Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Africa’s own “heart of darkness”? It is what confronts Ayané when, after three years abroad, she returns to the Central African village of her birth. Now an “outsider” with foreign ways distrusted by her fellow villagers, she must face alone the customs and superstitions that bind this clan of men and women. When invading militia organize a horrific ceremony that they claim will help reunite Africa, Ayané is forced to confront the monstrosity of the act that follows, as well as the responsibility that all the villagers must bear for silently accepting evil done in their name. Through Ayané’s unwilling witness, Léonora Miano probes the themes of submission and responsibility and questions the role of Africans in the suffering of their fellows. Also exploring African identity, Dark Heart of the Night is a profoundly disturbing novel in its evocation of the darkest side of people driven by their instinct to survive.

Book George Shiras

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book George Shiras written by Jean-Christophe Bailly and published by Editions Xavier Barral. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though sometimes dubbed "the first wildlife photographer," George Shiras is not a prominent name in the history of photography. While his photos were shown at the Paris World Fair of 1900, Shiras--also a lawyer and politician--did not consider himself an artist; his goal was, above all, to document wildlife from the pre-environmental perspective to which he dedicated his life. In 1893, Shiras perfected the procedure of nocturnal flash photography in various regions of the US and Canada. It was in contact with hunters--and also with Native American guides or trappers--that he became initiated in the ways of wildlife, eventually "exchanging the rifle for the camera," as he himself put it. Despite his aesthetic innocence, Shiras succeeded in capturing the first night-time wildlife photos ever created, thanks to both his use of flash photography and camera-trap equipment. This gorgeous hardcover compiles his prescient nocturnal photography. George Shiras III (1859-1942) was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1889 and 1890 and was elected to the 58th Congress. After his time in Congress, Shiras became engaged in biological research and wildlife photography; he was a member of the Boone and Crockett Club, a conservation organization founded by Theodore Roosevelt. In 1935, he published a two-volume set of over 960 of his wildlife photographs with the National Geographic Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Night Shift, Dr. Brian Goldman shares his experiences in the witching hours at Mount Sinai Hospital in downtown Toronto. We meet the kinds of patients who walk into an E.R. after midnight: late-night revellers injured on their way home after last call, teens assaulted in the streets by other teens and a woman who punches another woman out of jealousy over a man. But Goldman also reveals the emotional, heartbreaking side of everyday E.R. visits: adult children forced to make life and death decisions about critically ill parents, victims of sexual assault, and mentally ill and homeless patients looking for understanding and a quick fix in the twenty-four-hour waiting room. Written with Goldman’s trademark honesty and with surprising humour, The Night Shift is also a frank look at many issues facing the medical profession today, and it offers a highly compelling inside view into an often shrouded world.

Book Every Night the Trees Disappear

Download or read book Every Night the Trees Disappear written by Alan Greenberg and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You know from seeing it that Herzog was up to something strange in filming Heart of Glass. Now the mystery is clarified. Alan Greenberg peers into the heart of darkness of the great artist." —Roger Ebert&“Mesmerizing . . . as poetic and mysterious as the film itself.&”—Jim JarmuschThis intimate chronicle of the visionary filmmaker Werner Herzog directing a masterwork is interwoven with Herzog's original screenplay to create a unique vision of its own. Alan Greenberg was, according to the director, the first &“outsider&” to seek him out and recognize his greatness. At the end of their first evening together Herzog urged Greenberg to work with him on his new film--and everything thereafter. In this film, Heart of Glass, Herzog exercised control over his actors by hypnotizing them before shooting their scenes. The result was one of the most haunting movies ever made. Not since Lillian Ross's classic 1950 book Picture has an American writer given such a close, first-hand, book-length account of how a director makes a movie. But this is not a conventional, journalistic account. Instead it presents a unique vision with the feel of a novel--intimate, penetrating, and filled with mystery. Alan Greenberg is a writer, film director, film producer, and photographer. He is also the author of Love in Vain: A Vision of Robert Johnson. Werner Herzog is considered one of the world's greatest filmmakers. His books include Conquest of the Useless and Of Walking in Ice.

Book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time

Download or read book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time written by Mark Haddon and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling modern classic—both poignant and funny—narrated by a fifteen year old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer, and turns to his favourite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the workings of Christopher’s mind. And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotions. The effect is dazzling, making for one of the freshest debut in years: a comedy, a tearjerker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.

Book The Heart of the Qur an

Download or read book The Heart of the Qur an written by Lex Hixon and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Neither as Christians or Jews, nor simply as intellectually responsible individuals,"says Hixon, "have members of Western civilization been sensitively educated or even accurately informed about Islam." As tensions between America and the Middle East grow, we should promote cross-cultural understanding, not violence. This new edition, with a new foreword and commentary by Neil Douglas-Klotz, allows the reader to drink from the illuminating fountain of the Holy Qur’an—the foundation of Islamic culture. First published in 1988, Hixon’s poetic meditations on over nine-hundred passages from the Qur’an show that they are not relics from the past but exist in a timeless present, communicating as vividly as when they were first uttered. Through clear and accessible language, Hixon illustrates how the teachings of Islam can be applied to contemporary everyday life issues such as love, relationships, justice, work, and self-knowledge. In addition to the selections themselves, the book contains readable, lively introductions to the tradition of Islam, its basic precepts, and what it says about other religions. As the first such work in English to be written by a Muslim, The Heart of the Qur’an continues to show that Islam is among the great wisdom traditions of humanity.
