Book excerpt: This volume presents forty-seven waulking songs recorded in South Uist, Barra, and the adjacent smaller islands between 1938 and 1965. Intensely evocative of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Highlands and Islands, these songs are one of the most interesting folk survivals of western Europe. Documenting a remarkable oral tradition of folkmusic, this work contains an analysis of the motifs found in the older waulking sounds, musical notes by Francis Collinson, and a chapter listing the songs in the three volumes.

Book The Old Songs of Skye

Download or read book The Old Songs of Skye written by Ethel Bassin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977. Frances Tolmie (1840-1926) was one of the foremost Gaelic folklore and folksong experts. This account of her life and work places her unique contribution to human song against a full personal, historical and cultural background. The book includes a selection of the songs she heard and wrote down, together with the part they played in her life and that of her circle and the larger community. Moving in a variety of circles, Frances Tolmie experienced the warm domesticity of an enlightened Skye manse, the cultural bustle of upper middle-class Edinburgh ‘entrepreneurs’, the romantic serious-mindedness of the first Cambridge women students, the sensitive nature-loving community round Ruskin at Coniston, and spent her later sociable years back in Scotland. This book, with its historical introduction by Flora MacLeod and musical introduction by Frank Howes along with Ethel Bassin's own detailed introduction, reflects her profound study of the song and folklore of her people, and describes how she recorded a precious part of British traditional culture, catching it alive and sharing it as truly as possible.

Book Songs of the Factory

Download or read book Songs of the Factory written by Marek Korczynski and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Songs of the Factory, Marek Korczynski examines the role that popular music plays in workers' culture on the factory floor. Reporting on his ethnographic fieldwork in a British factory that manufactures window blinds, Korczynski shows how workers make often-grueling assembly-line work tolerable by permeating their workday with pop music on the radio. The first ethnographic study of musical culture in an industrial workplace, Songs of the Factory draws on socio-musicology, cultural studies, and sociology of work, combining theoretical development, methodological innovation, and a vitality that brings the musical culture of the factory workers to life. Music, Korczynski argues, allows workers both to fulfill their social roles in a regimented industrial environment and to express a sense of resistance to this social order. The author highlights the extensive forms of informal collective resistance within this factory, and argues that the musically informed culture played a key role in sustaining these collective acts of resistance. As well as providing a rich picture of the musical culture and associated forms of resistance in the factory, Korczynski also puts forward new theoretical concepts that have currency in other workplaces and in other rationalized spheres of society.

Duanaire na Sracaire—or Songbook of the Pillagers—is the first anthology to bring together Scotland’s Gaelic poetry from c.600-1600 AD, a time when Scotland shared its rich culture with Ireland. It includes a huge range of diverse poetry: prayers and hymns of Iona, Fenian lays, praise poems and satires, courtly songs and lewd rants, songs of battle and death, incantations and love poems. All poems appear with facing-page translations which capture the spirit and beauty of the originals and are accompanied by detailed notes. A comprehensive introduction sets the context and analyses the role and functions of poetry in Gaelic society. This collection will appeal to poetry lovers, Gaelic speakers and those keen to explore a vital part of Scotland’s literary heritage.

Part I deals with the intellectual trends that contributed to the birth of the discipline in the period before World War II. Organized by national schools of scholarship, the influence of 19th-century anthropological theories on the new field of "comparative musicology" is described. In the second half of the book, regional experts provide detailed reviews by geographical areas of the current state of ethnomusicological research.

Download or read book Oral Poetry written by Ruth Finnegan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic study is an introduction to "oral poetry," a broad subject which Ruth Finnegan interprets as ranging from American folksongs, Eskimo lyrics, and modern popular songs to medieval oral literature, the heroic poems of Homer, and recent epic compositions in Asia or the Pacific. The book employs a broad comparative perspective and considers oral poetry from Africa, Asia, and Oceania as well as Europe and America. The results of Finnegan's vast research illuminate and suggest fresh conclusions to many current controversies: the nature of oral tradition and oral composition; the notion of a special oral style; possible connection between types of poetry and types of society; the differences between oral and written communication; and the role of poets in non-literate societies. Drawing on insights from anthropology and literary scholarship, Oral Poetry attempts to create a greater appreciation of the literary aspects of this fascinating form of poetry. Finnegan quotes extensively from a wide variety of sources, mainly in translation. The discussion is presented in non-technical language and will be of interest not only to sociologists and social anthropologists, but also to all those interested in comparative literature and in folk poetry from cultures around the world. The re-issue of this text, widely used in folklore, anthropology, and comparative literature courses, comes at an appropriate juncture in interdisciplinary scholarship, which is witnessing the breakdown of traditional disciplinary boundaries and an increase in the comparative study of oral poetry. For this volume Ruth Finnegan has provided a new foreword relating the text to more recent developments.

This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the first critical and theoretical study of women as the subjects of writing and as writers in Medieval and Early-Modern Scottish literature. The essays draw on a diverse range of literary, historical, cultural and religious sources in Scots, Gaelic and English to discover the complex ways in which 'Woman' was represented and by which women represented themselves as creative subjects. Woman and the Feminine in Medieval and Early Modern Scottish Writing brings to light previously unknown writing by women in the early modern period and offers as well new interpretations of early Scottish texts from feminist and theoretical perspectives.
