Book Follow the Spring North Land s End to John O groats

Download or read book Follow the Spring North Land s End to John O groats written by Christine Roche and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written from the pages of the diary kept by the author on her walk, the diary being written every night or perhaps the next day while all the experiences were fresh in her mind. You can read it and "live the walk" as you do so. Following the spring north meant enjoying the sight of each new spring flower and sight or sound of birds as the journey continued northward through ever changing landscape. Although a stress fracture to the neck of the femur delayed the completion of the walk until the following spring, this did not seem to break the continuous nature of the journey; "It's still there - Keep smiling!" kept her looking forward to the next stage of the walk. She met some delightful people on the walk, enjoyed the company of some good friends for parts of it and enjoyed the "bliss of solitude" for much of it, appreciating being alone in wild places but not lonely. Having walked and enjoyed the scenery from the south of Cornwall to the north of Scotland, she was sorry to finish.

Book The Cotswold Way Companion

Download or read book The Cotswold Way Companion written by Cotswold Voluntary Wardens and published by Cotswold Way Association. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book will help you to get the most out of walking the Cotswold Way - perhaps the best loved of the UK's sixteen designated national trails. It’s special for two reasons: it focuses on the Cotswold Way's natural environment and its archaeology and history; and it’s the work of people with great knowledge and experience of the trail: members of the Cotswold Way Association (CWA), the charity set up in 2016 to promote its conservation and protection, and Cotswold Voluntary Wardens who patrol the trail and lead walks on it. Proceeds from the book, available as paperback and eBook, will go towards the trail’s upkeep and improvement. Chapter 1 spells out the book’s aims and illustrates the types of trail improvement the Cotswold Way Association funds. Chapter 2 introduces you to the Cotswolds that are the trail's setting - in particular, their geology, grasslands and woodland, distinctive settlement pattern of small towns and villages, vernacular architecture and historical monuments - ranging from Neolithic barrows and Iron-age hill forts to Roman villas, medieval castles, manor houses and ‘wool’ churches, along with several notable towers and beacons. Chapters 3-12 deal with the typically ten mile or so long stages of the annual Cotswold Way walks that Cotswold Voluntary Wardens lead. Each one draws attention to the stage's main points of interest and beauty, highlighting a major theme such as outstanding flora and fauna or grand estates or impact of the wool trade and cloth making.

Book excerpt: “If one keeps on walking, everything will be alright.” So said Danish writer Søren Kierkegaard, and so thought philosophy buff Gary Hayden as he set off on Britain’s most challenging trek: to walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End. But it wasn’t all quaint country lanes, picture-postcard villages and cosy bed and breakfasts. In this humorous, inspiring and delightfully British tale, Gary finds solitude and weary limbs bring him closer to the wisdom of the world’s greatest thinkers. Recalling Rousseau’s reverie, Bertrand Russell’s misery, Plato’s love of beauty and Epicurus’ joy in simplicity, Walking with Plato offers a breath of fresh, country air and clarity for anyone craving an escape from the humdrum of everyday life.
