Book The Effect of Long Term Thermal Exposure on Plastics and Elastomers

Download or read book The Effect of Long Term Thermal Exposure on Plastics and Elastomers written by Laurence W. McKeen and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference guide brings together a wide range of essential data on the effect of long term thermal exposure on plastics and elastomers, enabling engineers to make optimal material choices and design decisions. The data is supported by explanations of how to make use of the data in real-world engineering contexts. High heat environments are common in automotive, oil and gas, household appliances, coatings, space and aeronautics and many more end uses. As a result, thermal stability data are critically important to engineers designing parts particularly that replace metals, work that is common today as they look for ways to reduce weight. The data tables in this book enable engineers and scientists to select the right materials for a given product or application across a wide range of sectors. Several polymer classes are covered, including polyolefins, polyamides, polyesters, elastomers, fluoropolymers, biodegradable plastics and more, saving readers the need to contact suppliers. The book also includes introductory sections to provide background on plastic/polymer chemistry and formulation and plastic testing methods, providing the knowledge required to make best use of the data. Essential data and practical guidance for engineers and scientists working with plastics for use in high temperature environments Includes introductory chapters on polymer chemistry and its effect on thermal stability, providing the underpinning knowledge required to utilize the data Covers a wide range of commercial polymer classes, saving readers the need to contact suppliers

Book Heat Resistant Polymers

Download or read book Heat Resistant Polymers written by J.P. Critchley and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-07 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitions of what is meant by a heat-resistant polymer vary considerably. We have taken the term to mean a polymer which can be used, at least for short time periods, at temperatures from 150°C. The greatest problem which arises in writing a monograph on such materials is the tremendous amount of data that is available. More than 2000 references have been published on one heat-resistant polymer system alone over a period of little more than two years. The result is that a very high degree of selectivity must be exercised with respect to the information reproduced. We have chosen to restrict our coverage to polymers that have received at least some degree of commercial exploitation and to details of their methods of preparation, their thermal and thermo-oxidative stabilities and modes of degradation, and their properties at elevated temperatures. It must be emphasized that other properties not cited, e. g. , hydrolytic and chemical stability, and resistance to ultraviolet radiation, may be equally important in particular uses of these materials. The "older" heat-resistant polymers, e. g. , the thermosets and some of the fluorine-containing materials, are not dealt with in such depth as are the "newer" polymers with aromatic and/or heterocyclic rings in the chain. This is because books have been available for some time on the well-established commercial polymers and developments in them have not been as marked re cently as in the aromatic and heterocyclic macromolecules.

Topics include: liquid crystalline polymers; high temperature polyimides; heat-resistant engineering polymers; and high temperature organic polymers, including their chemistry and key functional properties in moldings, films, fibers, and coatings, as well as applications in electronics, packaging, and friction/wear. This is an essential source of data on high temperature polymers.

Book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride written by Toshiyuki Nishimura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, improvements in the heat resistance of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics using grain boundary control and in plasticity at high temperatures using grain size control in order to reduce the cost of shaping Si3N4 are described. The heat resistance of Si3N4 is improved by mixing a slight amount of sintering additive as an impurity into the original material powder. The author presents his findings on the high heat resistance of Si3N4. The author also develops a new fabrication method for Si3N4 nano-ceramics that produces high plastic formability. The method developed offers two improved points in grinding and sintering processes. The author found that the plastic formability of Si3N4 nanoceramics is dependent on load stress; the results of his research are detailed in this book.
