Download or read book Heavy Ion Interactions Around the Coulomb Barrier written by Cosimo Signorini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear reactions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier have found much interest since unexpectedly large cross sections of fusion for heavy ions were discovered around 1980. This book covers the more important experimental and theoretical aspects such as sub-barrier fusion, sub- and near-barrier transfer, couplings of various reaction channels, neck-formation, the threshold anomaly, spin distributions and fusion of polarized ions. The symposium also included a session devoted to mass spectrometry for fast reaction products.

Book excerpt: Combining elastic and inelastic processes with transfer reactions, this two-part volume explores how these events affect heavy ion collisions. Special attention is given to processes involving the transfer of two nucleons, which are specific for probing pairing correlations in nuclei. This novel treatment provides, together with the description of surface vibration and rotations, a unified picture of heavy ion reactions in terms of the elementary modes of nuclear excitation. Heavy Ion Reactions is essential reading for beginning graduate students as well as experienced researchers.

Book Heavy ion Reactions Near the Coulomb Barrier

Book excerpt: Fusion reactions between different Kr and Ni isotopes were measured recently at ATLAS. We performed coupled-channels calculations and made comparisons to the measurements. Such calculations become increasingly difficult for heavy, soft nuclei due to strong couplings and the importance of higher-order, multi-step processes. The calculations were made possible by adopting the so-called rotating frame approximation, and they included one- and two-phonon excitations of the low-lying 2 and 3− states in both the projectile and the target. These calculations reproduced quite accurately the measured fusion cross sections for a beam of 86Kr. Some discrepancies remain for the much softer 78Kr nucleus; the calculations were clearly much more sensitive to higher-order processes in this case. In particular, it was important to implement the correct coupling strength and excitation energy for the soft, one- to two-phonon quadrupole transition in 78Kr, which differs significantly from the vibrational limit. This work was performed in collaboration with the experimentalists and was submitted for publication.

Book The Response of Nuclei under Extreme Conditions

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a new field of nuclear research has been opened through the possibility of studying nuclei wi\h very large values of angular momentum, temperature, pressure and number of particles. This development has been closely associated with heavy ion reactions, since collisions between two heavy nuclei are especially effective in producing metastable compound systems with large angular momentum, and in transferring energy which is distributed over the whole nuclear volume. Under the strain of temperature and of the Coriolis and centrifugal forces, the nucleus displays structural changes which can be interpreted in terms of pairing and shape phase transit ions. This was the subject of the lectures of J. D. Garrett, P. J. Twin and S. Levit. While the rotational motion is, at zero temperature un damped, the width of giant resonances indicate that the nucleus only oscillates through few periods before the motion is damp ed by particle decay, and through coupling to the compound nucleus. Temperature and angular momentum influence in an im portant way the properties of both giant resonances and rotatio nal motion. These subjects were developed by K. Snover, and by P. F. Bortignon and R. A. Broglia, as well as by A. Bracco, A. Dellafiore and F. Matera.

Book Treatise on Heavy Ion Science

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 75 years the stopping of energetic ions in matter has been a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The theoretical treatment of the stopping of ions in matter is largely due to the work of Bohr, 1-3 Bethe,4-6 Bloch,7. s and Lindhard,9-12 and it has been reviewed by Bohr,3 Fano,13 17 20 Jackson,14 Sigmund,15 Ahlen,16 and Ziegler et al. - Soon after the discovery of energetic particle emission from radioactive materials, there was interest in how these corpuscles were slowed down in traversing matter. In 1900, Marie Curie stated 21 the hypothesis that Hies rayons alpha sont des projectiles materiels susceptibles de perdre de leur vitesse en travers ant la matiere." Early attempts to evaluate this were incon clusive for there was not yet an accurate proposed model of the atom. Enough experimental evidence was collected in the next decade to make stopping power theory one of the central concerns of those attempting to develop an atomic model. J.J. Thomson, director of the prestigious Cavendish Laboratory, and Niels Bohr, a fresh postdoctoral scientist at Rutherford's Manchester Laboratory, both published almost simultaneously22. 23 an analysis of the stopping of charged particles by matter, and each contained many of their divergent ideas on the model of an atom. Thomson ignored in his paper the Rutherford alpha-particle scattering 24 experiment of a year before. But the nuclear atom with a heavy positively 25 charged core was the basis of Bohr's ideas.
