Book Heat Release Rate Measurements in Tunnel Fires

Download or read book Heat Release Rate Measurements in Tunnel Fires written by Haukur Ingason and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes measurements of heat release rates in tunnel fires by using the oxygen consumption technique. This technique is commonly used in fire laboratories to measure heat release rates up to 10 MW. Measured heat release rates from fire tests with vehicles (a train, a bus, a subway coach and a simulated truck load) and wood cribs are presented. The total heat release rate was determined by measuring oxygen concentrations and mass flow rates over the tunnel cross section at both sides of the fire. The convective fraction of the heat release rate was determined by measuring the temperature and the mass flow rate. The technique is found to work reasonably well for tunnel fires. However, the measured convective fraction of the heat release rate need to be corrected for heat losses from the hot ceiling jet to the cold walls. The total heat release rate need to be corrected for high yields of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the exhaust gases and for vitiation of the inflowing air in the lower part of the cross section. The study is a joint project between a number of European countries with a project name EUREKA EU 499 Firetun.

Download or read book Tunnel Fire Dynamics written by Haukur Ingason and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a wide range of issues in fire safety engineering in tunnels, describes the phenomena related to tunnel fire dynamics, presents state-of-the-art research, and gives detailed solutions to these major issues. Examples for calculations are provided. The aim is to significantly improve the understanding of fire safety engineering in tunnels. Chapters on fuel and ventilation control, combustion products, gas temperatures, heat fluxes, smoke stratification, visibility, tenability, design fire curves, heat release, fire suppression and detection, CFD modeling, and scaling techniques all equip readers to create their own fire safety plans for tunnels. This book should be purchased by any engineer or public official with responsibility for tunnels. It would also be of interest to many fire protection engineers as an application of evolving technical principles of fire safety.

Book Tunnel Fire Testing and Modeling

Download or read book Tunnel Fire Testing and Modeling written by Fabio Borghetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to cast light on all aspects of tunnel fires, based on experimental activities and theoretical and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses. In particular, the authors describe a transient full-scale fire test (~15 MW), explaining how they designed and performed the experimental activity inside the Morgex North tunnel in Italy. The entire organization of the experiment is described, from preliminary evaluations to the solutions found for management of operational difficulties and safety issues. This fire test allowed the collection of different measurements (temperature, air velocity, smoke composition, pollutant species) useful for validating and improving CFD codes and for testing the real behavior of the tunnel and its safety systems during a diesel oil fire with a significant heat release rate. Finally, the fire dynamics are compared with empirical correlations, CFD simulations, and literature measurements obtained in other similar tunnel fire tests. This book will be of interest to all engineers and public officials who are concerned with the nature, prevention, and management of tunnel fires.

Book A Gallery of Combustion and Fire

Download or read book A Gallery of Combustion and Fire written by Charles E. Baukal, Jr. and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gallery of Combustion and Fire is the first book to provide a graphical perspective of the extremely visual phenomenon of combustion in full color. It is designed primarily to be used in parallel with, and supplement existing combustion textbooks that are usually in black and white, making it a challenge to visualize such a graphic phenomenon. Each image includes a description of how it was generated, which is detailed enough for the expert but simple enough for the novice. Processes range from small scale academic flames up to full scale industrial flames under a wide range of conditions such as low and normal gravity, atmospheric to high pressures, actual and simulated flames, and controlled and uncontrolled flames. Containing over 500 color images, with over 230 contributors from over 75 organizations, this volume is a valuable asset for experts and novices alike.

Book Temperature Calculation in Fire Safety Engineering

Download or read book Temperature Calculation in Fire Safety Engineering written by Ulf Wickström and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a consistent scientific background to engineering calculation methods applicable to analyses of materials reaction-to-fire, as well as fire resistance of structures. Several new and unique formulas and diagrams which facilitate calculations are presented. It focuses on problems involving high temperature conditions and, in particular, defines boundary conditions in a suitable way for calculations. A large portion of the book is devoted to boundary conditions and measurements of thermal exposure by radiation and convection. The concepts and theories of adiabatic surface temperature and measurements of temperature with plate thermometers are thoroughly explained. Also presented is a renewed method for modeling compartment fires, with the resulting simple and accurate prediction tools for both pre- and post-flashover fires. The final chapters deal with temperature calculations in steel, concrete and timber structures exposed to standard time-temperature fire curves. Useful temperature calculation tools are included, and several examples demonstrate how the finite element code TASEF can be used to calculate temperature in various configurations. Temperature Calculation in Fire Safety Engineering is intended for researchers, students, teachers, and consultants in fire safety engineering. It is also suitable for others interested in analyzing and understanding fire, fire dynamics, and temperature development. Review questions and exercises are provided for instructor use.
