also an extensive reference for graduates taking special courses in display technologies. The Society for Information Display (SID) is an international society, which has the aim of encouraging the development of all aspects of the field of information display. Complementary to the aims of the society, the Wiley-SID series is intended to explain the latest developments in information display technology at a professional level. The broad scope of the series addresses all facets of information displays from technical aspects through systems and prototypes to standards and ergonomics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on augmented reality (AR) technology, which uses the real environment to superimpose virtual elements. Therefore, the reader can create applications that simulate scenarios that can be dangerous or expensive to generate in the real world. AR has proven helpful in education, marketing, and industrial scenarios. AR technology improves the user experience of various disciplines, incorporating virtual information that maximizes the experience and adds knowledge. This book intends students, researchers, and developers to have the possibility of finding the foundations on which AR technology rests. Our book intends that students, researchers, and developers: (i) learn the basics of AR; (ii) understand the technologies that support AR; (iii) know about AR applications that have been a watershed; (iv) gain an understanding of the critical elements needed to implement an AR application; (v) acquire skill in the step-by-step development of an AR application; (vi) learn how to use the instruments to evaluate an AR application; (vii) understand how to present the information about study cases; and (viii) gain knowledge about AR challenges and trends.

This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) present flight, navigation, and weapon information in the pilot's line of sight. The HMD was developed to allow the pilot to retain aircraft and weapon information while looking off boresight. This document reviews current state of the art in HMDs and presents a design guide for the HMD engineer in identifying several critical HMD issues: symbol stabilization, inadequate definitions, undefined symbol drive laws, helmet considerations, and Field Of View (FOV) vs. resolution tradeoff requirements. In particular, display latency is a key issue for HMDs. In addition to requiring further experimental studies, it impacts the definition and control law issues. Symbol stabilization is also critical. In the case of the Apache helicopter, the lack of compensation for pilot head motion creates excessive workload during hovering and Nap Of the Earth (NOE) flight. This translates into excessive training requirements. There is no agreed upon set of definitions or descriptions for how HMD symbols are driven to compensate for pilot head motion. A set of definitions is proposed to address this. There are several specific areas where simulation and flight experiments are needed: development of hover and NOE symbologies which compensate for pilot head movement; display latency and sampling, and the tradeoff between FOV, sensor resolution and symbology.
