And does he trust these three invaders enough to tell them? Erin feels a sisterly responsibility for Heaven Eyes, Mouse longs to belong anywhere and anyhow, but January thinks Grampa's a murderer. Whatever happens, all three have a part to play. . . A stunning novel from the author of the modern children's classic Skellig - winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children's Book Award. Book excerpt: "A history of Chinese law and justice from the imperial era to the post-Mao era, the book addresses the evolution and function of law codes and judicial practices in China's long history, and examines the transition from traditional laws and practices to their modern counterparts in the twentieth century and beyond. From the ancient times to the twenty-first century, there has been an enduring expectation or hope among the Chinese people that justice should and will be done in society, which is expressed in a popular Chinese saying, "Heaven has eyes." To the Chinese mind in the imperial era, justice was, and was to be achieved as, an alignment of Heavenly reason, state law, and human relations. Such a conception did not change until the turn of the twentieth century when Western-derived notions--natural rights, legal equality, the rule of law, judicial independence, and due process--came to replace the Confucian moral code of right and wrong, which was a fundamental shift in philosophical and moral principles that informed law and justice. The legal-judicial reform agendas since the beginning of the twentieth century (still ongoing today) stemmed from this change in the Chinese moral and legal thinking, but to materialize the said principles in everyday practices is a very different order of things that is much more difficult to accomplish, hence all the legal dramas including tragedies in the past one century or so. The book will lay out how and why that is the case"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green’s Secret Histories fantasy adventure series featuring supernatural super-agent Eddie Drood continues. Eddie Drood here...well, not quite. Being a member of a secret-yet-legendary family of evil-battlers who have been shielding people from the darkest entities on Earth for ages can take its toll. So lately, I’ve been relaxing. Regrouping. Looking at things from a place of peace and quiet. After all, being dead does have its perks. Lucky for me my lovely witch Molly Metcalfe is able to pull me back to the mortal plane just in time for another disaster to befall the Drood clan and the world in general. It appears there is a Satanist conspiracy in the making. And I don’t mean your typical wear-black-eyeliner, mope-around-the-high-school, rebelling-against-daddy devil devotees. These Satanists are incredibly for real, extremely devoted to their dark lord, and dead serious about breaking down the gates of Hell to unleash...well, Hell. And the key to this is something called the “Great Sacrifice,” a horrific occurrence the likes of which humanity has never conceived—and will never survive. That is, unless an unlikely guardian angel leaps into the fray. Dammit...where did I put my wings and halo...?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about what a soldier goes through while in combat in the Middle East and returning home having to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While on the battlefield, dealing with firefights, being shot at, and having to hear the battle cries of wounded fellow soldiers all the while trying to save yourself are very traumatic experiences. Suppressing all of these horrific ordeals creates PTSD. We will bring to light the effects of PTSD and how veterans are returning home and finding it very difficult to function in civilian life. Through personal interviews with veterans, we have had several of them advise us that there is no atheist in a foxhole; you are praying to a higher power to help you through your ordeal. Some veterans returning home don't even realize they have PTSD until something happens that triggers a relapse. Something as simple as a sudden flash of light or a transformer blowing up may trigger a relapse of PTSD; and they may become very despondent or, even worse, very angry and become violent. Every case of PTSD is different. Although it may be created from the same traumatic experiences, the outcome from each veteran may be different. Most veterans try to conceal it or deal with it themselves, but the majority of them need assistance through other means when medications don't work. This book parallels true events that we as a private investigation agency have at one time or another encountered, even the unmentionable: human trafficking. Today's numbers show that we have the most slaves ever in the history of the world. There's danger everywhere, even by just taking a picture. We have the answer: read the book. You will see where to go and what to do when you're unable to talk to family or close friends concerning this issue.

Only in his dreams has Burke Grisham, the once dissolute Earl of Thornwald, seen a lady as exquisite as Catherine Snow. Now, standing before him at last is the mysterious beauty whose life he has glimpsed in strange visions-whose voice called him back from death and the shimmering radiance beyond, on the bloody field of Waterloo. Yet now, even as she resists his strange connection to her mind, she years for him to conquer her heart. But does this infamous rake think her his next plaything? Or is Burke truly sent, as he vows, to save Catherine from a danger only he can see-and sweep her up in a love born of eternal light?

Book excerpt: “A raw, tender portrait of adolescent misery, reminiscent of Elena Ferrante’s fiction.” —NPR From the bestselling author of Breasts and Eggs, a sharp and illuminating novel about the impact of violence and the power of solidarity. Tormented by his peers because of his lazy eye, Kawakami’s protagonist suffers in silence. His only respite comes thanks to his friendship with a girl who is also the victim of relentless teasing. But what is the nature of a friendship if your shared bond is terror? Unflinching yet tender, intimate and multi-layered, Heaven is yet another dazzling testament to Kawakami’s uncontainable talent. “An argument in favor of meaning, of beauty, of life.” —The New York Times Book Review “If you enjoyed Mieko Kawakami’s brilliant Breasts and Eggs, you’re certain to be astonished by her latest novel exploring violence and bullying with fierce, feminist and damning candor.” —Ms. Magazine “This is the real magic of Heaven, which shows us how to think about morality as an ongoing, dramatic activity. It can be maddening and ruinous and isolating. But it can also be shared, enlivened . . . and momentarily redeemed through unheroic acts of solidarity.” —The New Yorker “Quietly devastating.” —TIME Magazine “Keen psychological insight, brilliant sensitivity, and compassionate understanding.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Raw and eloquent. . . . An unexpected classic.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review “An incredible literary talent.” —Booklist, starred review “Kawakami writes with jagged, visceral beauty.” —Oprah Daily “Kawakami never lets us settle comfortably, which is a testament to her storytelling power.” —Los Angeles Review of Books “One of Japan’s brightest stars.” —Japan Times
