Download or read book For the Public s Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-05-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite having the costliest medical care delivery system in the world, Americans are not particularly healthy. Recent international comparisons show that life expectancy in the U.S. ranks 49th among all nations, and infant mortality rates are higher in the U.S. than in many far less affluent nations. While these statistics are alarming, the bigger problem is that we do not know how to reverse this trend. Our lack of knowledge is due in large part to significant inadequacies in the health system for gathering, analyzing, and communicating health information about the population. To inform the public health community and all other sectors that contribute to population health, For the Public's Health: The Role of Measurement in Action and Accountability reviews current approaches for measuring the health of individuals and communities and creates a roadmap for future development. This book, the first of three in a series, focuses on data and measurement-not as ends in themselves, but rather tools to inform the myriad programs, policies, and processes developed or undertaken by governmental public health agencies and their many partners in the health system. For the Public's Health seeks to reinstate the proper and evidence-based understanding of health as not merely the result of medical or clinical care but the result of the sum of what we do as a society to create the conditions in which people can be healthy. To achieve this goal, the book suggests changes in the processes, tools, and approaches used to gather information about health outcomes and their determinants. The book also recommends developing an integrated and coordinated system in which all parties-including governmental and private sector partners at all levels-have access to timely and meaningful data to help foster individual and community awareness and action.

Book Future Directions for the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports

Download or read book Future Directions for the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States devotes extensive resources to health care, evaluating how successfully the U.S. system delivers high-quality, high-value care in an equitable manner is essential. At the request of Congress, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) annually produces the National Healthcare Quality Report (NHQR) and the National Healthcare Disparities Report (NHDR). The reports have revealed areas in which health care performance has improved over time, but they also have identified major shortcomings. After five years of producing the NHQR and NHDR, AHRQ asked the IOM for guidance on how to improve the next generation of reports. The IOM concludes that the NHQR and NHDR can be improved in ways that would make them more influential in promoting change in the health care system. In addition to being sources of data on past trends, the national healthcare reports can provide more detailed insights into current performance, establish the value of closing gaps in quality and equity, and project the time required to bridge those gaps at the current pace of improvement.

Download or read book Health Care Reform written by Ashraf A Hilmy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Dr. Ashraf A. Hilmy, with a surgeons objective, no-nonsense precision and an unabashed lack of political correctness, dissects the current state of health-care delivery in America. In practice since 1979, he is board certified in surgery, anesthesiology, critical-care medicine, and health-care administration. He received an MBA from the University of Texas, Pan Am with an emphasis on health-care administration. He has served as both chief of surgery and staff at several institutions and has practiced in every scale of facilitysolo, partnership, and group practice. Dr. Hilmy is uniquely qualified to render an informed opinion about health care in the United States. In his professional judgment, there is no question that the current system is faltering and in need of radical reform. No other country in the world spends so much on health care and has so little to show for it. Written with the layperson in mind, Health-Care Reform offers insightful, well-researched, supported arguments. Though it does not set out to offend anyone, people will be offendedas a portion of the drivers of escalating health-care costs are laid squarely on their shoulders. Health-Care Reform addresses how health care is delivered in America. By comparing our delivery system to those used around the world, Dr. Hilmy breaks down different cost drivers with anonymous case examples, and finally, offers suggestions for realistic reform.
