Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Adults age 50 to 64 face rising out-of-pocket costs for health care and declining access to employer-sponsored health coverage. The latest analysis shows nearly one in three adults in this age group live in families that spent at least 10 percent of their after-tax income on health care, compared with 18 percent of adults age 19 to 49.

Book Health Insurance and Early Retirement

Download or read book Health Insurance and Early Retirement written by Jonathan Gruber and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the vast majority of working individuals aged 55-64 receive health insurance coverage through their employment, many of these individuals face the prospect of losing such coverage should they retire before becoming eligible for guaranteed public coverage through Medicare at age 65. Because the expected medical expenses of this group are large and uncertain, the availability of health insurance coverage after retirement could be a key factor in the retirement decision of older workers. We examine the effect of health insurance on retirement by looking at variation in state and federal 'continuation of coverage' mandates, laws which allow individuals to continue purchasing health insurance through a previous employer for a specified number of months after leaving the firm. By allowing individuals to maintain their employer-provided health insurance after retirement, these laws decrease the cost of early retirement for those who do not have other retiree health insurance available. Using data on 55-64 year old men from the Current Population Survey, we find that one year of continuation benefits increases the probability of being retired by 1 percentage point; this represents a 5.4 percent increase in the baseline probability of being retired for this group. We also find that continuation mandates increase the likelihood of being insured after retirement.

Download or read book Aging in Asia written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population of Asia is growing both larger and older. Demographically the most important continent on the world, Asia's population, currently estimated to be 4.2 billion, is expected to increase to about 5.9 billion by 2050. Rapid declines in fertility, together with rising life expectancy, are altering the age structure of the population so that in 2050, for the first time in history, there will be roughly as many people in Asia over the age of 65 as under the age of 15. It is against this backdrop that the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA) asked the National Research Council (NRC), through the Committee on Population, to undertake a project on advancing behavioral and social research on aging in Asia. Aging in Asia: Findings from New and Emerging Data Initiatives is a peer-reviewed collection of papers from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand that were presented at two conferences organized in conjunction with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Indonesian Academy of Sciences, and Science Council of Japan; the first conference was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, and the second conference was hosted by the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi. The papers in the volume highlight the contributions from new and emerging data initiatives in the region and cover subject areas such as economic growth, labor markets, and consumption; family roles and responsibilities; and labor markets and consumption.

Book Health Insurance Coverage of Individuals Ages 55 64 1994 2002

Download or read book Health Insurance Coverage of Individuals Ages 55 64 1994 2002 written by Paul Fronstin and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates from the March 2003 Current Population Survey reveal that children and adults ages 55-64 were the most likely age groups to have health insurance coverage in 2002. The likelihood of individuals ages 55-64 being uninsured (12.9 percent) in that year was no greater than it was in 1994. However, future retired adults in this age group may be more likely to be uninsured if employer cutbacks to retiree health benefits affect them and they have no other means of obtaining health insurance. The PDF for the above title, published in the March 2004 issue of EBRI Notes, also contains the fulltext of another March 2004 EBRI Notes article abstracted on SSRN: quot;National Health Spending Rose 9.3 Percent in 2002; Sixth Consecutive Year of Faster Growth.quot.

Book Health Insurance Coverage of Near Elderly Individuals Ages 55 64 2006

Download or read book Health Insurance Coverage of Near Elderly Individuals Ages 55 64 2006 written by Jessica P. Vistnes and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the vast majority of near elderly individuals are covered by private or public health insurance, those lacking coverage may be particularly vulnerable to the high health care costs associated with serious and chronic illnesses that emerge at older ages. Given the declines in the availability of retiree coverage and the use of medical underwriting in the individual health insurance market, it is important to study the insurance coverage of near elderly individuals. Using data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS-HC), this Statistical Brief examines the sources of health insurance coverage of near elderly adults including whether employment-related coverage is obtained through a current job or a retirement job. The near elderly population in this Statistical Brief consists of those individuals ages 55-64 who were in the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population in December 2006. Younger adults are included in this Statistical Brief for comparison purposes. All differences between estimates discussed in the text are statistically significant at the .05 level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughly 40 million Americans have no health insurance, private or public, and the number has grown steadily over the past 25 years. Who are these children, women, and men, and why do they lack coverage for essential health care services? How does the system of insurance coverage in the U.S. operate, and where does it fail? The first of six Institute of Medicine reports that will examine in detail the consequences of having a large uninsured population, Coverage Matters: Insurance and Health Care, explores the myths and realities of who is uninsured, identifies social, economic, and policy factors that contribute to the situation, and describes the likelihood faced by members of various population groups of being uninsured. It serves as a guide to a broad range of issues related to the lack of insurance coverage in America and provides background data of use to policy makers and health services researchers.
