Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete and unabridged, this edition of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's 1821 classic offers a comprehensive view of the philosopher's influential system. In the Philosophy of Right, Hegel applies his most important concept--the dialectics--to law, rights, morality, the family, economics, and the state. The last of Hegel's works to be published in his lifetime, this volume combines moral and political philosophy to form a sociologic view dominated by the idea of the state. Hegel defines universal right as the synthesis between the thesis of an individual acting in accordance with the law and the occasional conflict of an antithetical desire to follow private convictions. The state, he declares, must permit individuals to satisfy both demands, thereby realizing social harmony and prosperity--the perfect synthesis. Further, Hegel renounces his formerly favorable assessment of the French Revolution and rejects the republican form of government, suggesting instead an idealized form of a constitutional monarchy, in which ultimate power rests with the sovereign.

This book was released on 1991-10-25 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a translation of a classic work of modern social and political thought, Elements of the Philosophy of Right. Hegel's last major published work, is an attempt to systematize ethical theory, natural right, the philosophy of law, political theory and the sociology of the modern state into the framework of Hegel's philosophy of history. Hegel's work has been interpreted in radically different ways, influencing many political movements from far right to far left, and is widely perceived as central to the communication tradition in modern ethical, social and political thought. This edition includes extensive editorial material informing the reader of the historical background of Hegel's text, and explaining his allusions to Roman law and other sources, making use of lecture materials which have only recently become available. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Philosophy of Right, Hegel expounds on the social, moral and legal philosophies the author conceived of - together, these provide the cornerstone of law for the modern state. Acting to summarise several key tenets of his philosophy, Hegel commences with a discussion of the notion of free will. Linking this process to the complex arrangements of property rights, family life, economics and other core aspects of a civilised society, the philosopher argues that free will is maximised when a person is able and willing to participate in all of these societal aspects. Successively, Hegel sets out the three spheres of right - each of which subsume the previous, being part of a larger overall mechanism referred to as the state. Hegel pointedly state that his is by no means a complete list - the history of human society, as viewed by Hegel, has seen a succession of corrections and refinements of the state's role in individual society. Translated by academic S. W. Hyde, this edition of Hegel's Philosophy of Right - also known by its complete title Elements of the Philosophy of Right - is authoritative, comprehensive and unabridged.

Book Hegel s Philosophy of Right

Download or read book Hegel s Philosophy of Right written by Dean Moyar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hegel’s Philosophy of Right was his last systematic work and the most complete statement of his mature views on ethical and political philosophy. The text explores the relationships between three distinct conceptions of human freedom: persons as possessing contract rights, subjects as reflective moral agents, and individuals as members of an ethical community. It strongly influenced the early Marx and debates over liberalism and communitarianism that arose in the latter half of the twentieth century. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Philosophy of Right, the 18 essays in this volume by contemporary scholars examine the nature and impact of Hegel's text. They examine a diverse array of topics, ranging from Hegel's account of rights, religious freedom, gender, the state, history, and naturalism to some hitherto relatively overlooked topics such as Hegel and Luther, art and nationality, and Hegel and the market. Each contribution also pays homage to the work of Terry Pinkard, who, as a foremost interpreter and scholar of Hegel’s thought, revived and reinvented the contemporary field of Hegel studies. Hegel's Philosophy of Right: Critical Perspectives on Freedom and History will be valuable reading for scholars of Hegel, nineteenth-century German philosophy, moral and political philosophy, and the history of political thought.

Book The Ethics of Democracy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lucio Cortella
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2015-09-08
  • ISBN : 1438457553
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book The Ethics of Democracy written by Lucio Cortella and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legal regulations and formal rules of democracy alone are not enough to hold a society together and govern its processes. Yet the irreducible ethical pluralism that characterizes contemporary society seems to make it impossible to impose a single system of values as a source of social cohesion and identity reference. In this book, Lucio Cortella argues that Hegel's theory of ethical life can provide such a grounding and makes the case through an analysis of Hegel's central political work, the Philosophy of Right. Although Hegel did not support democratic political ends and wrote in a historical and cultural context far removed from the current liberal-democratic scene, Cortella maintains that the Hegelian theory of ethical life, with its emphasis on securing a framework conducive to human freedom, nevertheless offers a convincing response to the problem of the ethical uprootedness of contemporary democracy.
