Book A Visual Technique for Determining Qualitative Aerodynamic Heating Rates on Complex Configurations

Download or read book A Visual Technique for Determining Qualitative Aerodynamic Heating Rates on Complex Configurations written by P. Calvin Stainback and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted at a test-section Mach number of 4.95 and a stagnation temperature of 400 F to evaluate a visual technique for obtaining qualitative aerodynamic heat-transfer data on complex configurations. This technique utilized a temperature-sensetive paint indicated that this technique was satisfactory for determining qualitative heat-transfer rates on various bodies, some of which exhibited complex flow patterns. The results obtained have been found useful to guide the instrumentation of quantitative heat-transfer models, to supplement quantitative heat-transfer measurements, and to make preliminary heat-transfer studies for new configurations.

Book Use of Fusible Temperature Indicators for Obtaining Quantitative Aerodynamic Heat transfer Data

Download or read book Use of Fusible Temperature Indicators for Obtaining Quantitative Aerodynamic Heat transfer Data written by Robert A. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the methods used for obtaining quantitative aerodynamic heat-transfer data by means of temperature-sensitive coatings are described and discussed. A method whereby data can be obtained on arbitrary shapes without the use of a reference body has been developed. In this method, the heat-transfer coefficients depend only upon the thermal properties of the model material and the time required for a visible phase change of a fusible temperature indicator which is applied to the model as a thin surface coating. The phase change is recorded by motion-picture photography, and charts are given which relate the time required for the phase change to occur to the heat-transfer coefficient. Data obtained by this method are compared with aerodynamic theory and with data obtained by the conventional thermocouple-calorimeter technique. Several configurations were tested in the Langley Mach 8 variable-density tunnel. The results indicate that this method can be very useful and that accurate data can be obtained.

Book Facing the Heat Barrier

Download or read book Facing the Heat Barrier written by T.A. Heppenheimer and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume from The NASA History Series presents an overview of the science of hypersonics, the study of flight at speeds at which the physics of flows is dominated by aerodynamic heating. The survey begins during the years immediately following World War II, with the first steps in hypersonic research: the development of missile nose cones and the X-15; the earliest concepts of hypersonic propulsion; and the origin of the scramjet engine. Next, it addresses the re-entry problem, which came to the forefront during the mid-1950s, showing how work in this area supported the manned space program and contributed to the development of the orbital shuttle. Subsequent chapters explore the fading of scramjet studies and the rise of the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program of 1985–95, which sought to lay groundwork for single-stage vehicles. The program's ultimate shortcomings — in terms of aerodynamics, propulsion, and materials — are discussed, and the book concludes with a look at hypersonics in the post-NASP era, including the development of the X-33 and X-34 launch vehicles, further uses for scramjets, and advances in fluid mechanics. Clearly, ongoing research in hypersonics has yet to reach its full potential, and readers with an interest in aeronautics and astronautics will find this book a fascinating exploration of the field's history and future.

Book Preliminary Investigation of the Effects of Heat Transfer on Boundary layer Transition on a Parabolic Body of Revolution NACA RM 10 at a Mach Number of 1 61

Download or read book Preliminary Investigation of the Effects of Heat Transfer on Boundary layer Transition on a Parabolic Body of Revolution NACA RM 10 at a Mach Number of 1 61 written by K. R. Czarnecki and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary investigation has been made of the effects of heat transfer on boundary-layer transition on a body of revolution at a Mach number of 1.61 and over a Reynolds number range of 7,000,000 to 20,000,000, based on body length. The body had a parabolic-arc profile, blunt-base, and a fineness ratio of 12.2 (NACA RM-10). The results indicated that, by cooling the model an average of about 50 degrees F, the Reynolds number for which laminar boundary-layer flow could be maintained over the entire length of the body was increased from the value of 11,500,000 without cooling to over 20,000,000, the limit of the present tests. Heatig the model an average of about 12 degrees F on the other hand decreased the transition Reynolds number from 11,500,000 to about 8,000,000. These effects of heat transfer on transition were considerably larger than previously found in similar investigations in other wind tunnels. It appears that, if the boundary-layer transition Reynolds number for zero heat transfer is large, as in the present experiments, then the sensitivity of transition to heating or cooling is high; if the zero-heat-transfer transition Reynolds number is low, then transition is relatively insensitive to heat-transfer effects.

Book Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion

Download or read book Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion written by Ahmed F. El-Sayed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive basics-to-advanced course in an aero-thermal science vital to the design of engines for either type of craft. The text classifies engines powering aircraft and single/multi-stage rockets, and derives performance parameters for both from basic aerodynamics and thermodynamics laws. Each type of engine is analyzed for optimum performance goals, and mission-appropriate engines selection is explained. Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion provides information about and analyses of: thermodynamic cycles of shaft engines (piston, turboprop, turboshaft and propfan); jet engines (pulsejet, pulse detonation engine, ramjet, scramjet, turbojet and turbofan); chemical and non-chemical rocket engines; conceptual design of modular rocket engines (combustor, nozzle and turbopumps); and conceptual design of different modules of aero-engines in their design and off-design state. Aimed at graduate and final-year undergraduate students, this textbook provides a thorough grounding in the history and classification of both aircraft and rocket engines, important design features of all the engines detailed, and particular consideration of special aircraft such as unmanned aerial and short/vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. End-of-chapter exercises make this a valuable student resource, and the provision of a downloadable solutions manual will be of further benefit for course instructors.
