Book The Devil on the Doorstep

Download or read book The Devil on the Doorstep written by Annabelle Forest and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annabelle Forest was just seven years old when she was inducted into a twisted sex cult by her own mother. For the next few years she was brainwashed by the cult's leader, Colin Batley, who ran a harem of followers from his unassuming cul-de-sac in Kidwelly, Wales. Batley ruled the cult with an iron will, his twisted ideology based on Aleister Crowley's Book of the Law, which informed their day-to-day lives. From the age of 11, Annabelle was repeatedly raped by Batley, and threatened with going to hell if she angered 'the gods' by refusing Batley's sick demands. Annabelle's mother joined in the sessions and even filmed them. Annabelle lived a double life - a schoolgirl by day, a sex slave at night. It might have endured for years had she not fallen pregnant at 17 with Batley's baby. In February 2008 she gave birth to a daughter, Emily, who gave Annabelle a reason to live and hope. Now she knew she had to escape, especially after Batley forced her into prostitution when Emily was three months old. She contacted relatives through Facebook on a computer in the public library and found the courage to report Batley, her mother and the other cult members to the police. In 2011 her evidence helped convict 48-year-old Batley for life on 11 charges of rape and numerous other sexual offences.Annabelle's mother was also jailed, along with two others in a case that came to be known as the 'cul-de-sac cult'. But Annabelle's story was far from over - she had to adjust to a new life away from the rules and rituals of the cult. Today she lives a happy and settled life with Emily and her partner but the nightmares of her damaged past will haunt her forever. Child of Couragerefers to Annabelle herself but also her daughter, the child who gave her the chance to hope, the will to fight and the courage to live again.

Book Women Subalterns and Ecologies in South and Southeast Asian Women s Fiction

Download or read book Women Subalterns and Ecologies in South and Southeast Asian Women s Fiction written by Chitra Sankaran and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, East Asia has gained prominence and has become synonymous with Asia, while other Asian regions, such as South and Southeast Asia, have been subsumed under it. The resultant overgeneralization has meant that significant aspects of the global ecological crisis as they affect these two regions have been overlooked. Chitra Sankaran refocuses the global lens on these two rapidly developing regions of Asia. Combining South Asian and Southeast Asian philosophical views and folk perspectives with mainstream ecocritical and ecofeminist theories, she generates a localized critical idiom that qualifies and subverts some established theoretical assumptions. This pioneering study, introducing a corpus of more than thirty ecofictions by women writers from twelve countries in South and Southeast Asia, examines how recent global threats to ecosystems, in both nature and culture, impact subdominant groups, including women. This new corpus reveals how women and subalterns engage with various aspects of critical ecologies. Using ecofeminist theory augmented by postcolonial and risk theories as the main theoretical framework, Sankaran argues that these women writers present unique perspectives that review Asian women’s relationships to human and nonhuman worlds.

Download or read book Nature written by Peter Coates and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Nature' is a deceptively simple and ahistorical term, suggestingintrinsic, unchanging reality. Yet nature has a history too, bothin terms of human attitudes and human impacts. Coates outlines themajor understandings of 'nature' in the western world sinceclassical times, from nature as higher authority to its more recentmeaning of threatened physical space and life forms. Unlike many others, this book places the history of attitudes tonature within the story of human-induced changes in the materialenvironment. And few others take a supranational perspective, orcross the divides between historical eras. A distinctive unifying theme is Coates's interest in how 'green'writers over the last thirty years have interpreted our pastdealings with nature, specifically their efforts to diagnose theroots of contemporary ecological problems and their search forancestors. He concludes with a discussion of the future of naturein the context of developments such as the 'new' ecology, globalwarming, advances in genetic engineering and research on animalbehaviour. Assuming no previous knowledge, Nature provides the reader with anaccessible synthesis and introduction to some of environmentalhistory's central features and debates, confirming its status asone of the most enthralling current pursuits within historicalstudies. This will be essential reading for second-year undergraduates andabove in cultural history and environmental history, as well as tothe general reader interested in environmental issues.

Book Desertscapes in the Global South and Beyond

Download or read book Desertscapes in the Global South and Beyond written by Sushila Shekhawat and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing a rich diversity of voices, this volume seeks to explore the different facets of Anthropocene naturecultures in the desert biomes of the Global South and beyond. Essays in this collection will articulate issues of desertification, indigeneity and re-inhabitation in narratives that thread together Tibet, China, Australia, India, South Mexico, South Africa and Brazil in all their richness and complexity. Re-imaging the desert figure’s rich biodiversity, this book presents new ways to envision the human relationships to natural ecology and mindful accountability, tracing complex narrative connections and challenging hegemonic norms of its role in the co-construction of identity, affect, and gender. Essays also aim to engage in an intertextual conversation with colonial genres that influence the popular conception of these spaces, moving beyond the usual tropes to forge a topographically informed desert identity and posit a ‘natureculture’ ecosystem based on the interpenetration of landscape, culture, and history. This volume includes literary exploration of environmental injustices, analyzing motifs of deforestation, land degradation, falling crop production, toxic man-made chemicals, and extractivist practices linked to various social and economic stressors and gradients in economic and political power. This diverse volume will provide a significant contribution to desert humanities from the Global South, responding to the pressing problems of the Anthropocene and employing place-based ecocritical frameworks that help us imagine a sustainable way of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shoshana is the daughter of Bella, a black house slave at Tanner Plantation. After Shoshana turned sixteen years of age, her owner, Eli Tanner, made arrangements to sell her to a neighbor plantation owner. His wife, Clara, a staunch abolitionist, makes arrangement for Shoshanna to be taken to Florida until the underground railroad opens up again, and she can get to Philadelphia, to freedom. Flying Eagle, a young Seminole warrior, steals her heart, and she happily settles into life with the Seminoles. Meantime, Eli has offered a large bounty for Shoshana's return. Whitey, a slave bounty hunter, and his partners kidnap Shoshana and take her back to the plantation in Georgia. In 1835, the Second Seminole War begins and after many heartbreaking years of death and hunger, Flying Eagle leads Seminole women, children, and old men deep into the Pahay-okee. (Florida Everglades). Chickees are built, and the women scratch for food much like the wild animals that share the harsh, wet wilderness. Their lives are hard, but they know it is the only way to survive and remain on their homeland. In Pahay-okee, the children would be safe and learn to laugh again. They could teach them to respect the Great Breath Giver's gift of earth, and they could hear the beat of the drums and dance. There, in the swamps of South Florida, where the white man was afraid to venture, they survived, and they never surrendered to the United States.
