Book Hearing Protector Device Compendium

Download or read book Hearing Protector Device Compendium written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Hearing Protector Device Compendium is a comprehensive searchable database of commercial hearing protection devices. This unique Web tool was created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to help workers and safety professionals select the most appropriate product for their unique environment. The tool identifies hearing protector devices by type, manufacturer, and noise exposure level. It also explains essential product features, including desired noise reduction ratings, mean attenuations, standard deviations of attenuations, protector construction and materials, and other features that can aid the selection of protectors for specific situations. The Compendium contributes to the protection of workers in all industries including manufacturing, mining, and construction by contributing to the reduction of incidences of occupational noise-induced hearing loss and increasing awareness about noise hazards and solutions. The Compendium can ultimately empower workers to seek more effective hearing conservation measures. To access the Web tool go to www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/noise/ to locate the Hearing Protector Device Compendium web link."--NIOSHTIC-2

Book Hearing Loss Research at NIOSH

Download or read book Hearing Loss Research at NIOSH written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-12-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (U.S. Congress, 1970). Today the agency is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIOSH is charged with the responsibility to "conduct . . . research, experiments, and demonstrations relating to occupational safety and health" and to develop "innovative methods, techniques, and approaches for dealing with [those] problems" (U.S. Congress, 1970). Its research targets include identifying criteria for use in setting worker exposure standards and exploring new problems that may arise in the workplace. Prevention of occupational hearing loss has been part of the NIOSH research portfolio from the time the agency was established. A principal cause of occupational hearing loss is the cumulative effect of years of exposure to hazardous noise. Exposure to certain chemicals with or without concomitant noise exposure may also contribute to occupational hearing loss. Hearing loss may impede communication in the workplace and contribute to safety hazards. Occupationally acquired hearing loss may also have an adverse effect on workers' lives beyond the workplace. No medical means are currently available to prevent or reverse it, although hearing aids are widely used and research on other treatments is ongoing. Occupational hearing loss is a serious concern, although the number of workers affected is uncertain. In September 2004, NIOSH requested that the National Academies conduct reviews of as many as 15 NIOSH programs with respect to the impact and relevance of their work in reducing workplace injury and illness and to identify future directions that their work might take. The Hearing Loss Research Program was selected by NIOSH as one of the first two programs to be reviewed. Hearing Loss Research at NIOSH examines the following issues for the Hearing Loss Research Program: (1) Progress in reducing workplace illness and injuries through occupational safety and health research, assessed on the basis of an analysis of relevant data about workplace illnesses and injuries and an evaluation of the effect that NIOSH research has had in reducing illness and injuries, (2) Progress in targeting new research to the areas of occupational safety and health most relevant to future improvements in workplace protection, and (3) Significant emerging research areas that appear especially important in terms of their relevance to the mission of NIOSH.

Book Patty s Industrial Hygiene 4 Volume Set

Download or read book Patty s Industrial Hygiene 4 Volume Set written by Vernon E. Rose and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 2875 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition in 1948, Patty’s Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology has become a flagship publication for Wiley. In the course of its nearly six decades in print, it has evolved into a standard reference for the fields of occupational health and toxicology. The volumes on Industrial Hygiene are cornerstone reference works for chemists, engineers, toxicologists, and occupational safety personnel. Since the 5th edition was published, the field of IH has changed with personnel often working for multinational firms, self-employed, at small consulting firms. Their environment has changed and expanded, and thus also the types of information and resources required have changed. The traditional areas of interest to occupational health and safety professionals include anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of potential hazards. In addition to these, the 6th edition provides information and reliable resources to prepare for natural disasters, exposures to biological agents and potential acts of terrorism.

Book Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control

Download or read book Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control written by Malcolm J. Crocker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-10-05 with total page 1594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most acclaimed reference works in the area of acoustics in recent years have been our Encyclopedia of Acoustics, 4 Volume set and the Handbook of Acoustics spin-off. These works, edited by Malcolm Crocker, positioned Wiley as a major player in the acoustics reference market. With our recently published revision of Beranek & Ver's Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, Wiley is a highly respected name in the acoustics business. Crocker's new handbook covers an area of great importance to engineers and designers. Noise and vibration control is one largest areas of application of the acoustics topics covered in the successful encyclopedia and handbook. It is also an area that has been under-published in recent years. Crocker has positioned this reference to cover the gamut of topics while focusing more on the applications to industrial needs. In this way the book will become the best single source of need-to-know information for the professional markets.
