This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The first volume offers survey essays on major topics, such as sexual identities, fandom, women's writing groups, and feminist spirituality; the second provides alphabetically arranged entries on more specific subjects, such as Hindu mythology, Toni Morrison, magical realism, and Margaret Atwood. Entries are written by expert contributors and cite works for further reading, and the set closes with a selected, general bibliography. Students and general readers love science fiction and fantasy. And science fiction and fantasy works increasingly explore gender issues, feature women as central characters, and are written by women writers. Older works demonstrate attitudes toward women in times past, while more recent works grapple with contemporary social issues. Book Hinduism and Environmental Ethics

Download or read book Hinduism and Environmental Ethics written by Christopher G. Framarin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the standard arguments for and against the claim that certain Hindu texts and traditions attribute direct moral standing to animals and plants are unconvincing. It presents careful, extensive, and original interpretations of passages from the Manusmrti (law), the Mahābhārata (literature), and the Yogasūtra (philosophy), and argues that these texts attribute direct moral standing to animals and plants for at least three reasons: they are sentient, they are alive, and they possess a range of other relevant attributes and abilities. This book is of interest to scholars of Hinduism and the environment, religion and the environment, Hindu and/or Buddhist philosophy more broadly, and environmental ethics.

Book On an Auspicious Day at Dawn

Download or read book On an Auspicious Day at Dawn written by Heidrun Brückner and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book consists of a collection of essays on aspects of Tulu oral literature and its cultural and religious context. Taking sung poetic ritual texts from the west coast of South India (coastal Karnataka) as her starting point, the author addresses the relationship between text structure and the social and geographical distribution of particular local and subregional cults; questions of gender and genre, of the correlation between narrative and ritual dramatization especially with respect to death, and of success and failure of rituals in the local perception. One essay studies features of South Indian popular cults in a wider perspective. Two of the nine essays discuss historical material relating to Basel Mission activities in the area and compare texts collected in the 19th century with versions collected by the author in the 1980s. The last paper provides a short synopsis of the author's 1995 German monograph on the topic.

Book Yaksagana Rangabhumi

Download or read book Yaksagana Rangabhumi written by Katrin Binder and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yaksagana dance-drama of the coastal regions of the south Indian union state of Karnataka is still a thriving theatre tradition. Characterised by its distinct musical style, a lively blend of sung poetry and improvised dialogues, impressive costumes and vigorous dancing, this genre combines many features prevalent in Indian performing arts. The volume by Katrin Binder presents a general overview of the dance-drama and its representation in academic literature, followed by terminological and methodological considerations. These reflect the author's own training as a yaksagana artist, which also informs the descriptive sections focussing on the songs and dances of the pre-performance rituals. Three exemplary performances are analysed in detail, illustrating trends in performance settings, techniques and costuming. A context-oriented section assesses the current yaksagana scene, documenting troupes, repertoire, sponsors and other factors. This section also addresses the dynamics of change shaping this dance-drama between vow-performances, commercial venture and regional cultural icon. An appendix outlines the possible development of yaksagana in the context of other south Indian performing arts by tracing its literary history. Yaksagana's basic rhythmic patterns and the most important songs discussed in the main study are provided in a performance notation. Accompanying visual material is accessible online.

The volume is multidisciplinary in its approach and includes studies ranging from anthropology, history, religious studies, medicine and medical humanities to folklore, literature, hermeneutics and philosophy.

Book excerpt: The present volume explores a specific aspect of creativity in South Asian systems of knowledge, literature and rituals. Under the heading of?adaptive reuse,? it discusses the relationship between innovation and perpetuation of earlier forms and contents of knowledge and aesthetic expressions within the process of creating new works. Although this relation rarely became the topic of explicit reflections in the South Asian intellectual traditions, it is here investigated by taking a closer look at the treatment of older materials by later authors.
