Book excerpt: Republishing all of SFWA Grandmaster Damon Knight's books, in conjunction with the author's estate - see all of Damon Knight's books from ReAnimus Press!Anti-social behavior is "cured"? by giving everyone an "analogue", a mental imprint of an authority figure that intervenes whenever violent or otherwise harmful acts are contemplated. What could be more perfect? Twenty-first century civilization has no war, no anxiety, no poverty. Why? Because you have a remote-control, computer conscience, keeping you on the straight and narrow. There's one small catch, of course: you have no choice. You are a prisoner of mental manipulation.Young Arthur Bass is an Immune, one of the few who has escaped this stifling control. But when his "subversive" nature is discovered, he must flee or be annihilated. As an undergroundwanderer and explorer, he meets brilliant and beautiful Annie Silvers. Together, they become rebels determined to rescue human beings from the robot state. But being a rebel is the most dangerous profession of all."One of the most perceptive, fascinating, and delightfully horrible Utopias I've ever read."--Robert A. W. Lowndes"There's a voice in your brain...but its not yours! Nerve-shattering...a chase sequence on a par with the best of Hitchcock"--The New York Times

Book Temperance Creek

Download or read book Temperance Creek written by Pamela Royes and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early seventies, some of us were shot like stars from our parents' homes. This was an act of nature, bigger than ourselves. In the austere beauty and natural reality of Hell's Canyon of Eastern Oregon, one hundred miles from pavement, Pam, unable to identify with her parent's world and looking for deeper pathways has a chance encounter with returning Vietnam warrior Skip Royes. Skip, looking for a bridge from survival back to connection, introduces Pam to the vanishing culture of the wandering shepherd and together they embark on a four–year sojourn into the wilderness. From the back of a horse, Pam leads her packstring of readers from overlook to water crossing, down trails two thousand years old, and from the vantages she chooses for us, we feel the edges of our own experiences. It is a memoir of falling in love with a place and a man and the price extracted for that love. Written with deep lyricism, Temperance Creek is a work of haunting beauty, fresh and irreverent and rooted in the grit and pleasure of daily life. This is Pam's story, but the courage and truth in the telling is part of our human experience. Seen through a slower more primary mirror, one not so crowded with objectivity, Pam's memoir, is a kind of home–coming, a family reunion for shooting stars.

Book Paving the Great Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Gold
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2014-11-18
  • ISBN : 0231168268
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Paving the Great Way written by Jonathan Gold and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu (fourthÐfifth century C.E.) is known for his critical contribution to Buddhist Abhidharma thought, his turn to the Mahayana tradition, and his concise, influential Yogacara-Vij–anavada texts. Paving the Great Way reveals another dimension of his legacy: his integration of several seemingly incompatible intellectual and scriptural traditions, with far-ranging consequences for the development of Buddhist epistemology and the theorization of tantra. Most scholars read VasubandhuÕs texts in isolation and separate his intellectual development into distinct phases. Featuring close studies of VasubandhuÕs Abhidharmakosabhasya, Vyakhyayukti, Vimsatika, and Trisvabhavanirdesa, among other works, this book identifies recurrent treatments of causality and scriptural interpretation that unify distinct strands of thought under a single, coherent Buddhist philosophy. In VasubandhuÕs hands, the BuddhaÕs rejection of the self as a false construction provides a framework through which to clarify problematic philosophical issues, such as the nature of moral agency and subjectivity under a broadly causal worldview. Recognizing this continuity of purpose across VasubandhuÕs diverse corpus recasts the interests of the philosopher and his truly innovative vision, which influenced Buddhist thought for a millennium and continues to resonate with todayÕs philosophical issues. An appendix includes extensive English-language translations of the major texts discussed.
