Book excerpt: Nietzsche wrote "The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music", one of his most influential works, during his intensive friendship with Richard Wagner in Basel, after meeting him in Leipzig in 1868. In 1869, at the young age of 24, Nietzsche accepted a professorship in philology, which facilitated his acquaintance with the composer, who lived in Tribschen. In 1871, he began work on his book, originally titled "Origin and Goal of Tragedy". When it was published in Leipzig in January 1872, Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geist der Musik (The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music) was warmly received by Wagner. The scholarly community, however, remained largely silent, except for the classical philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (1848-1931), Nietzsche's former colleague, who criticized the book in his "Zukunftsphilologie. Wilamowitz's critique shaped the direction of classical studies well into the 1940s, leaving Nietzsche largely marginalized. Nietzsche was 27 at the time of publication, and largely summarizes all of his major ideas up until that point. This translation is from the second edition Nietzsche published in 1886, which was re-titled "The birth of tragedy or Hellenism and Pessimism", sometimes translated "Greekness and Pessimism". This second edition contains the famous essay "Attempt at Self-Criticism". Here he introduces to the public the concepts of the Apollonian and Dionysian forces, representing the rational, orderly aspects of human existence and the chaotic, instinctual elements, respectively. Nietzsche argues that the interplay between these forces is central to the creation of meaningful art, particularly in the genre of tragedy, which he sees as a profound expression of the human condition. This seminal work posits that the beauty of the Greek tragedy arose from the tension and interplay between these Psychological opposing forces, suggesting that tragedy embodies the fundamental contradictions of human realities. Freudian theories of the subconscious were deeply influenced by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer's belief in these meta-psychological forces, which Nietzsche calls later the "inner gods". Composed from essays written from 1869-71, The Birth of Tragedy was first printed in Leipzig in 1872 under the title "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”. In 1886, the same publisher printed a new new edition under the new title "Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechentum und Pessimismus" with a second preface "Versuch einer Selbstkritik” where Nietzsche criticizes his own work. Both prefaces from these two versions are included here. Here in his first major work, Nietzsche articulates a semi-Hegelian tragic dichotomy of pre-cosmogonic energy underlying all of human struggle made manifest most explicitly in Greek tragedy. For the Greeks understood most clearly the forces which were driving the ethos of their civilization, finding a balance between chaos and order. It is a suspiciously metaphysical description of the origins of human culture from a man who believed it was his purpose as a “world-historical” individual to destroy the lie of the existence of Metaphysics. For as much as he criticized German Critical and Idealistic Philosophy of German, he shared an unwavering admiration for the Greek Philosophers, nearly to the point of worship. This is a new translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1869 "Die Geburt der Tragödie" / The Birth of Tragedy. The original German follows the English translation for reference.

Haussmann The influences that exercised power over him in those days may be described in the three following terms: Hellenism, Schopenhauer, Wagner. His love of Hellenism certainly led him to philology; but, as a matter of fact, what concerned him most was to obtain a wide view of things in general, and this he hoped to derive from that science; philology in itself, with his splendid method and thorough way of going to work, served him only as a means to an end. If Hellenism was the first strong influence which already in Pforta obtained a sway over my brother, in the winter of 1865-66, a completely new, and therefore somewhat subversive, influence was introduced into his life with Schopenhauer's philosophy. When he reached Leipzig in the autumn of 1865, he was very downcast; for the experiences that had befallen him during his one year of student life in Bonn had deeply depressed him.
