Continued advances in textile processing technology, the growth of manufactured nonwovens and the application of nanotechnology have resulted in a wealth of research in order to characterise the behaviour of these materials. Thermal and moisture transport in fibrous materials provides a comprehensive guide of the technological developments and scientific understanding in this area. The first section summarises the structure, geometry and stereology of fibrous materials. The fundamentals of wetting and its dynamics are also discussed. Part two analyses thermal and liquid interactions in textiles and offers insights into the thermodynamic behaviour of moisture as well as heat and moisture coupling. The book concludes with chapters on the human thermoregulatory system, interfacing between fibrous materials and the human body and innovative computer modelling simulations.Thermal and moisture transport in fibrous materials is an essential reference for all those involved in the textile industry, especially those concerned with the design and manufacture of technical textiles and protective clothing. - Summarises the structure, geometry and stereology of fibrous materials - Discusses the fundamentals of wetting and its dynamics - Analyses thermal and liquid interactions in textiles

Book Analysis of Effective Thermal Conductivity of Fibrous Materials

Download or read book Analysis of Effective Thermal Conductivity of Fibrous Materials written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to gain a better understanding of the various mechanisms of heat transfer through fibrous materials and to gain insight into how fill-gas pressure influences the effective thermal conductivity. By way of first principles and some empiricism, two mathematical models are constructed to correlate experimental data. The data are obtained from a test series measuring the effective thermal conductivity of Nomex using a two-sided guarded hot-plate heater apparatus. Tests are conducted for certain mean temperatures and fill-gases over a range of pressures varying from vacuum to atmospheric conditions. The models are then evaluated to determine their effectiveness in representing the effective thermal conductivity of a fibrous material. The models presented herein predict the effective thermal conductivity of Nomex extremely well. Since the influence of gas conduction is determined to be the most influential component in predicting the effective thermal conductivity of a fibrous material, an improved representation of gas conduction is developed. Finally, some recommendations for extension to other random-oriented fiber materials are made concerning the usefulness of each model depending on their advantages and disadvantages. Book Conduction Heat Transfer Analysis in Composite Materials

Download or read book Conduction Heat Transfer Analysis in Composite Materials written by Lit S. Han and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With anticipated increased use of composite materials in aerospace structures and other applications, thermal properties of composites are needed as essential design information. In the past there was only scanty amount of research effort in thermal analysis of composites, as most of the work has been concerned with their mechanical properties. This report contains results from a rigorous analysis to determine steady-state effective thermal conductivities of fiber-matrix type of composites. The fibers bundled into twos are considered dispersed in a matrix of resin. The dispersion patterns of configurations considered are: (1) uni-directional fibers in a matrix, as the simplest geometry, and (2) 0.90 configuration in which two uni-directional tapes are overlaid at 90 degrees to each other. The method of analysis is to solve a two-region steady-state heat conduction equation either analytically or numerically. The analysis assumes a prior knowledge of the geometry of a composite and the constituents thermal conductivities.

Book Heat Transfer and Flammability of Fibrous Materials

Download or read book Heat Transfer and Flammability of Fibrous Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for nonflammable fibrous materials intended for incorporation into life support systems for aircrew protection from fires along with state-of-the-art of such materials is discussed. Fabrics are evaluated on the basis of heat transmission from direct flame contact as well as for flammability. Five characteristics have been found to affect fabric heat transfer: fiber thermal stability, thickness, weave or knit pattern, air permeability and bulk density. PBI is the only fiber in woven form that has provided the combined thermal and comfort characteristics required for use in flight suits.

Book Transient Heat Flow Along Uni directional Fibers in Composites

Download or read book Transient Heat Flow Along Uni directional Fibers in Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For uni-directional fibrous composites and laminated composites, a heat-balance integral method has been developed for the analysis of transient heat flow along the fibers or in the plane of laminates. The method is based on the construction of, for the two constituent media, temperature profiles which not only satisfy the necessary boundary conditions but also fulfill the asymptotic error function properties when inter-region conduction is vanishingly small or at very early times of the heat transient.

Book An Investigation of Radiative Heat Transfer in Fibrous Thin Sheets

Download or read book An Investigation of Radiative Heat Transfer in Fibrous Thin Sheets written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibrous materials possess desirable heat transfer characteristics and are used in many thermal applications including thermal insulations. Radiant heat transfer thru such materials is very important even at moderate temperatures. Thus, a fundamental understanding of the radiative heat transfer through such materials is necessary and allows better evaluation of its insulation capabilities. Due to the complex mathematical formulation of the theory of radiative heat transfer, the solution of its equations is consequently as complicated. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations provide a practical method to understand the response of fibrous media to this electromagnetic irradiation. In this study, for the first time, the Surface-to-Surface model is used to investigate the response of fibrous materials to radiative heat transfer. The unsteady state heat transfer equations are solved for the temperature and heat flux in and around the fibers that constitute a nonwoven fibrous media. Of particular interest here is the effect of fiber diameter, fiber conductivity, and materialÃØâ'Ơâ"Øs Solid Volume Fraction (SVF) in heat transfer through the material. For a fixed fiber diameter, it is shown that the larger the solid volume fraction, the lower is the materialÃØâ'Ơâ"Øs temperature. It is also shown that the fiber conductivity has a significant influence on the radiative heat transfer in nonwoven materials. Our simulation results indicate that the average fiber temperature is directly influenced by SVF, fiber conductivity, and fiber diameter. However, SVF has been observed to have the greatest influence followed by the fiber conductivity, and lastly fiber diameter. The web thickness effect was also simulated. The materialÃØâ'Ơâ"Øs average temperature decreased with increasing thickness for fixed SVF and fiber diameter. Experimental work has also been conducted to verify the simulation results. Comparison between curve fitting of simulation and experimental data showed a.
