Book Tempted and Tried

Book excerpt: Although temptation is a common and well-acknowledged part of the human experience, few realize the truth behind temptation and fewer still know how to defeat it. Tempted and Tried will not reassure Christians by claiming that temptation is less powerful or less prevalent than it is; instead, it will prepare believers for battle by telling the truth about the cosmic war that is raging. Moore shows that the temptation of every Christian is part of a broader conspiracy against God, a conspiracy that confronts everyone who shares the flesh of Jesus through human birth and especially confronts those who share the Spirit of Christ through the new birth of redemption. Moore walks readers through the Devil's ancient strategies for temptation revealed in Jesus' wilderness testing. Moore considers how those strategies might appear in a contemporary context and points readers to a way of escape. Tempted and Tried will remind Christians that temptation must be understood in terms of warfare, encouraging them with the truth that victory has already been secured through the triumph of Christ.

This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Direct Influence of Gradual Variations of Temperature Upon the Rate of Beat of the Dog's Heart IN the year 1881 I brie y described (1) a method of experimenting by which the heart and lungs of a Dog or Cat could be completely isolated physiologically from the remainder of the body of the animal, and kept alive some hours for study in an apparently normal condition, the heart beating regularly and maintaining a good arterial pressure. Since then I have been at work investigating the in uence of various conditions upon the pulse-rate of Dogs' hearts so isolated; while under my supervision several of my pupils have been engaged in studying the work done in a unit of time by such hearts under different external conditions. As regards the effects of variations of arterial pressure upon the pulse-rate of the isolated Dog's heart, my results have already been published and detailed observations as to the in uence of variations in 'venous pressure will Shortly be printed. But in SO far as the in uence of temperature variations upon the cardiac rhythm is concerned, only a brief preliminary announcement has been made. In the present paper I propose to give a full account of my experiments upon this subject, which is one that, apart from and in addition to its purely physiological interest, has considerable practical importance in connexion with inquiries as to the immediate cause of the quick pulse so constantly found in warm - blooded animals suffering from fever. Book excerpt: A riveting true story of murder and detection in 15th-century Paris, by one of the most brilliant medievalists of his generation. On a chilly November night in 1407, Louis of Orleans was murdered by a band of masked men. The crime stunned and paralyzed France since Louis had often ruled in place of his brother King Charles, who had gone mad. As panic seized Paris, an investigation began. In charge was the Provost of Paris, Guillaume de Tignonville, the city's chief law enforcement officer -- and one of history's first detectives. As de Tignonville began to investigate, he realized that his hunt for the truth was much more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. A rich portrait of a distant world, Blood Royal is a gripping story of conspiracy, crime and an increasingly desperate hunt for the truth. And in Guillaume de Tignonville, we have an unforgettable detective for the ages, a classic gumshoe for a cobblestoned era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days many people are finding it difficult, if not impossible, to experience God in their lives. Some are finding it less and less necessary, or even desirable, to seek the presence of God. Our Everywhere God! is a collection of poems that draws insight from the experiences of everyday life and acts as a reminder of the presence of God in all things. Written in a manner both simple and profound, Our Everywhere God! invites readers to recognize and celebrate Gods presence in prayer, nature, relationships, and suffering. Renee Hilton-Taylor found the inspiration to write this book during times of quiet prayer. These poems have challenged her to come out from underneath a bushel of fear and doubt in order to let her light shine. It is Gods presence within that allows the divine to be experienced everywhere. The light in the window Gave me such peace. It shown in the darkness, And my worries released. When a lamp gives off light Within a very dark room, It dispels the unknown questions And the feelings of unwelcomed gloom. When light shines within our darkness, Then we are able to see All the things that hold us back From Gods call, Come follow Me.
