Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the notes of lectures given at the school on "Nonlinear Dy namics in Solids" held at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, 2-6 October 1989 under the patronage of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. Nonlinear dynamics has become a highly active research area, owing to many interesting developments during the last three decades in the theoretical analysis of dynamical processes in both Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. Research has been focused on a variety of problems, such as the characteristics of regular and chaotic motion in Hamiltonian dynamics, the problem of quantum chaos, the forma tion and properties of solitary spatio-temporal structures, the occurrence of strange attractors in dissipative systems, and the bifurcation scenarios leading to complex time behaviour. Until recently, predictions of the theory have been tested predominantly on insta bilities in hydrodynamic systems, where many interesting experiments have provided valuable input and have led to a fruitful interaction between experiment and theory. Fluid systems are certainly good candidates for performing clean experiments free from disturbing influences: with fluids, compared to solids, it is simpler to prepare good samples, the relevant length and time scales are in easily accessible ranges, and it is possible to do measurements "inside" the fluid, because it can be filled in after the construction of the apparatus. Further, the theory describing the macroscopic dynamics of fluids is well established and contains only very few parameters, all of which have well-known values.

Book Multimedia Modeling Modeling Multimedia Information And Systems Proceedings Of The First International Workshop

Download or read book Multimedia Modeling Modeling Multimedia Information And Systems Proceedings Of The First International Workshop written by Ahmed Karmouch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-09-24 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multimedia systems result from the merging of the computing, communications and broadcasting industries. This merging has been made possible today by the technical advances in high speed broadband networks, computer desktop workstations, and information storage and compression techniques.Currently, text and image are the predominant forms of information exchanged over the Internet. However, there are clear signs that the situation is rapidly changing with the recent emergence of multimedia applications in the area of education, business, e-commerce and entertainment — resulting, therefore, in increased consumption of network bandwidth and in the creation of a very large volume of information that needs to be processed and stored. This trend has made strong demands on the multimedia modeling research community to develop new semantic models that will further facilitate the creation, representation, manipulation and animation of multimedia content with a better level of granularity than what is possible to achieve with today's multimedia information systems. This volume explores issues associated with multimedia modeling information and systems and presents the current status of work in this field. It covers a broad range of theoretical, conceptual and practical topics and addresses the needs of a wide audience, including researchers, multimedia systems designers and users of multimedia systems.

Book Nobler Than the Angels Lower Than a Worm

Download or read book Nobler Than the Angels Lower Than a Worm written by Gary R. Sattler and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Pietist view of the individual through the writings of the Lutheran "reform orthodox" theologian Heinrich M ̧ller and later Lutheran Pietist August Hermann Francke. While demonstrating the close connection between the two movements, it is concerned primarily with Pietist anthropology. Francke's life and conversion experience are used to introduce the Pietist understanding of the person. The book is divided into a treatment of the person by nature, the inner person (heart, soul, conscience, mind), the will, the role and place of affliction in the person's life, the outer person (the body, neighbor, work, money and possessions, time), and death and the afterlife. Each element of the person is examined from the Pietist's perspective with numerous illustrative quotations taken from the sermons and devotional writings of Francke and M ̧ller, allowing the reader to understand the concerns and methods of Pietist preachers and teachers, to grasp the sources of tension between the Pietists and the "orthodox", and to see more of the red threads which run through the various "renewal" movements in modern church history.

Book The WEIRDest People in the World

Download or read book The WEIRDest People in the World written by Joseph Henrich and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of 2020 A Bloomberg Best Non-Fiction Book of 2020 A Behavioral Scientist Notable Book of 2020 A Human Behavior & Evolution Society Must-Read Popular Evolution Book of 2020 A bold, epic account of how the co-evolution of psychology and culture created the peculiar Western mind that has profoundly shaped the modern world. Perhaps you are WEIRD: raised in a society that is Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic. If so, you’re rather psychologically peculiar. Unlike much of the world today, and most people who have ever lived, WEIRD people are highly individualistic, self-obsessed, control-oriented, nonconformist, and analytical. They focus on themselves—their attributes, accomplishments, and aspirations—over their relationships and social roles. How did WEIRD populations become so psychologically distinct? What role did these psychological differences play in the industrial revolution and the global expansion of Europe during the last few centuries? In The WEIRDest People in the World, Joseph Henrich draws on cutting-edge research in anthropology, psychology, economics, and evolutionary biology to explore these questions and more. He illuminates the origins and evolution of family structures, marriage, and religion, and the profound impact these cultural transformations had on human psychology. Mapping these shifts through ancient history and late antiquity, Henrich reveals that the most fundamental institutions of kinship and marriage changed dramatically under pressure from the Roman Catholic Church. It was these changes that gave rise to the WEIRD psychology that would coevolve with impersonal markets, occupational specialization, and free competition—laying the foundation for the modern world. Provocative and engaging in both its broad scope and its surprising details, The WEIRDest People in the World explores how culture, institutions, and psychology shape one another, and explains what this means for both our most personal sense of who we are as individuals and also the large-scale social, political, and economic forces that drive human history. Includes black-and-white illustrations.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Franz M]ller
  • Publisher : Wiley-VCH
  • Release : 2000-02-21
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 1056 pages

Download or read book Agrochemicals written by Franz M]ller and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2000-02-21 with total page 1056 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past the term "agrochemicals" has mainly been associated with plant protection, i.e. synthetic chemicals used to protect plants in the fields against various pests. This term was broadened by the introduction of e.g. plant growth regulators (plant hormones, closely related to herbicides) and juvenile hormones (related to insecticides). However, more recently the term "agrochemicals" has further broadened in the sense that it includes alI synthetic chemicals used in pre-planting, planting, growth, harvest- ing and storage of agricultural commodities, leading to the broader term "crop protec- tion products". In this current publication "Agrochemicals", fertilizers are also included, although they are traditionally thought not to falI under the term crop protection products. However, the maio goal to use crop protection products is to ensure the production ofhealthy plants and to increase their yields. In this context crop protection products alone could not achieve the mentioned goal without providing the plants with the necessary nutrients. Consequently, in a holistic approach of crop protection ferti- lizers are an integral part of agrochemicals.
