Book excerpt: This document records the oral and written testimony of persons participating in a U.S. House of Representatives hearing on employment and training needs during the current recession. Testimony was given by leaders of youth education and jobs programs, congressional representatives, a college president, and several unemployed workers. Witnesses said that the recession has hit the country very hard, that millions of good jobs have been lost and will not be restored, and millions of people are likely to remain unemployed. Job losses have affected all sectors of the economy, white collar as well as blue collar. Some witnesses supported education and employment programs, such as those authorized in H.R. 4122, which would create jobs to rebuild the public infrastructure, and H.R. 4175, which would set aside funds for public works projects that would in turn create jobs. Recommendations were also made for improving jobs and education programs for poor and minority group youths. (KC)
