Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heinrich Heine's Life Told in His Own Words I once tried, my dear lady, to set forth as truly and honestly as possible the noteworthy events of my time, in so far as I was myself an Observer or victim of them. Of these notes, to which I had complacently given the title of Memoirs, I was obliged to destroy nearly half partly for painful family reasons, and partly through religious scruples. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Work, and Opinions of Heinrich Heine, Vol. 1 of 2 Heine's wit disported itself at times are notorious, and some passages of his writings could certainly have been printed nowhere but among a German public. Had the writer, however, gone to the extreme limit of admitting no passage of which his own taste did not approve, he would be conceived to have committed the error of mak ing Heine appear far too proper and perfect a person. He has, therefore, left standing, with some hesitation, a few passages among the mildest of those bearing the peculiar stamp of his sometimes inexcusable audacity, in order not altogether to withdraw from the book this characteristic of his genius. In somewhat the same way the writer has not cousi dered himself at liberty to omit Heine's severe and often very unjust criticisms on England and the English nation. His antipathy to England during the greater part of his life is a peculiar trait in his character, and one which an English biographer must put up with and account for as he best can. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Heinrich Heine Heine was born on the eve of the nineteenth century, and if we glance no further back than the decade pre ceding his birth, it will easily be seen at what a crucial period in European history he first saw the light. The long despotism which had held the greater part of the Continent in bondage was rapidly undergoing disintegra tion, not, as history has proved, to the triumph of demo cratic freedom, but more or less in that direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memoirs of Heinrich Heine: And Some Newly-Discovered Fragments of His Writings, With an Introductory Essay Having come into fiossession of the copyright, for the English language, of the recentty-disco'vered Memoirs of Heinrich Heine, the editor of this volume now publishes a translation of these auto biographical notes, together with an intro a'uctary essay on the life and works of the great German poet. The Memoirs, and other hitherto unpublished fragments of Heine's writings contained in this volume, will certainly be read with in terest and pleasure by the English and American public. The editor only regrets that the necessity of bringing out the English translation, as nearly as possible, simultaneously with the German and French editions, has precluded that care ful revision of the work to which he had intended to submit it before going to press. The imperfections arising from the omission alluded to, do not, however, afect the substance of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Family Life of Heinrich Heine: One Hundred and Twenty-Two Family Letters of the Poet Hitherto Unpublished From College Days to His Days to His Death It would be indeed strange if so modern a thinker and one who in some respects stands with the first in German literature should fail to remain a figure of uncommon picturesqueness and to challenge the interest of those who regard as antiquated his views of the struggle between the people and the privileged classes. It is not only as a literary star of the first bright ness, but as captain in the battle America has been fighting for more than one century, that Heine claims our sympathies. Book The Family Life of Heinrich Heine

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Family Life of Heinrich Heine: Illustrated by One Hundred Twenty-Two Hitherto Unpublished Letters Addressed by Him to Different Members of His Family It would really appear, in this our age of disillusion, as if there were nothing to be expected save the unexpected, and that no popular persuasion or conviction ever endures investigation. We have seen, from Niebuhr to Mommsen, that all old legends are old humbugs, that nobody ever said "Up, Guards, and at 'em!" nor "La vieille Garde meurt mais ne se rend jamais." And now we learn of Heinrich-Harry Heine, who has been the pet vaurien and bad boy, the witty and wicked incarnation of "flashing wit and blasting mockery," the "later Byron" and the "German Shelley" and the ideal and idol of all the enemies of Philistia, that he was - counter to the course of all his kind - at heart and at home one of the gentlest, most devoted lovers of quiet domestic life who ever lived. This has come to light by the publication of Heinrich Heine's Familien Leben, or "Family Life," by his nephew, Baron von Embden, a work consisting of 122 hitherto unpublished letters of the poet, chiefly to his mother and sister, from the age of twenty to his death. No one knows but that we may meet that same Philistine again, when he may wreak bitter vengeance on us for not politely replying, It is very fine weather. Nay, it may even happen, dear reader, that thou mayest, some fine day, come to sit by the Philistine aforesaid in the inn at Cassel, and at the table d'ho'te, even by his left side, when he is exactly the very man who has the dish with a jolly brown carp in it. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Heinrich Heine, Vol. 4 The Salon of Heine, as it was first published, consisted of papers on the annual exhibitions of pictures held in Paris during several years, and a portion of the Germany. In the last complete German edition of his works, this arrangement was changed, and all his letters on art and music included in one volume entitled I/wtctfia: Berichte fiber Politik, Kumt wud Volksleben (reports rela tive to Politics, Art, and Popular Life). This I have translated, restoring the title Salon, be cause it is now so generally known, that many might suppose that the series was imperfect unless that name could be found in it. And as the whole work is, though very discursive or varied, based on artistic, literary, or msthetic subjects, it will, I think, be generally admitted that the Salon is the most appropriate title for it. Book excerpt: A brilliant novel by the Norwegian master Dag Solstad Bjorn Hansen, a respectable town treasurer, has just turned fifty and is horrified by the thought that chance has ruled his life. Eighteen years ago he left his wife and their two-year-old son for his mistress, who persuaded him to start afresh in a small, provincial town and to devote himself to an amateur theater. In time that relationship also faded, and after four years of living alone Bjorn contemplates an extraordinary course of action that will change his life forever. He finds a fellow conspirator in Dr. Schiotz, who has a secret of his own and offers to help Bjorn carry his preposterous plan through to its logical conclusion. But the sudden reappearance of his son both fills Bjorn with new hope and complicates matters. The desire to gamble with his comfortable existence proves irresistible, however, taking him to Vilnius in Lithuania, where very soon he cannot tell whether he’s tangled up in a game or reality. Dag Solstad won the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature for Novel 11, Book 18, a concentrated uncompromising existential novel that puts on full display the author’s remarkable gifts and wit.

Book Heinrich Heine

Download or read book Heinrich Heine written by George Prochnik and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thematically rich, provocative, and lyrical study of one of Germany’s most important, world-famous, and imaginative writers Heinrich Heine (1797–1856) was a virtuoso German poet, satirist, and visionary humanist whose dynamic life story and strikingly original writing are ripe for rediscovery. In this vividly imagined exploration of Heine’s life and work, George Prochnik contextualizes Heine’s biography within the different revolutionary political, literary, and philosophical movements of his age. He also explores the insights Heine offers contemporary readers into issues of social justice, exile, and the role of art in nurturing a more equitable society. Heine wrote that in his youth he resembled “a large newspaper of which the upper half contained the present, each day with its news and debates, while in the lower half, in a succession of dreams, the poetic past was recorded fantastically like a series of feuilletons.” This book explores the many dualities of Heine’s nature, bringing to life a fully dimensional character while also casting into sharp relief the reasons his writing and personal story matter urgently today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Heinrich Conried There was much of the spontaneous in Hein rich Conried; he scintillated in a room full of people; he at once became the centre of attrac tion. But there was also much of the reserve in Heinrich Conried, and he hardly ever gave expression to his dreams. His was an elusive personality - now fascinating, then aggressively sarcastic and almost rude; now loquacious in anecdote, but almost taciturn where his inner self was concerned. His true friends knew that behind all this was the rare quality of the man. He often fell into long silences - and it is in the silence man really and truly and deeply lives, says Maeterlinck. While automobiling, Mr. Conried always sat next to the chauffeur, so that he need not talk if he did not wish. And he was equally as reserved in his correspondence.
