Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Microbiology of Waterborne Diseases describes the diseases associated with water, their causative agents and the ways in which they gain access to water systems. The book is divided into sections covering bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Other sections detail methods for detecting and identifying waterborne microorganisms, and the ways in which they are removed from water, including chlorine, ozone, and ultraviolet disinfection. The second edition of this handbook has been updated with information on biofilms and antimicrobial resistance. The impact of global warming and climate change phenomena on waterborne illnesses are also discussed. This book serves as an indispensable reference for public health microbiologists, water utility scientists, research water pollution microbiologists environmental health officers, consultants in communicable disease control and microbial water pollution students. Focuses on the microorganisms of most significance to public health, including E. coli, cryptosporidium, and enterovirus Highlights the basic microbiology, clinical features, survival in the environment, and gives a risk assessment for each pathogen Contains new material on antimicrobial resistance and biofilms Covers drinking water and both marine and freshwater recreational bathing waters

Book Microbiology of Drinking Water

Download or read book Microbiology of Drinking Water written by Gabriel Bitton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbiology of Drinking Water Production and Distribution addresses the public health aspects of drinking water treatment and distribution. It explains the different water treatment processes, such as pretreatment, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and their impacts on waterborne microbial pathogens and parasites. Drinking water quality may be degraded in water distribution systems—microorganisms form biofilms within distribution systems that allow them to flourish. Various methodologies have been proposed to assess the bacterial growth potential in water distribution systems. Microbiology of Drinking Water Production and Distribution also places drinking water quality and public health issues in context; it addresses the effect of bioterrorism on drinking water safety, particularly safeguards that are in place to protect consumers against the microbial agents involved. In addition, the text delves into research on drinking water quality in developing countries and the low-cost treatment technologies that could save lives. The text also examines the microbiological water quality of bottled water, often misunderstood by the public at large.

Book Health Related Water Microbiology 2000

Download or read book Health Related Water Microbiology 2000 written by R. Morris and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality and quantity of papers given at successive Health-related Water Microbiology Symposia continues to increase and the millennium meeting in Paris saw the highest ever number of delegates and presentations. Of necessity, these selected proceedings can only give a taste of the overall content of the Symposium but nevertheless, reflect on the growing interest and awareness of the importance of the microbial contamination of our environment and the implications for human health. Numerous contributions address different aspects of one of the waterborne diseases of most concern, cryptosporidiosis. However, this did not preclude reports on outbreaks of other diseases. Several contributions raised important questions: how should epidemiological data be interpreted? and what methods are valid for regulatory monitoring? were of particular interest. Newly developed analytical methods have allowed a greater range of pathogens to be detected. However, such techniques have little significance if they cannot be used for the practical evaluation of water quality and part of this is the acquiring of monitoring data upon which future treatment and policy decisions can be made. The 43 papers selected here cover: standards and quality assurance; risk assessment; epidemiology and disease outbreaks; monitoring; microbial survival; disinfection; wastewater treatment; methodology; and microbial toxins.

Book Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology

Download or read book Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology written by Duncan Mara and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-08-07 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and therefore a basic human right" --Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General Edited by two world-renowned scientists in the field, The Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology provides a definitive and comprehensive coverage of water and wastewater microbiology. With contributions from experts from around the world, this book gives a global perspective on the important issues faced in the provision of safe drinking water, the problems of dealing with aquatic pollution and the processes involved in wastewater management. Starting with an introductory chapter of basic microbiological principles, The Handbook of Water and Wastewater Microbiology develops these principles further, ensuring that this is the essential text for process engineers with little microbiological experience and specialist microbiologists alike. Comprehensive selection of reviews dealing with drinking water and aquatic pollution Provides an understading of basic microbiology and how it is applied to engineering process solutions Suitable for all levels of knowledge in microbiology -from those with no background to specialists who require the depth of information

Book Drinking Water Microbiology

Download or read book Drinking Water Microbiology written by Gordon A. McFeters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microbiology of drinking water remains an important worldwide concern despite modem progress in science and engineering. Countries that are more technologically advanced have experienced a significant reduction in water borne morbidity within the last 100 years: This reduction has been achieved through the application of effective technologies for the treatment, disinfec tion, and distribution of potable water. However, morbidity resulting from the ingestion of contaminated water persists globally, and the available ep idemiological evidence (Waterborne Diseases in the United States, G. F. Craun, ed. , 1986, CRC Press) demonstrates a dramatic increase in the number of waterborne outbreaks and individual cases within the United States since the mid-1960s. In addition, it should also be noted that the incidence of water borne outbreaks of unknown etiology and those caused by "new" pathogens, such as Campylobaeter sp. , is also increasing in the United States. Although it might be debated whether these increases are real or an artifact resulting from more efficient reporting, it is clear that waterborne morbidity cannot be ignored in the industrialized world. More significantly, it represents one of the most important causes of illness within developing countries. Approxi mately one-half the world's population experiences diseases that are the direct consequence of drinking polluted water. Such illnesses are the primary cause of infant mortality in many Third World countries.
