Most vehicle-associated metals (including copper) were found in the top 15 centimeters of soil. Lead, zinc, and copper concentrations were closely correlated - in contrast to concentrations of nickel and chromium, which were not associated with each other nor with the first three metals. Sequential extraction of the samples by a method similar to that of Tessier (to identify the potential environmental availability of the metals) found that somewhat less than half of the copper was extracted before the "residual" extraction. Most of the extracted copper was in the "organically bound" and "carbonate bound" fractions. Separately, an "exchangeable" fraction was measured by suspending roadway soil samples overnight in an ammonium acetate solution; this extracted about 7% of the copper.

For centuries, urbanisation has caused relatively low level soil conta- nation mainly by various wastes. However, from the time of the Industrial Revolution onwards, both the scale of urban development and the degree of soil contamination rapidly increased and involved an ever widening spectrum of c- taminants. With constraints on the supply of land for new urban development in many countries, it is becoming increasingly necessary to re-use previously dev- oped (brownfield) sites and to deal with their accompanying suites of contaminants. It is therefore essential to fully understand the diversity and properties of urban soils, to assess the possible risks from the contaminants they contain and devise ways of cleaning up sites and/or minimizing hazards. The author, Helmut Meuser, is Professor of Soil Protection and Soil Clean-up at the University of Applied Sciences, Osnabrück and is one of Europe’s foremost experts on contamination from technogenic materials in urban soils. He has many years’ experience of research in Berlin, Essen, Osnabrück, other regions of Germany, and several other countries.

Book excerpt: In the context of urban diffuse pollution a suburban road acts as a potential source of toxic pollutants among which heavy metals are very common, are found at elevated concentrations and are generally persistent. With a lack of detailed understanding of metal emission patterns on suburban roads, a detailed study is therefore essential for gaining an improved understanding to plug the knowledge gap in terms of urban diffuse pollution management. The present understanding of pollutant build-up and wash-off processes on road surfaces elucidates that these processes are highly site specific and are hard to generalise in certain aspects. Therefore, this study aimed to characterise heavy metal emissions and associated pollution levels at several road sites on the Riccarton Campus road network using road sediment collected during dry and wet weather periods. The heavy metal concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, are believed to be greatly toxic and are highly abundant in road traffic environments, were determined by strong nitric acid digestion and atomic absorption spectrometry. The study revealed that the pollutant build-up and wash-off processes were site specific and so also were the derived local build-up and wash-off parameters, as expected. However, these derived parameters were very different from those used in common urban drainage models suggesting that the default values are (significantly) inappropriate for the studied road network. The quantification of heavy metals in road sediments displayed significantly higher concentrations than local background concentrations. Their concentrations between weather types were found in the order of runoff, snow and dry road sediment, and also varied between sampling sites according to site-specific attributes, such as road lay-out inured traffic movement pattern, road surface condition and presence of road paint rather than due to traffic volume alone. The concentrations of all metals except Pb were significantly higher in finer sediment sizes than in larger sediment sizes. Correlation analyses revealed a similar pattern showing a greater number of statistically significant associations between metals in finer sediment sizes. An assessment of heavy metal contamination indicated that road sediment may likely pose a moderate to considerable level of ecological risk, if transported to the nearby water environment in the study area. The assimilation of the knowledge gained in this study should help to improve current understanding of environmental pollution from suburban roads and to provide better guidance for selecting appropriate control measures under the framework of sustainable urban drainage systems.

HUES is run by Chalmers University of Technology within the Alliance for Global Sustainability (The AGS). HUES was initiated by Professor Ron Hamilton at Middlesex Polytechnic (now University) in the early 1980s and had the title "Highway Pollution". The initial aim was to measure and assess challenges in highway pollution, with a strong emphasis on urban photochemical smog, ozone formation and particle release. After the first symposium, the emphasis on air pollution issues continued through to Munich in 1989 where diesel particulate issues and the relevance to health through measurements of PM10 emerged. The focus on air quality issues was also strengthened. In parallel, the symposium started to receive an increasing number of scientific contributions from the area of urban run off, indeed to the extent that the title of the symposium was changed to "Highway and Urban Pollution". Since then the importance of science in support of policy became increasingly important as a key aspect of the symposium. 9HUES was held at TRANSyT- Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain to provide a professional and scientific forum on global examples of the science required to support pathways to a positive and sustainable future in the highway and urban environment.

Toledo, Ohio is an urban setting that has been altered through heavy industry and transportation dating back to the 1800s. Heavy metal contamination in soil has been shown to cause serious health effects in humans, such as brain damage, birth defects, cancer, and even death.A total of 137 Toledo soil samples were collected in collaboration with local Toledo schools, the Manos Community Garden, and a previous study completed by Stewart et al (2014). Stewart's study samples and the local Toledo schools' soil samples were collected by K-12 students through a hands-on citizen science project. The samples were analyzed to determine the concentrations of a series of heavy metals, including arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and zinc. The results revealed multiple samples with elevated levels of all six focus metals greater than the Ohio EPA's soil background levels of the region. Two of these elements, arsenic and lead, had concentrations higher than the USEPA screening level for soils of this region in 73% and 7% of samples, respectively. Locations with elevated heavy metals concentrations in soils were mostly residential yards with older houses and within areas of high transportation. Therefore, the elevated levels of heavy metals were likely deposited from a legacy of human activities. Heavy metal predictive concentration maps of the Toledo, Ohio area were created to show possible areas of concern. The predictive maps showed a higher concentration of most elements in the Old West End area of Toledo. The findings were presented to the collaborating schools and in public forums to educate citizens about elevated heavy metal soil contamination in their area. They were given possible reasons for the contamination, explaining the harmful side effects of human activities on the soils. The health risks associated with the contamination were presented along with how to prevent health issues and how to take precautions around heavy metals.
