The volume takes into account developments in recent historical scholarship by broadening the notion of Modern French Philosophy in two ways. Book excerpt: This book presents studies of early-nineteenth century religious thought in Germany, France and Italy in so far as it reflected the influence of the Romantic movement. Romanticism may be notoriously difficult to define, but the cast of mind usually associated with it - manifest in philosophy, theology and social theory as well as in literature, music and the visual arts - is never hard to detect, even though the forms of its expression may vary widely. The authors considered, including Schleiermacher, Hegel, Schelling, Rosmini, Lamennais, Renan and Comte, all took religion seriously as voicing a fundamental impulse of the human spirit, even if the doctrines and institutions of Christianity had in their view to be either radically modified or else rejected outright. They were not satisfied with what they were apt to regard as the 'soulless' rationalism of the preceding century, as equally they feared the growing encroachment of natural science upon the freedom and indeed the self-identity of the human consciousness. A middle way, they sensed, had to be found - one grounded in man's moral and aeshetic experience - between the old orthodoxy and sterile unbelief.

Book excerpt: In this essay, Hegel attempted to show how Fichte's Science of Knowledge was an advance from the position of Kant in the Critique of Pure Reason, and how Schelling (and incidentally Hegel himself) had made a further advance from the position of Fichte. Hegel finds the idealism of Fichte too abstractly subjective and formalistic, and he tries to show how Schelling's philosophy of nature is the remedy for these weaknesses. But the most important philosophical content of the essay is probably to be found in his general introduction to these critical efforts where he deals with a number of problems about philosophical method in a way which is of general interest to philosophers, and not merely interesting to those who accept the Hegelian "dialectic method" which grew out of these first beginnings. Finally, the Difference essay is important in the development of "Nature-Philosophy" as a movement in the history of science.

By their writings and their political practices at the local, national, international levels these thinkers made major contributions to the founding of the new republican order in France. Drawing on a range of archival and published sources, the book sheds new light on classical republican thinking on such key issues as the interpretation of the 1789 Revolution, the definition of citizenship, the meaning of patriotism, the relationship between central government and local democracy, the value of individual liberty, and the place of education and religion in publica and private life. These five studies also break new ground in the conceptualization of nineteenth-century French intellectual history. The writings of these thinkers demonstrate the ideological pluralism and diversity of moderate French republican thought during this period. Positivism appears as an important and influential doctrine, but its hegemonic aspirations were successfully resisted by the abiding incluences of Saint-Simonism, socialism, doctrinaire liberalism, and neo-Kantianism. It emerges that the ideological potency of republican doctrine lay in its complexity and sophistication, as reflected in its capacity to effect a synthesis among these different approaches.
