Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you liked Rae's earlier book, A Prairie Kitchen, you'll find another equally delightful slice of history in Hearts and Homes. Her research into the foods, families and lifestyles of the people who farmed the Heartland from 1895-1939 makes for a fascinating mixture. You'll find delicious recipes (just like Grandma used to make!) plus gain new inspiration from the challenges these dedicated cooks faced in feeding their families during the scarcity of the war years and the Great Depression. Developing recipes and sharing the results has been a lifelong vocation for Rae Katherine Eighmey. Today her kitchen library has thousands of recipes from 19th and 20th century cookbooks and pioneers' journals and magazines. It is her goal to make them easy for today's cooks to make in their own kitchens, and she has adapted hundreds of them for modern cooking methods. She says translating these recipes is part detective story, part chemistry and part old-fashioned cooking skill.

Book excerpt: In this national bestseller, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, has created a classic look at the values that can change our world--and how to stand up for them. Drawing on anecdotes from his much-admired life of faith and service, as well as examples from American culture today, he examines ten virtues that have always illuminated the path to a better world: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism, and faith. He then shows how the two guardians of virtue--marriage and the family--can keep us on that path, even in difficult times. Standing for Something is an inspiring blueprint for what we all can do--as individuals, as a nation, and as a world community--to rediscover the values and virtues that have historically made us strong and that will lead us to a brighter future.

Book Strong Hearts and Healing Hands

Download or read book Strong Hearts and Healing Hands written by Clifford E. Trafzer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1924, the United States began a bold program in public health. The Indian Service of the United States hired its first nurses to work among Indians living on reservations. This corps of white women were dedicated to improving Indian health. In 1928, the first field nurses arrived in the Mission Indian Agency of Southern California. These nurses visited homes and schools, providing public health and sanitation information regarding disease causation and prevention. Over time, field nurses and Native people formed a positive working relationship that resulted in the decline of mortality from infectious diseases. Many Native Americans accepted and used Western medicine to fight pathogens, while also continuing Indigenous medicine ways. Nurses helped control tuberculosis, measles, influenza, pneumonia, and a host of gastrointestinal sicknesses. In partnership with the community, nurses quarantined people with contagious diseases, tested for infections, and tracked patients and contacts. Indians turned to nurses and learned about disease prevention. With strong hearts, Indians eagerly participated in the tuberculosis campaign of 1939–40 to x-ray tribal members living on twenty-nine reservations. Through their cooperative efforts, Indians and health-care providers decreased deaths, cases, and misery among the tribes of Southern California.

Book excerpt: "Parents looking for a book about separation or divorce will find few offerings as positive, matter-of-fact, or child-centered as this one. . . . Simple, yet profoundly satisfying." – Booklist (starred review) At Mommy’s house, Alex has a soft chair. At Daddy’s house, Alex has a rocking chair. In each home, Alex also has a special bedroom and lots of friends to play with. But whether Alex is with Mommy or with Daddy, one thing always stays the same - Alex is loved. The gently reassuring text focuses on what is gained rather than what is lost when parents divorce, while the sensitive illustrations, depicting two unique homes in all their small details, firmly establish Alex’s place in both of them. Two Homes will help children - and parents - embrace even the most difficult of changes with an open and optimistic heart.
