Book Hello Yellow Glove

Download or read book Hello Yellow Glove written by Jim Dine and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Dine's status as a master draughtsman is unquestioned and this book presents the best of his most recent drawings. Hello Yellow Glove opens with one of Dine's most treasured motifs, Pinocchio. Using dense charcoal and dripping washes, Dine depicts the sinister edge to Carlo Collodi's story and Pinocchio's isolation in his quest to become a real boy. With similar dark layers and dissolving forms Dine also depicts botanical motifs such as the thistle and catalpa tree. In addition to these bodies of work, Hello Yellow Glove presents Dine's portrait of Gerhard Steidl, an ambitious suite of nine drawings made by the artist in his Göttingen studio. Alongside reproductions of the drawings are photographs of Dine taken by Steidl during the sittings, which form both a candid portrait of the artist and offer a rare glimpse into his working processes. Born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim Dine is a prolific painter, draughtsman, print-maker and photographer. Initially associated with the Pop movement, Dine's career spans over forty years and his work is held in many private and public collections. His books with Steidl include Birds (2001), The Photographs, so far (2003) and Hot Dream (52 Books) (2008).

Book Nana

  • Author : Émile Zola
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-03-26
  • ISBN : 0192545353
  • Pages : 421 pages

Download or read book Nana written by Émile Zola and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'She was the golden beast, an unconscious force, the very scent of her could bring the world to ruin.' Nana, daughter of a drunk and a laundress, is the Helen of Troy of Paris. A sexually magnetic high-class prostitute and actress, she becomes a celebrity, rapidly conquering society, ruining all men who fall under her spell-especially Count Muffat, Chamberlain to the Empress. Nana herself meets a terrible fate, consumed by her own dissipation and extravagance, just as the disastrous war with Prussia is declared. Nana is the ninth instalment in the twenty volume Rougon-Macquart series. The novel opens in 1867, the year of the World Fair, when Paris, thronged by a cosmopolitan élite, was la Ville Lumière, the glittering setting-and object-of Zola's scathing denunciation of society's hypocrisy and moral corruption. Nana comes to symbolize the Second Empire regime itself in all its excesses; but in the final chapters, the narrator seems to suggest that the coming disaster is not so much a result of the corruption of the Empire, as of rampant female sexuality.

Her whole life, Lucy Knisley wanted to be a mother. But when it was finally the perfect time, conceiving turned out to be harder than anything she’d ever attempted. Fertility problems were followed by miscarriages, and her eventual successful pregnancy plagued by health issues, up to a dramatic, near-death experience during labor and delivery. Book Love in Condition Yellow

Download or read book Love in Condition Yellow written by Sophia Raday and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go on a date with a soldier turned police officer? Me? And discuss Gandhi’s experiments with truth with a gun-toting Republican? The last thing Berkeley-dwelling peace activist Sophia Raday expected was to fall in love with a straightlaced Oakland police officer. As someone who had run away from cops dressed in riot gear at protests, Sophia was ambivalent, to say the least, at the prospect of dating Barrett, who was not only a cop but also a West Point graduate, an Airborne Ranger, and a major in the Army Reserve. During their courtship the two argued about many of the matters that divide the United States, things like drug policy and race relations. Startled by the freedom she found in a relationship of differences, by the challenge of sparring with Barrett, and by his steadfast acceptance of her, Sophia unwittingly fell in love. Then, just when Sophia believed her family was starting a new chapter with the birth of their son, came September 11. Barrett’s belief that he must always stay in Condition Yellow—the terminology coined by his favorite Guns & Ammo writer for a state of alert in which you realize your life is in danger and you may need to shoot someone—was suddenly in the forefront of their lives. Sophia and Barrett began to confront, on a very personal level, their differing viewpoints on polarizing values like fear, duty, family, and patriotism. When Barrett’s military duties escalated along with the country’s, Sophia found herself in the surprising position of military wife, living on an army base during the 2004 elections, and struggling to find peace with herself and her husband in this new world. It was a struggle that would continue up to the point of Barrett’s deployment to Iraq. Love in Condition Yellow not only provides a vivid, poignant portrait of this unusual union, but also tells the larger story of how love doesn’t necessarily come from sameness, and peace doesn’t necessarily come from agreement.

Book excerpt: Jenny Crenshaw was an ordinary teenage girl in high school, hanging out with her best friend Kerri. When Jenny started having headaches every day, she thought it may be stress from school and her eighteenth birthday coming up. But what was happening to Jenny was far more than an ordinary headache. It waited for Jenny; watching her, taunting with vivid images of burning flesh and screams she could not fight off. It was a feeling that she was more than just a teenage girl. When Jenny was angry, horrible things seem to happen all around her, and the words of another kept filling her head. Who was this? What did they want with her? It had begun and nothing could stop the knowledge that something was coming for her. Would she survive a curse of hundreds of years old or would it take her to the depths of hell? A rage that burned inside her would soon unleash the truth behind a curse that haunted her dreams. Would she survive or would it consume her? Would an angel come to rescue her or could the curse destroy everything and everyone around her? The thoughts ran rampant inside her head. She kept hearing voices over and over; as if her head would explode. The small town of Newton, Massachusetts, would never be the same, as the hauntings become real. Would Sara Crenshaw, Jenny's mother, be able to save her daughter or will all be lost to the past? Could Jenny's best friend, Kerri, help her uncover the past and change its course? Maybe, but she is the chosen one. Could the town, her friends, and all that Jenny loved, be destroyed as they come to claim her? Or will the divine love of an angel save her? Maybe. But then again, maybe not!
