Book Interest Groups and Elections in Canada

Download or read book Interest Groups and Elections in Canada written by F. Leslie Seidle and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two studies in Interest Groups and Elections in Canada explore the nature and influence of special interest groups. They consider different aspects of the question, "In the context of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, how can the laws intended to secure a fair electoral process be reconciled with freedom of expression?" Janet Hiebert reviews the limits on interest groups adopted in 1974 and amended in 1983, profiles the groups involved int he 1988 federal election, and discusses relevant legislation and jurisprudence in the provinces and abroad. She concludes that spending limits for parties and candidates will only be effective if there are also restrictions on independent expenditures during elections by groups and individuals. Brian Tanguay and Barry Kay assess the influence attributed to locally oriented interest groups, including by members of Parliament, and conclude that these organizations have less influence on the political process than is the popular view. The authors conclude that dissatisfaction is a key variable explaining the role of these interest groups and their activities during elections.

Book The Deregulatory Moment

Download or read book The Deregulatory Moment written by Robert G Boatright and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who assume that increased regulation of political spending is inevitable in democratic nations, recent developments in U.S. campaign finance law appear puzzling. Is deregulation, exemplified by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC, a harbinger of things to come elsewhere or further evidence that the United States remains an anomaly? In this volume, experts on the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Germany, Sweden, France, and several other European nations explore what deregulation means in the context of political campaigns and demonstrate how such comparisons can inform the study of campaign finance in the U.S. Whereas the contributors do not settle on any single theory of change in campaign finance law or any single perspective on the relationship between changes seen in the U.S. and those in other nations over the past decade, they do concur that the U.S. is rapidly retreating from the types of regulations that defined campaign finance law in most democratic nations during the latter decades of the twentieth century. By tracing and analyzing the recent history of regulation, the contributors shed light on many pressing topics, including the relationship between public opinion and campaign finance law, the role of scandals in inspiring reform, and the changing incentives of political parties, interest groups, and the courts.

Book Contested Constitutionalism

  • Author : James B. Kelly
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 0774858893
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Contested Constitutionalism written by James B. Kelly and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982 was accompanied by much fanfare and public debate. This book does not celebrate the Charter; rather it offers a critique by distinguished scholars of law and political science of its effect on democracy, judicial power, and the place of Quebec and Aboriginal peoples twenty-five years later. By employing diverse methodological approaches, contributors shift the focus of debate from the Charter’s appropriateness to its impact – for better or worse – on political institutions, public policy, and conceptions of citizenship in the Canadian federation.

Book Constitutional implications of the Cabinet manual

Download or read book Constitutional implications of the Cabinet manual written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Political and Constitutional Reform Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst welcoming the motivation behind the Manual and the transparency it brings to the workings of Government, the Committee says that in practice the Manual may be treated as having greater authority than originally intended, particularly where its content extends beyond matters purely for the Executive. All the work of the Executive, including the Cabinet Manual , is subject to scrutiny by Parliament. The fact that the document is primarily directed at the Executive does not exempt it from this scrutiny. The Committee makes some practical suggestions for specific improvements to the text, focusing particularly on the chapters covering government formation and ministers and Parliament. The Committee also challenges some of the specific content of the draft: the failure to include the convention, acknowledged elsewhere by the Government, that Parliament should have the opportunity to debate decisions to commit troops to armed conflict; guidance on when a Prime Minister should resign following a hung Parliament. The Committee recommends that the House should hold a regular debate on the Manual. The Committee felt, despite dissatisfaction with parts of the original draft, there was no reason to delay production of an approved version. The new version need not be perfect as it will be subject to further review.
