Book excerpt: As someone on the spectrum, growing up, I missed out on children's books in which I could relate to the main character. Now, hearing from parents of children on the spectrum, it was clear that there is still a need. But I didn't want to just write a book with a relatable character; I wanted to write something that offered potential aids, from one autistic to another. I also wanted to help caregivers by providing a little more information, an inside look, as to how we on the spectrum often think and ways to be supportive. So meet Amme.---This guide is a refreshing, honest portrayal of what life is like for a child with autism. It was informative, while providing insight and scientific terminology that can be empowering for children on the spectrum to see in a text. I could see myself using the guide to introduce ASD to school age students, as well as parents who may be unsure about how to help their child with ASD. Though there was a lot of text, this guide could also be simplified by the reader to introduce younger children to the varying needs of others. Overall, I believe there is a deficit in honest & helpful depictions of children with special needs in the literary world. This guide could help be a resource to change that! Ellen K. Early Childhood and Special Education/Montessori Certified Teacher ---Amorette French is a courageous human being who has opened her heart and mind to others by sharing the perilous journey of her life to benefit autistic children as well as their caregivers, families and friends.
