Book Heat Treatment of Metastable Beta Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Heat Treatment of Metastable Beta Titanium Alloys written by Nageswara Rao Muktinutalapati and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat treatment of metastable beta titanium alloys involves essentially two steps,Äîsolution treatment in beta or alpha+beta phase field and aging at appropriate lower temperatures. High strength in beta titanium alloys can be developed via solution treatment followed by aging by precipitating fine alpha (Œ±) particles in a beta (Œ≤) matrix. Volume fraction and morphology of Œ± determine the strength whereas ductility is dependent on the Œ≤ grain size. Solution treatment in (Œ±¬†+¬†Œ≤) range can give rise to a better combination of mechanical properties, compared to solution treatment in the Œ≤ range. However, aging at some temperatures may lead to a low/nil-ductility situation and this has to be taken into account while designing the aging step. Heating rate to aging temperature also has a significant effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties obtained after aging. In addition to Œ±, formation of intermediate phases such as omega, beta prime during decomposition of beta phase has been a subject of detailed studies. In addition to covering these issues, the review pays special attention to heat treatment of beta titanium alloys for biomedical applications, in view of the growing interest this class of alloys have been receiving.

Book Variations in Tensile Behavior of a High Strength Titanium Alloy Fabricated and Heat Treated in a Heavy Section

Download or read book Variations in Tensile Behavior of a High Strength Titanium Alloy Fabricated and Heat Treated in a Heavy Section written by RE. Pasternak and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some titanium alloys have the advantage of possessing the capability of hardening to high strength levels through the thickness of heavy sections. Such an alloy is the metastable beta titanium alloy Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al (Ti-8823). This study is concerned with the tensile property variation exhibited by Ti-8823 after its fabrication and heat treatment in heavy section. Information on the tensile behavior was obtained from tension specimens taken from three through-the-thickness locations; outside diameter, midwall, and inside diameter. Values for the following parameters were obtained at each location: yield strength (0.1 and 0.2 percent offset), tensile strength, reduction in area, elongation, and modulus of elasticity. From these data, the variation (standard deviation) for each parameter was determined. Variations in tensile properties as well as hardness measurements of Ti-8823 were compared to those experienced with heavy-section steel gun tube forgings and another titanium alloy in heavy section, namely the alpha/beta Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn alloy.

Book Advanced Processes for High Strength Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Advanced Processes for High Strength Titanium Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In first part of this project, double Electron Beam Melting (EBM) was investigated for melting of high-strength alpha + beta and beta titanium alloys. The following advantages, as compared to Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR), are expected: - full dissolution of LDl due to higher temperature and longer times in melt condition; - essential elimination of HDl by means of intermediate bath' application; - employment of cheaper initial materials, such as sponge blocks; - improved chemical homogeneity of ingots due to introducing alloying elements directly into a melting zone; * improved microstructure due to better controlled solidification of liquid metal. The second part of the project is aimed at the development of a novel approach in processing of beta alloys, which comprises cold or warm deformation and rapid heat treatment. An attractive advantage of beta-titanium alloys consists in a high plasticity in solid-solution metastable beta phase condition, which allows rolling of rods, sheets, foils, and other products at ambient temperature or in low (alpha + beta) region. Application of rapid heating as the final solid solutionizing treatment is supposed to allow formation of extremely fine beta-grain microstructure ensuring a sufficient ductility even in a high-strength condition. Detailed investigations of phase and microstructural evolution at continuous heating of solid solution and subsequently cold or warm rolled beta phase will be performed in order to establish the practical application of novel RHT technology.

Book An Evaluation of Some High Strength Titanium Alloys Processed in Heavy Sections

Download or read book An Evaluation of Some High Strength Titanium Alloys Processed in Heavy Sections written by Richard Chait and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilization of advanced titanium alloys in heavy sections depends to a large extent on the ability to fabricate these sections. This study is concerned with the high strength alpha-beta alloy Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn (Ti-662) and the metastable beta alloy ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al (Ti-8823) and their fabrication in large sections. The extrusion technique utilized to achieve better than a 6:1 reduction ratio for a heavy section cylindrical hollow of this alloy is described. Following extrusion, the alloys were given one of two heat treatments: for the Ti-662 the solutionize and age or solutionize and overage heat treatments; for the Ti-8823 alloy the commonly suggested solutionize and age heat treatment or a direct age without the intermediate solutionized. The influence of these heat treatments is given in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area, and fracture toughness).
