La razón del escándalo que ha sacudido al mundo de los «heideggerianos» y a la filosofía continental es que los Cuadernos negros muestran a un filósofo consciente de sus decisiones políticas, atento a las vicisitudes históricas. Su compromiso político durante los años del nazismo no fue ni un accidente ni un error. Fue, antes bien, el resultado de una elección política coherente con el propio pensamiento. Si resultan turbadores es porque dinamitan los esquemas con que se había venido interpretando a Heidegger hasta el momento. Pero el fino análisis de Donatella Di Cesare también nos muestra cómo el anti-semitismo metafísico de Heidegger se inserta en una larga tradición occidental que abordó, no sin hostilidad y sin la complicidad por parte de los filósofos, la Judenfrage o cuestión judía, bien como un interrogante, porque el judaísmo parecía escapar a una definición, bien como un problema que había que «resolver».

Peter Trawny, el editor de estos cuadernos inéditos hasta 2014, ofrece por primera vez un análisis del proyecto filosófico de Heidegger a la luz de estas nuevas fuentes. Los primeros cuadernos, escritos durante los años de la guerra, ofrecen evidencia textual de que el antisemitismo de Heidegger forma parte de su pensamiento filosófico y político. Trawny subraya en ellos la recurrencia de expresiones antisemitas y la creencia en la existencia de una conspiración por parte de un "judaísmo mundial", que amenaza con destruir la identidad de otras naciones y culturas. Trawny traza el desarrollo de una "gran narrativa" de la "historia del ser" en las obras de Heidegger con la cultura griega y la germánica como protagonistas, y el "judaísmo mundial" como antagonista. En este sentido, el predicado "antisemita" aplicado a Heidegger resulta especialmente comprometido, pues en la mayoría de los casos se usa de una forma que implica una complicidad ideológica con el holocausto. Trawny se propone evaluar el pensamiento de Heiddegger en relación con el antisemitismo, pero intentando separarlo de la estigmatización en la que ha recaído después del holocausto. Según Trawny, los Cuadernos negros son el legado filosófico de Martin Heidegger y su publicación cambiará radicalmente la forma en que los lectores se acercarán a su pensamiento.

Book excerpt: The Other/Argentina looks at literature, film, and the visual arts to examine the threads of Jewishness that create patterns of meaning within the fabric of Argentine self-representation. A multiethnic yet deeply Roman Catholic country, Argentina has worked mightily to fashion itself as a modern nation. In so doing, it has grappled with the paradox of Jewishness, emblematic both of modernity and of the lingering traces of the premodern. By the same token, Jewishness is woven into, but also other to, Argentineity. Consequently, books, movies, and art that reflect on Jewishness play a significant role in shaping Argentina's cultural landscape. In the process they necessarily inscribe, and sometimes confound, norms of gender and sexuality. Just as Jewishness seeps into Argentina, Argentina's history, politics, and culture mark Jewishness and alter its meaning. The feminized body of the Jewish male, for example, is deeply rooted in Western tradition; but the stigmatized body of the Jewish prostitute and the lacerated body of the Jewish torture victim acquire particular significance in Argentina. Furthermore, Argentina's iconic Jewish figures include not only the peddler and the scholar, but also the Jewish gaucho and the urban mobster, troubling conventional readings of Jewish masculinity. As it searches for threads of Jewishness, richly imbued with the complexities of gender and sexuality, The Other/Argentina explores the patterns those threads weave, however overtly or subtly, into the fabric of Argentine national meaning, especially at such critical moments in Argentine history as the period of massive state-sponsored immigration, the rise of labor and anarchist movements, the Perón era, and the 1976–83 dictatorship. In arguing that Jewishness is an essential element of Argentina's self-fashioning as a modern nation, the book shifts the focus in Latin American Jewish studies from Jewish identity to the meaning of Jewishness for the nation. The recent publication of his Black Notebooks has reignited fierce debate on the subject. These thousand-odd pages of jotted observations profoundly challenge our image of the quiet philosopher's exile in the Black Forest, revealing the shocking extent of his anti-Semitism for the first time. For much of the philosophical community, the Black Notebooks have been either used to discredit Heidegger or seen as a bibliographical detail irrelevant to his thought. Yet, in this new book, renowned philosopher Donatella Di Cesare argues that Heidegger's "metaphysical anti-Semitism" was a central part of his philosophical project. Within the context of the Nuremberg race laws, Heidegger felt compelled to define Jewishness and its relationship to his concept of Being. Di Cesare shows that Heidegger saw the Jews as the agents of a modernity that had disfigured the spirit of the West.
