Book The Limits of Exactitude in Greek Roman and Byzantine Literature and Textual Transmission

Download or read book The Limits of Exactitude in Greek Roman and Byzantine Literature and Textual Transmission written by Nicoletta Bruno and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on Calvino’s observations on Exactitude in Six Memos for the Next Millennium, the present book elucidates on the possible definitions of exactitude, the endeavor of reaching exactitude, and the undeniable limits to the achievement of this ambitious milestone. The eighteen essays in this interdisciplinary volume show how ancient and medieval authors have been dealing with the problem of exactitude vs. inexactitude and have been able to exploit the ambiguities related to these two concepts to various ends. The articles focus on rhetoric and historiography (section I), exact sciences and technical disciplines (II), the peculiarity of quotations (III), cases of programmatic inexactitude (IV) and textual transmission (V). Several interconnected questions weave a net across the volume: to what extent is exactitude the goal in ancient and medieval texts? How can the concepts of accuracy and inaccuracy aid the reinterpretation of an already known text or fact? To what extent can certain definitions of exactitude be stretched, without turning into inexactitude? The volume presents an extensive study capable of highlighting the shrewdness and aptness of the concepts introduced by Calvino more than thirty years ago.

Book The Complete Historical Works of Xenophon

Download or read book The Complete Historical Works of Xenophon written by Xenophon and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DigiCat presents to you this meticulously edited collection of Xenophon's historical works, formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Content: Anabasis Cyropaedia Hellenica Agesilaus Polity of the Lacedaemonians Polity of the Athenians Anabasis is Xenophon's most famous book. The seven-tome book of the Anabasis describes The March of the Ten Thousand and their return to Greece. Xenophon accompanied the Ten Thousand, a large army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger, who intended to seize the throne of Persia from his brother, Artaxerxes II. The narration of the journey is Xenophon's best known work, and "one of the great adventures in human history". Hellenica is one of the most important primary sources for the History of the Peloponnesian War and the war's aftermath. Many consider this a very personal work, written by Xenophon in retirement on his Spartan estate, intended primarily for circulation among his friends, for people who knew the main protagonists and events, often because they had participated in them. It covers the events in Greece from 411 to 362 BC, and is considered to be the continuation of the History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. Cyropaedia is a biography of Cyrus the Great, the founder of Achaemenid Empire and the first Persian Empire. It is "a political romance, describing the education of the ideal ruler, trained to rule as a benevolent despot over his admiring and willing subjects." Aspects of it would become a model for medieval writers of the genre known as mirrors for princes. In turn it was a strong influence upon the most well-known but atypical of these, Machiavelli's The Prince.

Book A Dictionary of Classical Greek Quotations

Download or read book A Dictionary of Classical Greek Quotations written by Marinos Yeroulanos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Human wisdom is of little or no value', wrote Plato in his Apology. And yet the ancient Greeks, including Plato himself, more than any other people of antiquity were fascinated by the pursuit of the wisdom they called philosophia. That search for knowledge involved an extensive use of maxims and quotations, as we can see from those expressions of Homer prefaced by the phrase 'as people say'. Homer, the Seven Sages and the Pre-Socratic philosophers are still extensively quoted in all the major western languages. Yet for all their popularity, until now there has been no single resource to which interested readers might turn. This unique reference book offers one of the most comprehensive selections of Greek quotations ever committed to print. With its English text matched by the original Greek, the volume collects 7500 entries, ranging from the archaic period to late antiquity, and across philosophy, drama, poetry, history, science and medicine, each indexed with key words to enable fast sourcing. Together, these selections provide an incomparable insight into the glories of Greek civilization.

Book The Ten Thousand in Thrace

Download or read book The Ten Thousand in Thrace written by Jan P. Stronk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Anabasis has been in continuous use as one of the main books for the introduction into classical Greek, it is surprising that there are virtually no historical and/or archaeological commentaries to the text. Much of the training of students of the ancient world is focused on Greece and Rome and other 'Hochkulturen'. In Books VI.iii-vi and VII of the Anabasis the classical tradi-tion illuminates one of the 'Randkulturen', that of the Thracians. This part of the Anabasis forms a 'time-exposure' of an important part of Thrace in 400-399. Impor-tant developments, both for Thrace and for the Greek world, took place in this period and were described by an eyewitness. The commentary is preceded by two introductory chapters, one on the army of the 'Ten Thousand' and one on Thrace. These have been inserted because neither armies nor Thrace normally feature in the classical student's curriculum.
