Book Heat Treatment and Interface Effects on the Mechanical Behavior of SiC Particle Reinforced Aluminium Matrix Composites

Download or read book Heat Treatment and Interface Effects on the Mechanical Behavior of SiC Particle Reinforced Aluminium Matrix Composites written by D. P. Myriounis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface plays a vital role in composites. Strengthening behavior of SiC-particle reinforced aluminium matrix composites relies on load transfer behavior across the interface, whereas toughness is influenced by crack deflection at the boundary between matrix and reinforcement and ductility is affected by relaxation of peak stresses near the interface. In general, metal matrix composites often behave asymmetrically in tension and in compression and have higher ultimate tensile strength, yet lower proportional limits, than monolithic alloys. Such behavior of composites lies with the factors governing matrix plasticity, which can be divided into two areas: those affecting the stress rate of the matrix, and those which alter the flow properties of the matrix through changes in microstructure induced by inclusion of the reinforcement. This work focuses on the characterization of the mechanical response of the interface to stresses arising from an applied load in SiC-particle reinforced aluminium matrix composites. The composites have been studied in the as-received (T1) and in the T6 and modified T6 (HT1) conditions. In the nonequilibrium heat treatment processing of the composites, nonequilibrium segregation arises due to imbalances in point defect concentrations set up around interfaces. Mechanical properties, including microhardness and stress-strain behavior, of aluminum matrix composites containing various percentages of SiC particulate reinforcement have been investigated. The elastic modulus, the yield/tensile strengths, and ductility of the composites were controlled primarily by the volume percentage of SiC reinforcement, the temper condition, and the precipitation hardening.

Book The Role of the Interface on the Mechanical Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book The Role of the Interface on the Mechanical Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites written by A. Lawley and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microstructural stability and mechanical behavior of the in-situ Co, Cr-(Cr, Co)7C3 composite and filamentary Ni-Mo and nichrome-tungsten composites have been characterized as a function of isothermal exposure and various regimes of thermal cycling. Properties examined were strength, toughness and resistance to fatigue crack propagation. Correlations were developed between microstructural change accompanying each mode of heat-treatment and the above properties. This provided the basis for the development of models for plastic flow and crack initiation/propagation in the two types of composite material which can account for the observed effect(s) of the heat-treatment imposed. Book The effect of post welded heat treatment on mechanical properties and microstructure of friction stir welded Al 6063

Download or read book The effect of post welded heat treatment on mechanical properties and microstructure of friction stir welded Al 6063 written by Jasveer Singh and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust. Aluminium is remarkable for the metal's low density and for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and are important in other areas of transportation and structural materials Welding plays a crucial role or say as a back bone of manufacturing industry to join the components. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new joining process that has been demonstrated in a variety of metals such as steel, titanium, lead, copper and aluminium. The unique properties of friction stir welds make possible some completely new structural designs with significant impact to ship design and construction. Friction stir welding is especially advantageous for joining aluminium and has been exploited commercially around the world in several industries. In the present work the effects of welding speed have been investigated on the microstructural and mechanical properties of friction stir welded aluminium alloy 6063. FSW was carried out at rotational speed of 1300 rpm (constant) and transverse speeds of 35, 50 and 65 mm/min. Mechanical performance has been investigated in terms of hardness, wear resistance and tensile strength. To study the effect of post welding heat treatment on properties of friction stir welded joint, the artificial ageing was carried out at 1600 C for a soaking period of 20 hours in the muffle furnace. The study revealed that friction stir welded joint prepared at welding speed of 35 mm/min exhibited better tensile strength, hardness and wear resistance. Better mechanical properties of the joint prepared at welding speed of 35 mm/min may be attributed due to fine, homogeneous and equaxed grain structure of stir zone. Post welding heat treatment of friction stir welded joint improved the wear resistance and microhardness of the joint. However tensile properties deteriorated with the post welding heat treatment of joint.

Book Thermal Effects on the Mechanical Properties of SiC Fiber Reinforced Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride Matrix SiC RBSN Composites

Download or read book Thermal Effects on the Mechanical Properties of SiC Fiber Reinforced Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride Matrix SiC RBSN Composites written by R. T. Bhatt and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elevated temperature four-point flexural strength and the room temperature tensile and flexural strength properties after thermal shock were measured for ceramic composites consisting of 30 vol % uniaxially aligned 142 microns diameter SiC fibers in a reaction bonded Si3N4 matrix. The elevated temperature strengths were measured after 15 min of exposure in air at temperatures to 1400 C. The thermal shock treatment was accomplished by heating the composite in air for 15 min at temperatures to 1200 C and then quenching in water at 25 C. The results indicate no significant loss in strength properties either at temperature or after thermal shock when compared with the strength data for composites in the as-fabricated condition.
