Book Healthcare from the Trenches

Download or read book Healthcare from the Trenches written by Alejandro Badia and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. healthcare system is in crisis. As Americans, we're facing serious problems - not only with skyrocketing healthcare costs, but also lack of patient access and inefficient delivery. Despite all the political debates and media coverage on healthcare policy and reform, there is always one glaring omission: Feedback from the people in the trenches - the doctors and other healthcare professionals who actually provide care to the patients. This book is written from a doctor's perspective, by Alejandro Badia, M.D., F.A.C.S., who didn't want to write this book, but felt he had to because of the incredible problems he sees every day in getting the patient the care they need. As an expert, his treatment plans are constantly second-guessed and obstructed by the system which has a near zero understanding of the problem that the patient faces. It became unbearable for Dr. Badia to continue to practice without calling out what is happening every day, as the norm, and is not the exception anymore.Medicine, once a noble calling, as evidenced by The Hippocratic Oath (Do No Harm), has transformed into an oppressive burdensome system for both doctors and patients. Non-Medical Experts hired by the Insurance Companies with zero medical training, and without any degrees or knowledge (in most cases) are calling the shots and continue to interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, delay and prevent the delivery of care, and present an obstacle to innovations that would improve patient outcomes and reduce overall healthcare costs. This is a life and death matter and people are dying because of this flawed system.Healthcare from the Trenches will give you an in-depth behind the scenes look at our system from a practicing doctors' perspective along with contributors ranging from fellow colleagues to beleaguered patients, who offer their insights and share their personal stories to illustrate the inherent shortcomings in the U.S. healthcare industry as well as proposed solutions.

Book The Medical Response to the Trench Diseases in World War One

Download or read book The Medical Response to the Trench Diseases in World War One written by Robert Atenstaedt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the trench diseases—trench fever, trench nephritis and trench foot—and examines how doctors responded to them in the context of the Great War. It details the problems that they faced in tackling these conditions, “new” to military warfare. After an introduction to the subject, the second chapter sketches the socio-economic and scientific context within which the response was mounted. The development of bacteriology, sanitation and medical research in the British Army is examined, as is the structure and role of the wartime RAMC, the main body involved in the response to the trench diseases. Divisions between medical practitioners concerning the aetiology of epidemic disease are also described. The third and fourth chapters present a detailed inquiry into how the diseases were defined, and how these definitions were used to counteract them. The effectiveness of the medical response is evaluated in the conclusion, which also examines the impact that the response to the trench diseases had on military-medical progress and medical specialisation. An analysis of the medical response to the trench diseases reveals a conflict between clinicians holding views on disease causation along a spectrum—contagionists, contingent-contagionists and con-figurationists. Faced with their inability to treat the trench diseases effectively, the book argues that the extremely diverse initial interpretation of the trench diseases was replaced by a majority view that all three were a product of the trenches. This enabled an effective response to be mounted, using public health methods, reinforced by discipline, close surveillance, administrative organisation, and cooperation between military and medical branches, as well as within the Army Medical Service.

Download or read book Electronic Medical Records written by Neil S. Skolnik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-20 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physician adoption of electronic medical records (EMRs) has become a national priority. It is said that EMRs have the potential to greatly improve patient care, to provide the data needed for more effective population management and quality assurance of both an individual practice’s patients and well as patients of large health care systems, and the potential to create efficiencies that allow physicians to provide this improved care at a far lower cost than at present. There is currently a strong U.S. government push for physicians to adopt EMR technology, with the Obama administration emphasizing the use of EMRs as an important part of the future of health care and urging widespread adoption of this technology by 2014. This timely book for the primary care community offers a concise and easy to read guide for implementing an EMR system. Organized in six sections, this invaluable title details the general state of the EMR landscape, covering the government’s incentive program, promises and pitfalls of EMR technology, issues related to standardization and the range of EMR vendors from which a provider can choose. Importantly, chapter two provides a detailed and highly instructional account of the experiences that a range of primary care providers have had in implementing EMR systems. Chapter three discusses how to effectively choose an EMR system, while chapters four and five cover all of the vital pre-implementation and implementation issues in establishing an EMR system in the primary care environment. Finally, chapter six discusses how to optimize and maintain a new EMR system to achieve the full cost savings desired. Concise, direct, but above all honest in recognizing the challenges in choosing and implementing an electronic health record in primary care, Electronic Medical Records: A Practical Guide for Primary Care has been written with the busy primary care physician in mind.

Book Health Care in the Trenches

Download or read book Health Care in the Trenches written by Jimmie K. Butts and published by . This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her second book, Health Care in the Trenches, nurse, humorist, public speaker, and author Jimmie Butts recounts her experiences on the road as a temporary-replacement family nurse practitioner in locations as diverse as Bethel, Alaska, and Morenci, Arizona. She worked with a wide variety of patientsincluding many from marginalized ethnic groups such as Native Alaskans, Native Americans, and Hispanicsin both urban and rural settings. These experiences quickly acquainted her with the real trenches of health care in America.Far more than a mere medical travelogue, Health Care in the Trenches describes both the colorful, unique cultural milieus the author found (including their indigenous humor) and the often unusual cases she encountered, as well as what she learned during those seven years about the present state of American health care and the art of nursing: My journeys . . . convinced me, more than ever, that one must perfect the art of caring for people.. . . The art of nursing requires active listening, looking into a patients eyes, looking and touching a patients body, and honing the skills that one needs in order to understand who the person is and what he or she is all about. . . .I hope you will see, through my experiences, that connecting with people, whether they are patients, customers, family, or co-workers by listening, touching, laughing, and caring, with your eyes, ears, and heart can make a difference. The rewards for you are priceless.Jimmie Butts observations and reflections are all the more significant because they come not from an idealistic novice, but from a highly experienced professional caregiver: she began the adventures recounted here after she passed age sixty, after she had retired from a distinguished forty-year career in nursing. And her perspective on American health care encompasses both ends of the stethoscope: in the midst of her time on the road, she became a patient herself, experiencing all the anxiety, pain, and treatment of breast cancer in 1996. Today she is alive and well, focused on communicating to others the value of loving life in spite of the nagging fears that they might have about recurrent illness.Health Care in the Trenches is a book for those interested in a first-hand account of the stark realities of the American healthcare system (especially as it applies to often-overlooked minority groups) and the art of nursing as described by one of its masterful practitioners. It is a book from and to the heart

Book The Trust Crisis in Healthcare

Download or read book The Trust Crisis in Healthcare written by David A. Shore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of trust in our healthcare system brings ominous results, from decreasing health outcomes to increasing costs, from organization inefficiencies to a pervasive pattern of litigation. This will only worsen as healthcare becomes subject to greater market mechanisms, and as patients, providers, and payers view each other with increasing suspicion. Healthcare professionals are just now coming to realize what other professionals have known for years: trust is earned, not assumed. The Trust Crisis represents the first comprehensive survey of the causes and consequences of declining trust in healthcare, and more importantly, it provides suggestions for restoring that trust. Editor David A. Shore, founder of the Harvard School of Public Health's Trust Initiative, brings together an unparalleled collection of healthcare leaders for this volume. Chapter authors include Donald Berwick, Robert Blendon, Lucian Leape, and George Lundberg. The book also features an introduction by Cokie and Steve Roberts. Causes, consequences, and cures for the crisis in trust are specifically addressed. Critical areas treated by the authors include: - systemic conditions that lead to medical errors, and remedies for promoting quality of care. - outdated modes of doctor-patient communication that hinder compliance. - novel modes of interaction to improve satisfaction. - patient-centered care and metrics to evaluate its presence or absence. - media communication and miscommunication, and new standards for medical reporting. - clinical insights applied to the use of human subjects in biomedical research. - recommendations for revising medical school curricula and strengthening the peer-review process in medical journals. - practical strategies for decreasing the lingering discord between patients, providers, and health plans. While presenting a diversity of topics and opinions, the authors of this volume agree upon a few principles. The trust famine will have dire consequences if it continues unchecked. Healthcare leaders can take measures to improve trust. Regaining trust requires that entire organizations pay closer attention to the "human factors" of healthcare. And perhaps most critical for change, trust-building is not only good medicine, but good business as well.
