Book Human Impact on Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book Human Impact on Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa written by Michael B.K. Darkoh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Based on a blend of knowledge and perspectives from a variety of disciplines this volume examines the human-environment interaction in Africa, with a focus on the economic, social and political processes that generate environmental change and problems in this region. Currently there are controversies over and challenges to such concepts and issues as environment-human relationships, ecological resilience, decertification, sustainable development, globalization and North-South dialogue. This book draws upon past and present research findings to discuss these issues. It features: an examination of the characteristics, processes and patterns of environmental crises; an analysis of the principal issues and challenges facing policy makers and implementers; and the promotion of awareness of theoretical, empirical and comparative research. The volume not only seeks to answer some of the old questions, but also open up new ones for further discussion.

Book Health Life Expectancy and Health Longevity Cost of Variable Environmental Health and Economic Development in Nigeria

Download or read book Health Life Expectancy and Health Longevity Cost of Variable Environmental Health and Economic Development in Nigeria written by Onyenekenwa Cyprian Eneh and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The study interrogated the health-life-expectancy and health-longevity cost of variable environmental health and economic development in Nigeria.Methodology: The secondary data sourced from the World Health Organisation, Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and World Bank were used. The Vector Auto Regression were used to estimate the effects of variable environmental health on human health life expectancy, longevity and economic development, growth and productivity after the data sets were tested for the presence of unit root using Augmented dickey-fuller analysis. The impact of variable environmental health on human health life expectancy and productivity cum well-being was investigated with Granger causality.Findings: Results showed that variable environmental health (carbon emission), human-health-life expectancy and longevity were non-stationary in levels but stationary in their first difference. There was no long-run association among the variables. There was a significant relationship among variable environmental health (EH) (carbon emission), variable economic development (ED) (annual percent growth rate of Nigeria's gross domestic product (GDP) at market prices), and human-health-life-expectancy and longevity. Finding showed that for VEH (carbon emission) impulse or variance, human health life expectancy and longevity is shocked and declines and for economic development, growth and productivity impulse, human health life expectancy and longevity is shocked and declines. To arrest degenerating health and well-being, the environment needs to be conserved, appreciated and harnessed sustainably and further ensure to the barest minimum that there is; no shortage of vital resources, no poverty, improved conditions to increase resilience in situations requiring endurance of harsh and inhospitable environments, no breakdown of economic, demographic, ecological, productivity, development, socio-cultural system and bad governance in developing countries. Environmental health policies need appropriate implementation and more of them need to be enacted.Funding: No FunderDeclaration of Interest: The authors declare no competing interest.

Download or read book Transnational Social Policies written by International Development Research Centre (Canada) and published by IDRC. This book was released on 1999 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationships between social policy and human development are the subject of much research and theorizing. The literature in this area, however, examines these issues strictly within national contexts. What influence will international agendas such as NAFTA, the World Summit for Social Development, and Habitat II have? Transnational Social Policies specifically addresses the worldwide trend for national policies on human and social development to be increasingly influenced by agendas that are international, or "transnational," in nature. In doing so, the book examines the underlying international developmental, ethical, economic, and political issues shaping national policies in health, education, and employment in the developing world. This book's focus on the "transnational" character of the social policy debate makes it a truly unique and original contribution to the literature. It will appeal to the academic community, worldwide, in international development, public policy and administration, and social work; policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in the field of public (social) policy; and the international community of individuals and organizations working in international social development.
