Book The Prayers of Jacob of Serugh

Download or read book The Prayers of Jacob of Serugh written by Mary Hansbury and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publications 177 Jacob of Serugh (451-521) is one of the great poets of the early Syriac tradition. His meditations focus us on the centrality of divine love as he understood it in the context of scripture. These reflections on the mysteries of salvation were prefaces to his homilies; as Sebastian Brock remarks in his Foreword, they ‘are beautiful little gems in their own right.’ In this book, Mary Hansbury presents a selection of the richest and most theologically profound of Jacob’s prayers. They introduce us to his warm pastoral concern for the spiritual and theological formation of the Christians in his care, which has remained lively and accessible down the ages.

Book The Wonders of Jesus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeremiah Burroughs
  • Publisher : Puritan Publications
  • Release : 2022-01-03
  • ISBN : 1626634246
  • Pages : 131 pages

Download or read book The Wonders of Jesus written by Jeremiah Burroughs and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more exciting prophecies concerning the Messiah is Isaiah 9:6, and it is very full and very pregnant in its meaning. Here we read the well-known nativity verse concerning the advent of the Messiah as a child born, (his blessed incarnation), and then the varied designations given to that child in his titles. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” There are seven designations in this verse, (including being, 1) born a child and 2) being a son), all of which could be turned in books themselves (and have been). To choose one title to speak on is very difficult. Jeremiah Burroughs, in this work, has chosen the term, “wonderful,” the third in the list, to consider. This work by Burroughs will help the Christian discern some of the sparks of Christ’s wonder in his various offices and works. Jesus is truly wonderful. From Isaiah 9:6 he will cover that Christ is the great wonder of the world. That Christ is wonderful in his offices of Prophet, Priest and King. That Christ is wonderful in his miracles. That Christ is wonderful in his death, resurrection, ascension and present intercession. That Christ is wonderful in the glory of the Father (in two parts) and then concludes with an application. This work is a great encouragement to have our eyes set on the wonders of Christ, and to contemplate daily the person and work of Christ, as God has given us his word to discern him and see him as wonderful.

Book The Commentaries of Origen and Jerome on St Paul s Epistle to the Ephesians

Download or read book The Commentaries of Origen and Jerome on St Paul s Epistle to the Ephesians written by Ronald E. Heine and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-12-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important study provides the first English translation of both the surviving fragments of Origen's Commentary on Ephesians and of the complete text of Jerome's Commentary on Ephesians. The two translations are placed parallel to one another where they treat the same texts in Ephesians thus showing Jerome's extensive dependence on Origen's commentary. By using collateral texts from other works of Origen, Jerome, and Rufinus, the author is able to show Jerome's dependence on Origen in numerous passages in his commentary where the Greek text of Origen's commentary is lost. The translation is accompanied by Heine's illuminating commentary and a substantial introduction sets the works in their historical context. The book makes a significant contribution not only to scholarship on Origen and Jerome, but also to the wider question of the interpretation of scripture in the early Christian centuries.
