Bob Riley has committed to complete his late wife’s bucket list of hikes after she perished on the John Muir Trail. He should have gone with her. He could have saved her life. His current partner, Liz, comes down with the flu just days before their trip to Grand Teton National Park but urges him to go alone. Armed with bear spray, his mischievous marmot hiking mascot, and four days of food in a bulky, bear-proof container, Bob sets off on the iconic Teton Crest Trail. A group of eight young men attempt to complete the trail that beat them two years ago, before their growing life commitments drive them apart. Will trail magic be enough to overcome the unexpected challenges the trail throws their way? How will Bob share the diverse mountain landscape, shriveling glaciers, fascinating wildlife encounters, and cascading streams with Liz and Cathy, his late wife? Will all of Bob’s paying it forward lead to payback when he needs it most? Will his aging body and conflicted mind allow him to live up to his commitment to Cathy? Follow Bob and his trail friends as they experience the wonders and dangers hidden beyond the jagged peaks most only see from the scenic drive. This is a work of fiction.

Book excerpt: Teton Romance Trilogy Book 1 Evelyn Lewis' secret dream of marrying her brother's best friend is shattered when he leaves their home town to seek his fortune elsewhere. For six long years, she's waited and wondered if he would return. After the shocking murder of her parents, her brother is the only family she has left. Refusing to accept a betrothal to a man she doesn't love, she decides to take control of her destiny and confront her parents' killer. Growing up, Alexander Walker has known only violence at the hands of his cruel father. After the death of his mother, he embarks on a journey into the uncharted wilderness to test his resolve as a fur trapper and mountain man. When an impulsive decision leads him back to his childhood home, he finds more than he bargained for. Amid the rugged Teton wilderness, fate suddenly throws Alex and Evelyn together. The quiet protective boy she remembers is now as strange to her as the world she's been forced into. Wary of the hardened man he has become, Evelyn must put her trust in him in order to survive. Alex's memories of Evelyn are of a pesky little girl, but he can't deny his growing feelings for the beautiful and spirited woman she is now. His biggest obstacle in winning her heart may not be her uncertainty of him, but a fear that has haunted him all his life. In a primitive and brutal world, can Alex and Evelyn forge a love as solid as the mountains, or will the past come back to haunt them both? ***Content Warning: This book contains mild language, mild violence, and adult situations including physical intimacy, and is intended for adult readers. Heat level 2-3 (scale 0-5) PG13 If tragedy in an epilogue after the main story has concluded disturbs or upsets you, please do not read this book! Teton Sunrise is the first book in a trilogy of books about life as it might have been for one family in the harsh wilderness at the base of the Teton Mountains long before the area was settled. Each book is a standalone, but they also build on each other. Events and characters in one book play a role in subsequent books. Teton Sunrise is a complete love story for the hero and heroine in this book, although we see them again in subsequent books. While the book is a romance, it is also a wilderness action and adventure novel, and I didn't want to sugar-coat reality. The life these characters led was not easy. It was harsh, and often brutal. The events that occur in the epilogue, which involve some of the supporting characters in this book, are necessary for the continuation of this trilogy... Other titles in the Teton Romance Trilogy Teton Splendor Teton Sunset Teton Season of Joy (novella) The Teton Romance Trilogy crosses over with the Yellowstone Romance Series as well as the Wilderness Brides Series Keywords: Grand Tetons, mountain men, wilderness, western historical romance, action and adventure romance

Book Subpar Parks

  • ISBN : 0593185552
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Subpar Parks written by Amber Share and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **A New York Times Bestseller!** Based on the wildly popular Instagram account, Subpar Parks features both the greatest hits and brand-new content, all celebrating the incredible beauty and variety of America’s national parks juxtaposed with the clueless and hilarious one-star reviews posted by visitors. Subpar Parks, both on the popular Instagram page and in this humorous, informative, and collectible book, combines two things that seem like they might not work together yet somehow harmonize perfectly: beautiful illustrations and informative, amusing text celebrating each national park paired with the one-star reviews disappointed tourists have left online. Millions of visitors each year enjoy Glacier National Park, but for one visitor, it was simply "Too cold for me!" Another saw the mind-boggling vistas of Bryce Canyon as "Too spiky!" Never mind the person who visited the thermal pools at Yellowstone National Park and left thinking, “Save yourself some money, boil some water at home.” Featuring more than 50 percent new material, the book will include more depth and insight into the most popular parks, such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Acadia National Parks; anecdotes and tips from rangers; and much more about author Amber Share's personal love and connection to the outdoors. Equal parts humor and love for the national parks and the great outdoors, it's the perfect gift for anyone who loves to spend time outside as well as have a good read (and laugh) once they come indoors.

Book The Good Times Are All Gone Now

Download or read book The Good Times Are All Gone Now written by Julie Whitesel Weston and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julie Whitesel Weston left her hometown of Kellogg, Idaho, but eventually it pulled her back. Only when she returned to this mining community in the Idaho Panhandle did she begin to see the paradoxes of the place where she grew up. Her book combines oral history, journalistic investigation, and personal reminiscence to take a fond but hard look at life in Kellogg during “the good times.” Kellogg in the late 1940s and fifties was a typical American small town complete with high school football and basketball teams, marching band, and anti-Communist clubs; yet its bars, gambling dens, and brothels were entrenched holdovers from a rowdier frontier past. The Bunker Hill Mining Company, the largest employer, paid miners good wages for difficult, dangerous work, while the quest for lead, silver, and zinc denuded the mountainsides and laced the soil and water with contaminants. Weston researched the late-nineteenth-century founding of Kellogg and her family’s five generations in Idaho. She interviewed friends she grew up with, their parents, and her own parents’ friends—miners mostly, but also businesspeople, housewives, and professionals. Much of this memoir of place set during the Cold War and post-McCarthyism is told through their voices. But Weston also considers how certain people made a difference in her life, especially her band director, her ski coach, and an attorney she worked for during a major strike. She also explores her charged relationship with her father, a hardworking doctor revered in the community for his dedication but feared at home for his drinking and rages. The Good Times Are All Gone Now begins the day the smokestacks came down, and it reaches far back into collective and personal memory to understand a way of life now gone. The company town Weston knew is a different place, where “Uncle Bunker” is a Superfund site, and where the townspeople, as in previous hard times, have endured to reinvent Kellogg—not once, but twice.

Book excerpt: In Niceville, a pleasant Southern town where evil lurks just beneath the surface, two back-to-back airplane crashes set off a spellbinding chain reaction of murder, inadvertent kidnapping, and double-dealing. Detective Nick Kavanaugh must balance his investigation into the accidents with family concerns and a long-buried mystery. He and his wife Kate, a family lawyer, have taken in Kate’s sister and her two children, escaping their abusive father Byron Deitz. The Kavanaughs are also caring for the orphaned Rainey Teague, who recently survived a strange kidnapping and has come back a very different child. Rainey was not the last person to vanish from a Niceville street; most recently, an administrator from Rainey’s school, and—even worse—Kate’s father, a local historian, have gone missing. Using her father’s files, Kate and Nick start to unearth their town’s bloodstained past, trying to discover the truth behind generations of disappearances. But a sinister someone—or something—stands in their way.
