Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who controls the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and what are the real goals of this powerful agency? These are the central questions explored in Health at Gunpoint, a book that brings into clear focus the silent war being waged by the FDA against American consumers. The FDA was established in 1906 to protect the U.S. public from misbranded and adulterated foods and drugs. While the original intent may have been honorable, over the years, the mission has become tainted by lobbyists and money. In Health at Gunpoint, award-winning health writer James Gormley presents a history of this Federal agency’s long-standing battle against health products and examines some of its most controversial decisions and the troubling reasons behind them. Now, the FDA is once again poised to make decisions that would have a major impact on the public’s health—this time, by imposing restrictions that would eventually eliminate many of the nutritional supplements Americans take every day. Health at Gunpoint not only sheds light on what is happening, but also prepares you for the coming battle.

Book Gun Violence Disability and Recovery

Download or read book Gun Violence Disability and Recovery written by Cate Buchanan, Editor and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gun violence intentional, self-directed or accidental is a profoundly traumatic experience. From physical injuries to unseen psychological scars and permanent impairments, it irrevocably changes people's lives. Gun violence does not just the individual shot or threatened. Secondary victimisation also includes relatives, friends, colleagues, caregivers, and, perhaps controversially, perpetrators themselves. Gun Violence, Disability and Recovery provides the first overview of the rights and needs of survivors of gun violence. The collection contains contributions from gun violence survivors, trauma surgeons, disability rights activists, rehabilitation specialists, violence prevention and reduction experts, development practitioners, and gender justice advocates. From countries with low resource levels to those already equipped with state-of-the-art rehabilitation centres, this innovative publication provides policymakers, practitioners, government officials, and donors with timely analysis on what could be done differently to meet the needs and rights of survivors of gun violence. "This volume speaks to me both as a government official and as a survivor of gun violence. I know first-hand how painful the aftermath of such a life-changing event can be. But I also know it is possible to recover and make a positive difference in society. I hope this book will inspire other survivors to follow this path." Lenín Moreno Garcés, Vice President, Ecuador "Little attention has been paid to the fact that for every person killed by gun violence, as many as six victims will survive, often with severe disabilities. The long-term physical and psychological damage, social and economic impacts, can no longer be overlooked. Bringing together voices of survivors, as well as health, medical, rehabilitation and legal concerns, this book represents a significant step forward, outlining key issues for policy, practice and intervention. It is a must read for anyone concerned about human rights and violence and that should mean all of us." Nora Ellen Groce, Director, Leonard Cheshire Disability & Inclusive Development Centre, University College London, UK "Every year, hundreds of thousands of victims of gun violence, together with their families, experience the real costs of the availability and misuse of arms in our communities. For these victims to attain their basic human rights, so often denied them, we need a better understanding of their predicament, challenges and needs. Gun Violence, Disability and Recovery, with its comprehensive overview and analysis, will critically inform our efforts to develop and implement better policies and practices to enhance the realisation of the rights of survivors of armed violence, including implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty." Espen Barth Eide, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Norway "The reality of survivors of gun violence my reality is so often lost in narrow political and economic interests. This volume gives me hope that attention to life after gun violence will begin to receive long overdue attention, and contribute to the long haul effort of improving services for survivors as well as working towards accountability about the arms trade." Shelley Barry, filmmaker, South Africa "International development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, will not be achieved if the rights of people with disabilities are not met. Through a broad range of case studies and examples from low and middle income countries, this book shows us how States could do better. Let us hope that its message is heard. As a survivor of gun violence myself, I take a keen interest in any effort to effect gun control, particularly across Africa. This is the

Download or read book At Gunpoint written by Dr Rahn Kennedy Bailey and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firearms violence is as American as apple pie in a country where the right to bear arms is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Yet, our forefathers could not have imagined armor-piercing bullets, automatic assault rifles in the hands of criminals and suspects using such weapons to kill concert attendees, church-goers and school children. Dr. Rahn Bailey and his coauthors take a hard look at firearm violence from the seat of a medical professional, the issues behind such violence and, finally, how the medical community should be responding to such issues. There is a notion by some, pushed by the National Rifle Association that the only way to stop a "bad guy with a gun is a gun is a good guy with a gun." Dr. Bailey and his colleagues take on that notion head on. His has seen firearm violence up close as a physician and what it does to the victim and everyone around him or her. As an African-American psychiatrist, Dr. Bailey has something to say on the subject that is authoritative, noteworthy and one many should hear. There is a prevailing feeling among some that bringing more guns into a situation will actually make an area or situation safer. That simply is not true. Dr. Bailey's book will examine the impact of suicide and guns, active shooters, how guns are used interpersonally. Many are dying needlessly simply because guns have been introduced into a situation. That does not mean fist fights do not lead to deaths, or conflicts with knives, bats, rocks, etc. will leave people dead. When someone can take a weapons that can fire off hundreds of rounds of ammunition in minutes - even seconds - victims have little chance to survive much less fight back. Gun violence is a health care issue and must be acknowledged as such, researched and treated in such a manner. Dr. Bailey and his colleagues will make that case in the following pages.

Download or read book War and Health written by Catherine Lutz and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a detailed look at how war affects human life and health far beyond the battlefield Since 2010, a team of activists, social scientists, and physicians have monitored the lives lost as a result of the US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan through an initiative called the Costs of War Project. Unlike most studies of war casualties, this research looks beyond lives lost in violence to consider those who have died as a result of illness, injuries, and malnutrition that would not have occurred had the war not taken place. Incredibly, the Cost of War Project has found that, of the more than 1,000,000 lives lost in the recent US wars, a minimum of 800,000 died not from violence, but from indirect causes. War and Health offers a critical examination of these indirect casualties, examining health outcomes on the battlefield and elsewhere—in hospitals, homes, and refugee camps—both during combat and in the years following, as communities struggle to live normal lives despite decimated social services, lack of access to medical care, ongoing illness and disability, malnutrition, loss of infrastructure, and increased substance abuse. The volume considers the effect of the war on both civilians and on US service members, in war zones—where healthcare systems have been destroyed by long-term conflict—and in the United States, where healthcare is highly developed. Ultimately, it draws much-needed attention to the far-reaching health consequences of the recent US wars, and argues that we cannot go to war—and remain at war—without understanding the catastrophic effect war has on the entire ecosystem of human health.

Book Personal Safety for Health Care Workers

Download or read book Personal Safety for Health Care Workers written by Pauline Bibby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at employers, managers and professional and administrative staff in the health care services. GP practices, home visits and the hospital are all covered. Despite growing evidence of violence against health care workers, some employers have been slow to acknowledge the risks faced in both primary and secondary health care settings. Personal Safety for Health Care Workers provides the tools to investigate the risks involved and to develop policy and practice to ensure staff safety. It also deals with the vexed question of under-reporting. Part I deals with the respective roles and responsibilities of employers and employees and offers guidance on developing a workplace personal safety policy. Workplace design and management are addressed and guidelines provided for health care workers when away from their normal work base. Part 2 gives detailed guidelines for use by individual workers in a variety of work situations. Part 3 considers training issues and contains a number of sample training programmes with handouts. The message of this book is that prevention is better than cure - proper attention to risk can reduce both the incidence of aggression and its development into violent acts. The aim is to achieve the dual effect of protecting health care workers, and also of providing services in a more sensitive way. Good practice implies a responsibility to ensure that health care can be delivered in conditions of safety for staff and patients alike.
